Several peculiar eta wcro brought to light For instance, j* 10 two tally sheets from Webster district ero found to vary in several places, tho J umber of votes cast for each candidate as ;rtificd on ono sheet difToring from tho |jV umber stated by tlio other sheet to have ^ cen cast for the same candidate. This j., implication led to considerable discus, j on, an^ Anally it was remedied by going j'ai ver tho tally sheets and counting tho ten there marked, which were found to a respond. VA A fow mistakes of a like character were [inearthed in other districts, and romedied (yj iy the same process, without resorting to Ji. , recount of tho ballots cast j* A ItSCOUNT 1)K.M ASDKI). W Alfred CaMwell. Attorney Generallect, was present during part of tho pro- J, eedings, and after tho lkwrd had satis- .. acloriiy informed its workrMr. Cald- J, cell called attention to tho provision of he law which requires tho Board, upon J ho demand of any candidate voted for at in election, to open and recount tho tickets :ast in any precinct. He said he desired J o take advantage of this clause of the law o demand a recount of ballots cast at Elm 3rove precinct, in Triadelphla district 11 This demand niado something of a son- j. jation. The members of tho Board looked c uneasily at one another, and glanced over ? the situation with their minds' eyes, in a ii vain effort to conjecture what the aim of = this demand could be. It was suggested that Mr. Caldwell received a majority of . the votes cast in that district, in the county, and in tho State, and several Commissioners endeavored to get him to withdraw his demand. But ho was firm, ti though he wild it ? satisfy him if they 0 would merely glance over the ballots has- ? tily. L he oot what uk wanted. c There was no alternative, and the tickets c of that precinct were taken from the en- r velope and a very informal recount com- c menced. It was about half through when J Mr. Caldwell called a pause, inspected J with special care the last ticket exposed. } and then announced that the count neeu ' go 110 farther; he was satisfied. 1 This increased the perplexity of the { members, until a ray of light dawned on some one's mind, and he turned away s from the table with a significant "Aha!" ^ Then everybody looked at tho ticket. It had been a Democratic ticket, but the 1 district officers were cut off with a knife: i the name of Wilson was scratched off and Maxwell's substituted for Governor; that J of Caldwell for Attorney General erased j -and that of Hutchinson inserted; and Flick and Brown were written in instead s of Snyder and Woods, for Judges. Pros- j ecuting Attorney Jordan's name was also marked otf, but none written in its place. After several inquiries Mr. Caldwell announced that he had "caught t.him," and with more force than eloquence explained that the "him" referred to was Lewis j Baker, editor of the Jtenistcr, and member for West Virginia of the Democratic Xa- s tional Committee. s lots of talk. ^ Several others present professed to be equally positive that the ticket was Mr. * Bakers, and to be able to identify the hand- q writing anywhere. Mr. Caldwell was more than positive about it, and it was not c long until the story was widely circulated. It naturally caused some comment Some of the Democrats laughed, a larger nuin- f ber looked rueful, and still more swore. The Kemiblicans merelv winked at each other and let the Democrats monopolize the discussion. T The Democrats have charged Mr. Baker with a desire to defeat the major portion of the State ticket all through the campaign, and have declared that the * lifijhler was using its influence in that di- h rcction. The discovery resulting from Mr. jt Caldwell's sly operations was hailed as conclusive proof of his "treachery," and ? the members of the party who have been t* casting about for ways and means to oust ti Mr. Baker from his position in the National j, Committee, were still more active last e< svOning. One of them proposed to have ^ ithographic /?c timiltt of the ticket B[ jrinted and scattered broadcast over the n, ^tate. lie did not propose the means by b( diich he- expected to get the coveted ,v jallot. SOME OP TI1B TALK. g) This little incentive gave impetus to the ol )ld talk, as well as added new features to T he discussion. There was a good deal of b; :riticism of tlie Board for allowing a can- tr lidate to see the tickets, especially as in here has been a great deal of talk about n< Ur. Baker's vote, and some people thought bi he Commissioners might have divined rr he purpose of the demand for a recount. Jowever the law does not say that candi- 01 lates shall not be permitted to see the ni jallots upon a recount; and thero were wi 'side issues" which prevented the Com- tli nissioners from perceiving the object or n( he demand. Some of them thought the or ecount was demanded in the intcrestsof ev Jr. Hervey, the Republican candidate for tli Commissioner, who is a hrother-in-law of fo ilr. Caldwell's, and who was defeated by to Jeorge Woods. Ja The discovery has rovived the talk of tli boycotting" the Register. The Demo- ov rats, especially those who helped nomi- de iate Wilson for Governor, have for weeks recn waging a relentless war against the he {egisler, and claim to have made serious BI uroads upon its subscription list. The fri Drmer project to start a rival Democratic th rgan has also been resuscitated in street fri ?lk. ^ ze A NARROW ESCAPE jy rom nl)liutroun Fire in a Wholesale Drug: Illi Store. gh The alarm of fire sounded shortly bc>re 7 o'clock last evening was sent in om-box No. 24, at the corner of Main at [id Twelfth streets, and was occasioned ed y spontaneous combustion in the whole- 1% lie drug house of Laughlin Bros. & Co., .. l No. 1208 Main street The combustion 1 ^ 10k place in a lot of red Ore stored in w axes underneath a counter on the first ou oor about ten feet from the front door. Tho suspen* sion, or continued Idleness, in most eases, is caused by a disagreement between tho mill owners and the nailers, tho lutter objecting to being charged for breakages of their machines. This bono of contention is almost as old as the nail trade in Wheeling. Few workmen about I a mill can remember a time when there i wus not a difference of opinion on this subject. The nailers again demanded a change In this respcctlast week, and being refused, those who were at work quit and those who were idle refused to go to work yesterday as intended. Tl e tirin owning and operating the # Ohio City mill at Martin's JAirry, Ohio, is .one party laboring und.er this false impression. They snow it by their action in. proposing to thejr btiHers that they shall boil iron on Rnil after the 20tli day of October at live .dollar? and fifty oonts pel Ion. This notice was eiven to tho boilers of tho Ohio City mill on Friday or Saturday last by one of the firm, and this gentleman of the Arm did not Hesitate very much in giving his reasons for oiToring a reduction of twonty-~ five cents per ton, saying that the boilers of the Belmont mill were working at a reduction of twenty-five cents. Such remarks as these coming from a nail manufacturer are to be condemned: for the man who makes the statement either knows it is untrue, or at least docs not know it tobe true, and the Belmont boilers resent this means of inducing boilers elsewhere to accept reduced wages. It seems as though disinterested parties know more about Low the Uelinont ^mill is operated'than the proprietors or their employes do. 1 can assert positively and without fear of contradiction that th? Belinont Company never npproachod one of their boilera in regard to a reduction either before or after the secession of Belmont Lodge, or sintie the signing of last June's scale. If this statement is not sufficient to refute the false and slanderous asser-i Hon of designing people.-they can call at the office of the Belmont Nail Company, or any of the managers or boilers in the force department of the mill for information. .
