TUK Wimi'KlllXU GALLb.ltY. As I pass along the ttreets at night?particularly on Saturday nights?I notice young men and young women, boyfl and girls, strolling along apparently with no special object in view beyond killing time. Young people who do this are very fortunate if they efcape all of the countless pitfalls which beset their way. There is a rea*on why they are walking the streets. Home dots not attract. This may be the /anit 0f th? homo?which is sometimes inerly a house, the four wallsand coiling of Dickens; none of the gentle, tenderialiuences which make good men and women, which stimulate the young mind to virtuous thoughts and noble actions, and in the after-day, when the hair is gray and the form bent and the tottering steps draw near the narrow house, are a3 the balm of sweet memories. Or, it uny be that homo does not attract because the young people refuse to be attracted by it ?a form of voluntary vagrancy which' foreshadows a dark and unhappy future. Perhaps those of ur who make homes do not always produce the bfrat work. Perhaps we do not always employ the beat materials at baud or peek to impress upon the job our best intelligence. There are few of .tjs, I ?yi fltirp, who do our whole duty in this regard. * * IIow delightful the atmosphere of a cultivated home! How sweet the social intercourse! How the visiting friend is made to feel at ease! Not long since I was one of many guests in Mich a home, and?will it be believed?there was a charming evening without the aid of dancing or of cards. Understand that I make 110 point of objection against thoae diversions, but there are jieruons who seem helpless iu the social circle without them. Well, there w.?s some amateur mind-reading, ajid with remarkable results. lfalfadc.z.m iu the company, men and women, tried it with wonderful success. The mind-reader, so-called was blind-folded, led into the room by a guide who knew what the ?* .nsi-vaofinp was to do and made the round with him or her. For example, a lady waa blind-folded. The guide of the same sex took her by the hand, placing the other hand on the shoulder, so leading her in the room. After tlm the mind reader is supposed to follow her own inclination in the first trial a handkerchief pinned on tho under side of a table cover was found and placed in tho pocket of a certain gentleman?precisely tho thing to "be done. Then a gentleman took a cigar from a stand on a table and placed it in the mouth of a lady who had been selected by the company to receive this p )lite attention. To mako the test still more sovero it was decided that a gentleman should kifs his own wife. He came into tho room, made at once far his wife though he did not know ft here she sat and, after some hesitation, came very near kissing his wife and then gave it up in despair. He must have discovered who the lady was and thought it improbable that he waa anywhere ncr thy right track. These performances were very in- , teresting and provoked a great deal of merriment. * There has been a good deal of speculation about mind-reading, but the interest- f ing fact in connection with the phenome- ( non called by that name is that it is easily produced. Try it, and see if you do not iind it so. 01 course the guide uncons- f cioutly makes the feat possible, hut even ; then the thing is not entirely explained. , As for example, when tho cigar was nut ] in the lady's mouth? What not in her , . lap or pocket ? The right hand is entin ly , beyond control of the guide, who walks on the leftside and holds the mind-reader's left hand. But how would one get along ( who lias noxmnur A few days since I war in Cincinnati on t & pleasure jaunt. While waudering { about seeing what I could soo, I noticed a conspicuous sign at the dcor of a well known and popular bar, advertising a drink for sale, that was a decided novelty r in such a place. It read, "Coffee, o cents j a Cup." I, who never go into a saloon? . after cofleo?stopped and entered the j place. I inquired whether somo boys had t not been playing a joke ou the establish- ? ment by hanging up the coffee sign. "No," j answered the mixologist, "that's a new f schemo and it's bound to win. You , see, a great many people don't like { to drink beer in winter, it's j too cold; and they don't like to drink , whisky because its too hot. Cotfec is a very good compromise aud wo are selling lota of it. The idea is to give a cup of cofTeo and lunch for ten cents. No busi- ( ness man can get a satisfactory lunch at ( any place but a saloon for ten cents; but s a good many business men don't like to e drink intoxicating liquors in order to get | their lunch, so wo give them coffee in- j stead. Already* I've seen scores of tem- ] peranco people come in here, who wouldn't j touch a drop of tho real stud for tho world, ( but they forego their dislike to entering a ? saloon because they can't resist tho tcmpta- c tion to get a good lunch and cup of cofreo { for ten cents." e I don't expect to bo investigated for j having this chat with a publican of Tork- , opolis. i c Him Anybody Told Yon? * That Winter is coming gentle Isaac? \ That forsooth, ono should now reclaim liis overcoat? That merchants should note the fact J that this is tho most favorable time to plant fall advertising? That the window decorator may do his lovel beat, tho dodger may bo thrust into j Hip hand of every inhabitant, but it is tho j standing display "ad." in the columns of n the people's favorite morning journal that ] causes the populace to risuas one man and t patronize Ine advertiser? 1] That I'rof.
