Some of the doctors tried bleeding, and various other remedies were tried, but all in vain, for the deep-rooted disease still stuck fast, At last, 1 procured a box of your val uable Liver Pills from a druggist here, and found, after taking a portion of them, that the disease and painful sensation over the eyes have almost entirely left me. 1 will close by advising all those afflicted as I have been, to procure the valuable medicine ut once and save much time and pain, with little expense With sincere gratitude and respect, I remain, yours respectfully, _ Gao. We see it stated that a representative of several extensive sheep raisers in Aus tralia is buying sheep in New York, Ohio and Vermont /or export to that country, and that Mr. Garland, one of the members of the Tariff Commission, has gone there to arrange for shipments thither from the U.ited States. Ono object, doubtless, in such a movement is to improve the Austra lian merino, though it is apparently some thing like carrying coal to Newcastle. In view of a possible depletion of our fins wool-bearing sheep whicti such a movement suggests, and its ultimate effect upon our economic poliey regardiug the sheep and wool industry of this country, it may be worth while to inquire their con dition and progress in the light of census revelations. Grouping the returns ot ihe number of sheep in the United S ates and the population since 1860 into the usual sectional divisions, we get the following comparative results: NUKIIKK OK SHEEP. lhOO. 1870 1880. The conclusions from these figures relating to eleven of the older States are inevitable, and they uhow that as population increaacs and lands become more valuable, sheep raising rapidly declines. In the figures for the Western Slates, although tlie group contains some States that are comparative ly new, which consequently form as yet an exception, the same general tendency is conspicuous. There was an increase in the first decade, as in all newer States, but in the second decade the decline begins to ebow itself, amounting in tbat period to near ten per cent. But in sjme of these States the decline in the latter ten years has been enormous, being as much as thirty-three per cent in Irinoia aud Indi ana and forty-five per cent in lowu, as the following details will show: NiaHltft Of MIKES'. I860 1870. 1880. Cali fornia is said to have already practically reached its limits in this respect, and there can be little doubt the limit of sheep rais ing in the United States will also have been practically reached. In regard to the Southern States, which show an increase in the last decade, it is natural that on the same general princi pals as illustrated in the case of the newer S.ates, there should be some increase in that section by way of recovering lost ground during tne civil war, and also be cause the South is endeavoring to do more mixed farming than heretofore aud to de vote itself less exclusively to the raising of cotton. The ratio of the production of sheep to that of w ool cannot be ascertained with any approximation to certainty. The earlier statistics of wool were very inade quate, and there is a large element of guess ing even now,-but there is undoubtedly a tendency Uwards an increase of weight of the fleece per sheep, and this of course has Bomeinlluence in retarding the increase of the woo! production of the older States. The statistics of sheep and wool products are thus exhibited in the omens returns for the whole country: Number of Lbi per abejp Lbi. wool, lleeco* 18y) .31,723,KM 62,#: 6, 959 2.42 1N30 22,401,275 ft?,2W,7U 2 61 1870 28,477,V >1 10.-,162,387 ?.59 1680 S3.iyi.tM 165,68*493 4.40 This increase in the fleece is too large not to be some evidence in itself of a taller report In late censuses of the wool pro duction than in tlie earlier; while on the other baud, tho statistics of sheep were, from the nature of the case, more easily obtained. llaalneNH la tinilueaa. Slinll We Ktlic Mmnlsli or Naxonyf WIjhI DouarMietpHenMii;? ; To the Editor oj tht InleiKgenctr. Hir Having read "an editor's opinion on wool," aloo the farmer's opinion of wool, in your issue of the 34th inst, we will now give)ou the opinion of one who is neither on editor nor u furui. Your Valley Grove correspondent dwells con siderably upon the liue qualities of the Spanish wool as now raised oy most wool growers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio, lie iairly admiia tliat fartneis in general do not give tho exact facts in regard to the class of wool they grow, v^hen tne wool-buyer comes around. Knowing as they well do that Saxony wool in goou condition will