The New York JleraUl illustrates by dia grams 8)me interesting features of the population of tbla country ah auggrated by the census returns. A circle fourteen inches in circumference is divided to show tiie relative proportions of the foreigu born and thu native population, also the eompar ative population of the several States and 3er Holies. iiy the census of 1880 ,tho population el the United .States woe 50,155,763, 43,475,840 being natives and 0,07U,U43 of foreign birth. Of the fourteen inches of circumference lts8 than two represent the entire foreign born population, the remainder, more than twelve inches, representing the native The whole foreign population is aboul iquul io the whole number of people living in Now York, which has the largest foreign element, and North Carolina, which hut thu fciuullefit. The German born populu tiou equals the combined population of Cal' ifornia, Colorado, Delaware, Flor ida, Kamaa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon and Khode Island; and the Irish born is about the same. The Chinese of the country and the population of Nebraska will just about balance; so with the English and Welsh and immi grants from British America and the popu lation of Missouri. F.'orida equals the settlers from Norway and Sweden, and little Delaware the French. If maled and females were separated? which we think unnecessary and which certainly would be treating the ladies shabbily?the men would require a little more room than the women, because there are 871,000 more of them. In this country there is ne'er a Jill without a Jack, but what is going to be done for the excess oi Jacks? It is plain that some of them art doomed. The colored people are about an eighth of the population. In Aliseifisippi the blacks outnumber the whites by 171,000; in Louisiana by 30,000 and in South Caro lina by L'05,000; though in each of these States the white Democrats are in political cuntrol. 1'nbllenlloun. Mr Giles li. Stebbins, of Detroit, sends ?8 bis American Protectionist's Manual a neat little book of 192 pages bound in clotb The work deals with the tariff ques tion in its present phase and is very useful as ? hand book of ready reference. Mr. Stebbins will mail the Manual on receipt ol 75 cents. The September number of the Popular Sdmct J/ml/W7.containsa wide mage ol top ics. AMh American ltericw writers tfiscua, in the September number, somo of the live questions of the day. Judge Cooley, of Michigan, tlie noted law writer, has a paper on "Suite liegulation ol Corporato Profile, Congressman Kusson, of Iowa, writes on "Municipal Keform;" under the head of "Shooting at Sight," Chief J usiice Jackson, of Georgia, discusses a phase of Southern life which has recently passed under sharp review. Other good papers complete the number. The Atlantic Monthly (September) is fail of good reading of varied character, "from grave to gay, from lively to severe. Dr. Holmes contributes "Kings Chapel, patriotic poem, which has come to stay. There are one or two pleasant sketches, politics ii not neglected, Mr. Henry James goes on with "En Province," and there are the usual excellent literary criticisms. "Artistic Homes in City and Country" is the title ol a very handsome and liberally illustrated volume by A. W. Fuller, of the Arm ofFuller & Wheeler, architects, of Al bany. Plans are given not only with a view t? theartiBtic effect but also with re gard to the drainage and plumbing. Mr. Fuller's work shows us not only what may he done in a new bouse, but how the old may be made new in harmony with mod ern style. Itisa valuable contribution to the popular literature of architecture. Messrs James K. Osgood & Co. are the pub liBhers. The American Agriculturalist, always good, is above high-water mark in the Septem ber number. The illustrations ol this ex cellent publication aro of particular value. bheakpast bujqbty " Ali^lstve fairly captured Trouvilie aud carrial oil all the social hon ors at the French seaside. His raid wis as complete a failure as his powder-boat attack on Fort Fisher." The Knoxvllle,(Tenn.) Chronicle expresses the opinion that if the thinking Republi cans of Tennessee do their duty that Stat? will cast her vote for the next Republican nominee for the Presidency. In support ing itsopinion The Chronicle submits ji table of statistics showing that the- Republican voto has increased 37,000 in eight years, while thn Democratic vote has Increased only 17,000 during the same period. A well-posted Treasury official gives it as his opinion that there are at least 15,000,000 trade dollars in ihe New York banks and depositories, and that before Congress meets the amount will be increased to 1H),000,000. lie says that the syndicate of speculators who have taken hold of the Inula dollar will move on Congress with a p ?v e ful lobby n- q' winter, and that there ji< $2,000,000 or $3,6j0,00U in lue job if they can iuduce the Government to legitimatize t'ie coins. The Sistersville Independent has ordered a new press and will come out in a new form. Congratulations are extended. Tho Kanawha Gat-tte blandly remarks: "It is paid there ia a atill-hunt progressing for Rome of the State officers to be selected , next summer." The Wetzel Meuengtr insists that the best 1 thing the Republican party can do in ' 1884 will be to nominate Senator Ben Har i rison for the Presidency. , The war is over. Morris, of the Kitchie Gazelle and Miller, of the Grafton Eagle, after