Have you ever noticed that some people cbaoge their inanueisas they do their garments?? these lor home, thou* for public places. Here is a dame of high degree who in her own home, ao f*r aa the visiting acquaintance know, ia tho pink of perfection. Khe howa ua into the eaaieat chair with an air which aaya, "If you desire to make me altogether comfortable during your viait take this favorite of mine and revel in it." She inquires about the family in tones so kindly and with ao much particularity that we wonder how a woman ??n?o ft nr niflintnncfi can ul uct mue iihihv ? ?- , find room in her heart for ho much sympathy. She seems to bear everybody's burdens. At the table she thinks of countless little things which the good man of the house is always overlooking. "Mydear,"she says, with j?'?lite hesitation, "My dear, I fear that Mr. Whatshlsname's steak is not so palatable as it might be? won't you see if you can't find him a bet* ter piece?" She is young, but she does this in so motherly a way that you look for her gray hairs, and wonder why the crow's feet tarry so long in their coming. Leaving her home you wonder?and ao do I?whether this very well-bred woman is capable of doing a rude thing. * -? I have seen this dame in public places when she seemed quite another person. In a street car, when a workiugman with bis tin kettle, returning from the day's labor, happened to brush against her silk as he aroBe to give her his seat, she looked so black that 1 could scarcely recognize her. She was so angry that she altogether forgot to give thanks for the seat. Upon one occasion, again in a street car?that great developer of dry plates?I couldn't Help an inward vicious smile when a woman with a child in her armR trod heavily on my lady's toot. The car had * given a lurch uud the burdened mother, a wan and weary looking soul, was almost thrown ofT her balance. She couldn't help it. She had to rtcover her footing in aomo way and some where, iJence the collison. This tirao black looks did not suflice. To theao were added harsh words. .My lady "/ell to scolding liko a very drab.'1 The mother with her child in her arms colored and then turned pale and said she was sorry, very, very sorry. Then everybody in the car saw that the lady was in the calico frock and the silk covered quite another sort of person. * Iseemylady sometimes in public assemblages. She always enters late. Two or three minutes pass before she can settle herself comfirtably She surveys the house with a cold, critical gaz? that comes very near to a ttare. She crumples and turns und twists and rattles her programme incessantly. Speaking to her escort she gives those in her vicinity the benefit of her criticisms, and she chooses to do this while the performance is in progress. I saw her once?in another city of coursewhen she was in company with some Jrouog persons of her own sex. They alowed themselves to titter and to giggle until they became hysterical. Seeing that the eyes of the house were turned on them in rebuke, and really having no desire to make a spectacle of themselves or to interfere with the performance, thev endeavored to restrain themselves. In vain. Hysteria is not so easily controlled. Thoy continued the peculiar demonstration when I am sure they would have given their heads to be able to subside. There was nothing on the stage at that time to excite laughter. There were some peculiarly distressing circumstances connected with this affair, but they need not be related. The point is that these young people know better and at home would do better. In this matter of putting off good manners and putting on bad for use in public places men are not above women; only it grieves us more in a woman, who suflora more by it. If we will take timo to think this all over we shall realize that it doesn't pay. * Beautiful September?month of frost and oysters, whose advent is always welcome, is once more about done for. September is a month worthy of honorable mention, at least I have always deemed her such. She is fitted in between the blazing, burning suns of July and August and the months of October and November when Nature and all mankind shiver in the chilling blasts that herald the approach of the snows and discomforts of winter. September is a kind month. Her days be just suited to pondering, dudes iu on.i?l!nn nl.ltllOd IfWrt.llinlHni* Ml (IflnriTH aiul drives during her lovely moonlight nights. All hail to September! * I spoke of winter and its discomforts. If the signs are to be believed we are to have a severe one this season. The crop of walnuts, chestnuts (both those that grow on trees and the other kind) and hickory nuts, it is said will be very prolific this fall, indicating that Nature foreshadows the severity of tho coming season by providing a liberal supply of food for the animals that eat tho nuts. * The other day I was told the following story: A gentleman while traveling in the wilds of Fayette county, this State, last winter, bad to pass the night in the lowly homeof?'4broomsager" who. before his family retired, offered the following prayer: "Now we lay we'uns down to sleep. We'uns are not jealous of our betters ana ef the snow falls fo' feet deep to* night, in the mawnin' perhaps the stranger will trade we'uns his watch and rhain even up fo' the old yellow mule." ? Bu Anybody Tolil Yoa? That Jack Froet Is waiting to catch us sapping? That the signal flag Vlth the black sqna-e in the center will warn na ol his approach? That politics often ruin men ? That Wheeling haa several notable, sad, examples of the rain thus wrought? That the indiscriminate and recklcss use of profanity often heard on our atreels ahould be stopped ? That corn and coona are both ripe ? That "Straw Hat,and Seersucker Suit," the great spectacular crate of the past season, haa been withdrawn? That autumn leaf parties will soon be au fait! That the last roeo of summer having laded, it Is time tor the rural debating society to sprout? That the m?nch?j d?a, etc., are near at band? That the way of the tranagreesor is bard ? That a policeman ought not to transgress ? That sundry patriots are sitting np o' nights with the postoffice? That catnip tea might do some good in ? case ol this kind! Tot Wrniruu. Humoroa> Elephant*. From "/tart* From the Life af a Oorrrtpon tent." ? A young friend asked me once to show him some elephants in undress, And I , took him along with me, having first bor- [ rowed an apron and tilled it with orange, l This he was to carry while accompanying ; me in the stables, but the moment we reached the door the herd set up such a o trumpeting?they had scented the fruit? J that he dropped the apron and its con* tents and scuttled off like a scared rabbit. There were eight elephants, and when I picked up the oranges I found 1 had twenty-five. I walked deliberately j along the line giving one to each; when I got to the exttemitv of the narrow stable I turned and was about to begin the distribution again, when I suddenly reflected that if elephant No. 7 in the row saw mo I | give two oranges in succession to No. 8, 1 he might imagine he was being cheated, and give ine a smack with his nroboscis? J | that is is whore the olephant falls short of J I the human being?so I went to the door | and begau tb novo as before. Thrice 1 went along the line, and then I was in a tlx. I hud one orange left, and 1 hati to get back to the door. Every elephant in the herd had his greedy gaze focussed on that orange. It was as much as my life whs worth to give it to any one J of them. What was I to do? I held it up conspicuously, coolly pei-led it, and sucked it myself. It was must amusing to ??' ?? ?? ?" thnun alnnhnnlR nnrftf&l I each otiier and shook their ponderous , aides. They thoroughly entered into the humor of the thing. Some fashionable ladies are not satisfied with ready-made fans, hut must have them made to order; they are, however, satisfied with Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup at 23 cents and take it regularly.