bring from 8 to 10 cents per uound more than ihe high-bred Spanish. In fact the scoured pound of Hue Saxony will bring 30 cents per pound more than j the general ruu of Spanish clips, when cleansed for the cards. Your corre?pon dent must be in the line of raising this Spanish stock ns your editorial appears to have stirred hiin up to tho dt feme of grow ing this heavy gam-stuck wool. This n tho class of wool that is now mostly raised. This gum and grease is what makes tlr; big heavy fleeces; this gam will not wash out on tne sheep's back and the more of this in the fleece the better for the lariner, when he can sell to some buyer that does not know the difference between the two classes of wool. That high-bred Spanish wools are pretty well gum-stuck, no one need deny?it is a self-evident fact. We will name one case. The Hon. Sam uel Juwett, of Independence, Mo, who, by the way, has from 400 to 500 Spanish sheep, imd a celebrated ram valued at $1,500, which was them in the spring of 1681. The unwashed fleece weigiied 27j* pounds. It was then Bcoured out by a manufacturer, innde ready for the cards, and then weighed only Oj pounds, a loss of 21 pounds or nearly 70 per ceut of the ungcoured weight. Now, was this gurn | stuck or not? This wool was then valued | at 70 cents the scourtd pound or $172, I the value of the cleaned fleece. now IHKH u u(Hi-uuaa uut* 01 oaxviiy blood. Well-bred he will shear abuut 12 pounds of nice, Hoe, white wool, not yel low gum. In cleaning for the cards this will lose about CO per cent, leaving4 4-5 pounds of nice wool, worth about $1 (JO per pound, or $4 80 for the scoured fleece. The value of the 27i pounds unwashed would not be more than froui 15 to IS cents per pound, and'if a buyer would offer lets thau 25 or 20 cents he would get himself insulted because he did not want to buy 21 pounds of gum or yellow grease. We have examined thorough bred and grade Spaniel) sheep, and we have the 11 rat one to see tnat has no gum in the wool. All have it more or lest), and it is of such a character, that no one can tell what will bo the Iocs in such wool by handlinythem. We are confident that these wools are often bought at such price that the scoured pound is not worth to the manufacturers by two or three cents what the gum pound cost him. The general grade of wool grown in this section is far below that grown here twenty y care ego. Will your correspondent please inform us, why two agents left Bos ton last week for Australia. Was it to buy gum stuuk wool, or was it tcfEoy a class of tine wool such as could not be got here? let him auswer. In conclusion we will say that such wool as is used in the manufacture of fine all wool castimeres is not grown in such quan tity iu the United Siates us should be. We have seen flocks of Saxony sheep, of o00, with good constitution, white wool, no foot ror, in every respect, we believe, super ior to the same number of Spanish sheep to be found anywhere to-day. At the Layfayelte Excursion House this afternoon while tt-ousandsof families were enjoying the bycicle tournament and Japan ese II reworks, there were two young men. or rather boys, among the throng who had forsaken luxuriant homes, influenced by a strange spirit of adventure. Wearing the white apron and short coat of waiteis and serving beer to the thirsty Jerseymeu, were Harry Gwinn aud Hamilton Crankshaw, both sons of wealthy and highly esteemed families in Atlanta, Gd. There was, indeed, something in the ap pearance of the boys that indicated that they were more or lees out of their clement. We have been through all the principal cities in the South, some times living like princes, and otner times waiting in saloons." Harry Gwinn is 6aid to be the son of a wealthy clergyman. IkcmnuU for Fnriu Implement*. In a late address, J. S. Grinuell, who has made an extensive inquiry, suited that iu 18S2 80,000grain drills were sold; horse hoes and cultivators, 320,000; 180,000 mow ing and reaping machines; 10,000 twine binders; 1UO.COO horse rakes, and about 10,000 nay-loaders and 10,000 threshing machines. Of plows, no man knows the number, but at least 20,000 sulky-plows were sold, aud of dairy upparatus no esti mate, even, could be made. This is a pretty fair advance since 1811, when the first Ames shovel was made. In 1819 the first cast iron plow made its appearance, aud in 1S23 Ilusaey made the first working reaper, in those days the valuo of farm products was governed by supply and de mand, but with the advent of machinery the price is now governed Dy ''call-board famine," whose transactions aggregate five times the actuul production of the country.