calling each other innumerable vile 1 names have met, kissed and fallen in love . with each other. [ The Nicholas Chronicle has entered on i ils fourth year and tho Piedmont Observer on its third. Both are good pai>ers, and have the Jntblliuknckk'h best wishes for ' their futuru success. The Noble county, 0., Republican thinks ? the nomination of lion. J. N. Camden, of the Standard Oil Company, for the Presi i dency would iysure a greasy campaign with the Standard's surplus wealth. ' The Richmond. Radiator, of Jefferson i county, Ohio, has entered upon its second i year, and its past speaks much for its future . success which is most decidedly merits. Its editor is alive and enterprising gentle man. 1 The Tuscarawas Advccaie calls it a 1 heathenish practice for a man to go around beatings base drum at 4 a. m. to awaken , people to go on an excursion. The Adco cute man was one of those who didn't take 1 the excursion in. 1 The Stoubenvillo Ohio Pros has entered > on its fifth volume. Under the careful man i agement of that veteran Republican, W. R. Allison, with each succeeding year it be comes more fixed as a necessity. Its news 1 columns are always bright ^ The Braxton Democrat wants a man for > Governor who will not part his name in the middle, and therefore objects to E. Boyd , Faulkner or E. Willis Wilson. The Deino ciat should describe to the "unwashed" the 1 style of a man it does want. The Washington (Pa.) Observer is plead* ing for a little observance of the Sabbath i day by railroad corporations. Since the opening of tho H 'inpfield long trains have rumbled through that classic town every day, and this the Observer thinks is not a very encouraging sign as long as they run on Sunday. The Barbour Jeffersonian says "show us a better representation in Congress from any State in the Union of its size, than this from West Virginia," and then gives the names of Camden, Kenna, Goff, Wilson and Snyder. The Jrjfenonian is Bourbon but evidently doesn't want to class that fire-eater, "clar do galleries" Eustace Gib son with the gentlemen named. The Huntington Advertiser Has presented the name of Attorney General Watts for Governor. The West Virginia Transcript , thereupon remarks of Watts, whom it styles the "most puissant and modest Walts" that "He is just the man. With hia high stovepipe hut, chuck full of "ways , that are dark and tricks that are vain," , and carrying with him tho aura of the faultless and honorable Board of Public Works, we say Watts, and Watts all the time." The Randolph Enterprise is happy, and gives its reasons for feeling so as followp; "The law prohibiting the killing of deer will soon be out, you can soon send a letter i to California for two cents, the crops are botter than they have been for yearB, we; have no Mahones in West Virginia and the1 rattle-snakes will soon seek their denB. A j people that can't be happy under these cir-' cumstances ought to Ue compelled to emi grate to Eastern Virginia." 1 Ditch t Jouk-nnliNtii Fh^m. Wheeling A'eut Letter. On Friday last our esteemed contempo raiy, the Wheeling Iktklligknciui, enter ed upon tfie thirty-second year of its exis tence. This is a good old age for a news paper in these days of ephemeral publica tions, and shows that the Inteluohkckb is one of the fixed institutions of the State. It has lived a long life of usefulness and has to-day a reputation for honesty and re liability of statement that few papers pos sets. The success of the Intkllioknceb is an illustration of the fact that decont jour nalism will pay as well as the flash and sensational kind. We congratulate our neighbors upon their auniversary and ex tend our beat wishes for continued succiss. Tnru llio KmmpiiIn out! I Veil Virginia (Wirt Oi.) Traiucript. In West Virginia we wish to see a fair fight, in which all who are legally entitled, may participate. We desire to see rings smashed up, that dishonesty and corrup-1 tion may not hopelessly degrade and de moralize the people. We have been too long in bondage, beggarly plebeians un worthy of notice, unless when viler beg gars want our votes to elect them into oillce. A fair, full, free vote we hope to see given, whatever parly may win or lose. Tonic Trcntmeut of the (JnlverMlly. Tyler County Star. The recent criticisms on tho mismanage ment of the institution will have a good ef fect. There will be less Bourbonism than for years past. Nothing does those in pow er so much good as to know that the pub lic aro watching them, so nothing could so effectually put the Board of Regents and the Faculty upon their good behavior as the recent drubbing they have received at I the haude of tho Republican press of the1 State. No NelflMli Moheme, Uraxton Central. The proposed conference suggested by the Intjclmqknckk, of the "rank and file" of the anti-Bourbon voters of the State, has been pretty thoroughly discussed through the pross. Now, as the Republi can State Executive Committee is asked for an expression on this subject by the editor of that paper, we hope they will speak out We cannot think the proposed conference means the consummation of anyselflah scheme. InvMilffnU the liiNiine Anylnm. WdUburg Herald. The INTXLUOENCKR. has lately been dis cussing certain alleged abuses at that insti tution and if that is the way the discussion is to be conducted by the party of the other part, the irresistable conclusion will be that the authorities there really need investiga tion.
