Maryland, Massachusetts, Minne sota and New Jersey will vote (or Governor, other State officers and legislature. Mis sissippi will choose a Legislature; Nebraska a Justice of the Supreme Court and He gents of the State University; New York and Pennsylvania State officers (no Gov ernor) and Legislature. The general in terest, of course, turnB to Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. Republicans and Setter Element Demo crats express confidence in the defeat of Butler, whose chances do not seem to im prove as the campaign progresses. But Butler is making a great effort to hold on, and he has enough infatuated followers to poll a large vote. His defeat seems proba ble, but the result of the Massachusetts campaign is Involved in too much doubt to justify prediction. By all the signs the Republicans should carry Pennsylvania. It is a Republican State, and this year the Republicans are not trying to elect two ltepublican tickets. Those who were in the Independent lte publican movement last year express them selves satisfied with this year's ticket. The combined Republican vete of last year ex ceeded the Camocratic vote for Governor by more than three thousand. Garfield carried Pennsylvania, Hancock's own! State, by 37,000. There are enough Repub licans In Pennsylvania to carry the State to-morrow by a handsome majority, but there has been an apathy wbicb does not mean a large majority, A committee esti mate places the majority at 8,000. The Democrats also claim it, butthoprobability il against them. Last year Cleveland carried New York by 102,000 plurality. Garfield had a plu rality of 2i,(JOO. The stay-at-home Repub licans gave Cloveland his handsome ex cess. Republicans ate claiming the State tills year, but the iNTSLLiautcxR will not bs greatly surprised to see them defeated, in spite of tho trouble in the Democratic oimp. New York is a doubtful State, and the Republicans can not carry it withont united forces and a great deal of bard work. Looking on frcut this distance the forces do not appear to be in the best con dition. We Bball be glad if the returns show this viow to be erroneous. Later From Morcnnlowv. Recently we asked our friends of the Morgontown press "whether there are as many eludenta In attendance [at the Uni versity] aa there were this time last year." The J'otl replies that there are not bo many by twenty-five. Now comes our other friend the Xtw Dominion, desirous of giving the Ixmuom'Kii an italic posting in this connection. We further answer the IftTiLuoisctn's question ts to "wLbther there are aa many students in attendance aa there were thia time last year," in tba negative. Toe reaa m a-. slgneu for the redaction in tne number of students ia Uia assault made upon Cii e insti tution by tbe IsianuasnciB and other Ite pubiicau papers during tne tait summer. Now we have fully aud frankly responded to the inquiries of tne I?t?luo?kcer; will It in turn fully and frankly answer a question or two: Why does the iKTiwoiscBRask about the number of atudeuta? Why doea It ask specially whether the number la aa large aa ai this time last year? What inter, at, fjraooth, haa thei.vrsi.u okkceu in this matter Was the otjectof the iKTituoiacaa'a as aault upon Ike llnlversliy, to reduce the number of students, aoduoealtnow dcs're to ascertain the result of Its shot, that It may glory over it Just a little? How about this? This about it The iNmuoKKCZtt asks because it wishes to know and to inform its readers. The Istku.iok.vcbb asks spec ially bccauao it desires to know whether there are more students now than there were at this time last year. An Increasing number of students would have shown one thing; a decreasing number shows anoth er. Tbe Interest of the Ixtklltgbxkkb in thia matter is the interest which every news paper in the Slate should feel in a public institution. The object of the Iktkujokk out in its "assault upon the University," was to bring to the public notice some phases of the management which were not conducive to the welfare of the Institution ?some things which ought not to be in an institution supported by the Veople. The Intkllio kkckh does not glory overthe failure of the University to come np to the measure of its epportuniUes. It is cause for shame, not glory, that the chief institution cf learning in the State should have been conducted as the Uni versity has been conducted, with slight re gard for the public interests and the pub lic rights. Now will our Morgsntown friends