Many farmers who raise grapes are <
troubled abcut finding suitable supports
for the vines. Common stskis answer a
poor purpose. They am liable to blow over
when there aro high winds, and tho vines
are full of foliage or fruit. They aro also 1
likely to rot off. It is quite troublesome to
fasten the vines Jo me stakes in such a
manner that the clusters of grapes wiil be
exposed to tho eun no as to insure ripening
The roots of vines are ii jured when new i
stakes are set, 'Trellises mado of Bints of
wocd are objectionable in many respects.
Tho mofet economical grape trellis is made
of Bawn cedar ^ posts and telegraph
wire. The posts should be set about a rod .
apart, which will allow two vines to prow
betwetn them. The en/I pes's should be
set deeply and be braced on the in&ido so
as to witbetand the strain of the wires in
stretching them and tho weight of the ,
vines wuen they are loaded with geapes.
Largo staples should bo employed for securing
tho wires lo the posts. Two wire?,
one phced three and the other live feet
from the gromid, will generally be fouod I

however, me three wire?, placed respec- i

What is regarded by tho western prcee j
ae a very painful incident baa just occurred
?or ia alli ged to have occurred?in Fremont,
Ohio. It is asserted that tho Mayor
of Fremont, a town known throughout the |
world aa the homo of that good man, Mr.
Rutherford B. Hayes, was recently found ,
in the public etreetB somewhat intoxicated,
and was thereupon sternly rebuked by Mr.
Hayes. It need not be supposed from th^
tact that Mr. Hayes was, displeased with ,
tho Mayor's conduct that the latter had >
become intoxicated at Mr. IIayes' expeuee. i
That good inou meat assuredly never gave
h drop of intoxicating beverfge, or money
with which to purchase audi beverage, to
any human being. Keveubelesp, we need 1
not suppose Mr. HayeB was augry without
a causo. He is a tax-payer, ana kh such
contributes to the payment of the Mayor's
salary. If the Mayor spends any of this
buying intoxicating drinks, he may be
juatly said to buy them with money de
rived, in part, from Mr, Hayes' pockef.
Hence it can be understood why the good
man was indignant with the alleged intoxicated
Mayor, and why he Bternly rebaked
him.

The central figure in the Canadian Parliament
is als) the greatest figure in Canada.
He is Sir John A. Macdonald, the
real ruler of Canada, with but a short in*
terruption, for twenty-live years, and the
greateflt man Britibh North America has
produced. Other politicians are there, n
dczin of them, who have been knighted
by the Queen, but while ho is, like them,
Knight Commander of tbo Provincial Order
of St. Michael and St. George, t?o is
moro than that. He is Knight Commander
of the Biith, am*, more than that, he is a
member of ihe Imperial Privy Council,
which is a distinction enjoyed by no oilier
man in Canada. The otbera are Honorable;
he alone is ll'gbt Honorable, like
William E G'adetone. Sir Juhn is 70
yeara old, and hag been a legislator for
forty years.

that theeo trem, when necessary to bring
them Into sbap?, may bo pruned llkoany
others. Tho pruning oi ovcrpreenH has
sometimes bceu greatly nbuasd by cutting
off tho loner limbs and presenting u mouatroaity
whlcli eoraS ono Iikb compared to
"a hay cock upon i stump." The natural
form, when an evergreen ha* room to clvelop,
in that oi a cone, with i!? lower
branchea ruling npon tho ground and
forming n beautiful pyramid oi green. Instead
of cutting away tho lower branches, i
the better way would bo to apply tlio axo
to the trunk, and bo done with it altogether.
lCvergreonB ao generally take a i
perfectly conical shapo that pruning la
only needed to preserve that form; when a
branch growa with unueual vigor and
tiireatenB to destroy the symmetrical shape,
it fihonld bo cut back. To avoid all appearnnca
oi mutilation, make the cut npon the 1
under aide of tho blanch, and eloping to- ,

may bo controlled with very liltlo culling,
by a proper pinching out of the buda whlcli
by prolonging would form brauchea. In :
short, tho pruning of evergreeua prteenla
very little difference in treatment irom :
that required by a deciduous, fruit, or an ,

Is jour I,i(b Worth u Dollar'.' ,
Perhaps that seems a high price for
it, considering how poor your blood
is, and how your whole system is
prostrated,debilitated, and enfeebled.
People have been heard to say, under
such circumstances, that they would
not give the loss of a copper for the
choice between life and death. But
when it comes to actually drawing
near the grave, a man naturally draws
back, and says he does not want to
die. Life is very precious, and even
to a broken-down man it is worth
saving.
One dollar will buy a bottle of
limit's Iron Bitters. That one dollar
may start you on the road from
misery to recovery. A man must
take n very mean view of himself who
is not willing to invest that much in
roakinjj one serious effort to rescue
himselt from deadly debility, and to
step into the enjoyment of solid
health. Emm's Iron Sitters vitalizes
the blood, tones the nerves, and
rebuilds the system. Its work is
well known. Invest that dollar in t
bottle. 8