ac cept thanks for their kindness and place tbe Iktkli.iok.vckb under further obliga tions by Baying how many students are now in tbe Preparatory Department, and how the numbor compares with the roll of that department at this time last year? PERSONAL. The Rev. R. Hodgson, on English Vicar who has taken to the lecture field, recon ciles science and religion by arguing that pre-Adamite remains are nothing more nor lees than fossil angels. Charles Gounod, the composer of "Faust," is also a poet in his leisure hours, and an admirable reader of verse. In his revised work, "Sapho," he has the advan tage of the association of Emile Augier. It is said that the Comte de Paris lately entered into negotiations with a Berlin journalist with the view of securing his services as "German" secretary. He made an intimate acquaintance with the German press a prerequisite for the position, and German papsrs do not fail to draw there from significant political conclusions. Hannibal Hamlin is not ths only distin guished personage who has made a practice through life of never wearing an overcoat. The late Canon Bladon, whose near approach to centenarlanismwill be remem bered, attributed his long years and good bealth to the same eccentricity. Mr. Browniag has left his mountain home In the Val d'Aoeta. and has made his way to Venice, where he will slay for some weeks. He haa been walking live or six hours a day with his sister, and is described by a friend who has seen him as ruddy-cheeked and in vigorous health. He has also been busy with his pen. jr. Armory Knox, the editor of Tutu Si( I in at, on being asked whether he wonld lecture, replied: "Lecture? Am I ever going to lecture? Once upon a Urns 1 was a sewing machine agent, and from that I have come, down to newspaper work, but may the good Lord cut me off if it will be pleating to him before 1 ever get down as far as toe lecture platform." Prince Biamarck'fl antipathy to appear in Siblic is becoming more and more marked, e no longer walta about in the Thjer gartin, and when he goes to see the Kaiser be always rides in a cloeed carriage. He is, in f*ct, making himself so scarce that taenty marks are often paid for a ticket of admission to the Eeicheratb, when it is re ported that the Iron Chancellor is present BREAKFAST BU OGET. Iapacio Garcia Vey van, a rich resident of Tlacolepec. Mexico, was selzsd by a party of bandits on October 3, and carried off. They demand $10,000 for hia ransom. St Lonis poker players have resolved themselves into "cluns lor cultivating social and internal relations," so as to evade tho terms of the recent decision against the game. In Alaska everything freezes solid by tbe middle of October, and remains so until Spring. June. July and August are the only months that are even as warm as our coldest Winter days. Gtutavus V. Fox, who died at Lowell, Mass., on Monday last, commanded tbe vessel which went to the relief of Major Anderson and his little band at Fort Sum ter, and brought them away. Moet people in this world will be sur prised to learn of such a thing as a hump backed hen; nevertheless, John Dobson testified to the identity of two henB which had been stolen from him by the fact that they were humpbacked, "and one of them spread its legs out like a circle when it walked." The justice awarded him the hens. Two cats in the Boston cAt show are named respectively George I). Robinson and Benjamin F. Butler, and voting com menced Saturday to determino which should bo awarded the pri? for popular ity. The result will bo announced to morrow night in all the theatres, hotels and other public places in Boston. Late Saturday night "Butler" was leading. General Lifayette'areraains lio neglected and almost forgotten in the old Piepui Cemetery, on the outskirts of Paris. Very few tourists ever ask to ba shown there, and when thoy do make the request refuse to go ou being told that they would be compelled to drive through narrow, crook ed streets, entirely deserted save lor tbe few solemn and gloomy looking convents which line the way. People in Calcutta, India, have been noticing some curious phenomena in the appearance of the sky. On Sunday, Sep tember Gtb, two shocks of earthquake were followed by a lurid red light in the sky which lasted for four hours or more, and for four days afterward changes were no ticed iu the color of the sin. One morn ing it appears unusually white, another green, then blue, and at laet accounts it had changed to a blueish green.
