Our esteemed coteiupory, the Richmond, Va., Diipatch, bewails the decision 01 Judge iiugbcf, of the United States, District Court for Virginia, compelling the Auditor of the State to receive for taxes I the coupons for certain Virginia bonds iesued since the war iu one of Virginia's various adjustments of *her State debt. Speaking of the decision the JJiijiatch says, tbat: "It dwarfs the State into utter insignificance. Surely S'.at? sovm iguty has he-1 come a burleeque when the lowest Federal court cau force a State to accept coupons for taxes, compel lr?r to pay costs, and | make her tile a receipt iu that court fori money which pho has never received." It ie thus that "error dies amid her worshippers" while the doctrine of Federal supremacy goes on conquering aud to conquer. ~Th? VThut Market. With 58,000,000 of,wheat in Bight andio foreign demand it is indeed very difficult I lor the "bulls on "change" at Chicago and elsowhero to hold up the price. All indicatioue point to still lower prices in the near future. A Chicago dispatch to the New York Pott is to the following effort, and expresses about the exact character of the situation. ,4Tho statistical situtation oftho wheat market in further weakened by accumulating stceku hero and at other points. This is the more surprising from tho fact that the receipts at all other points show a steady weekly shrinkage compared with tho corresponding dates lust year. This condition of tho stocks has greatly disheartened many who have been persistent holders, and net a few have sold out and left tho trade uutil they see more assuriugevidences of an advance; yet there are still many believers in higher prices after the opening of the year, and they stubbornly refuse to accept any theory that is unfavorable to a realization ef their anticipations. In addition to h? <wrtAinLv of smaller resorves iu farmers' bands than at this date last year, they claim that wheat is the only article that has not improved in public confidence; hence they argue that no loading line ot merchandise or produce that is a positive necessity can long suffer while all others are prospering. On the other hand the bears point to diminished exports and enormous stocks in sight, coupled with the fact tbat a number of foreign countries whose competition America ia feeling in the bread importing countries of Furope will have the largest crops they have ever grown; hence it is useless to expect any material increase in the British or Continental demand, as the countries are not only necessitous sellers, but will accept lower prices than now rule herej MOUNT 1?* CHANTAL. F?atlrnl of th? Immaculate Conception?Entcrtalniug Mimical Exerclpea. Tk> tfu Editor of the InUllivctctr. Sir:?In the festival of the Immaculate Conception, Kb. Rev. J. J. The altar decorated with fresh flowers and blazing with lights, the chrystal chandelier in tho centre of the chapel, dazzling the eye with its brilliancy, the chains and pendants glitteriag like froBt and ieein the sunlight, while beneath knolt the pupils ia their simple dresses and white lace veils, the candidates for il._ tioaMnn linkto/l tannw tu-ink. mo ouunufcj ucmi?B uquwu wfvio ?mu?' ling like stars?all formed a very lovely anil impressive acono. After supper the Kt. Kov. Bishop, accompanied by the Misters, proceeded to Music Hall, where, alter they wore seated, the young ladies entered in their usual order, and when in their accustomed seats the programme oponcul with the poom, "The Night More Christmas," read by Miaa Mary Hatnil. It lacked the vivacity nececsary to a full appreciation of the de? scription; tho enunciation, however, was clear and distinct "An Evening Walk," written and wad by Alias Jennie Brent, was pretty and graphic in style. It showed a cultivated taste and a study and love of the beauties of nature. It was so ?leaoantly aud naturally read that Miss Brant's listeners ,..>..1.1 anallu an?nmnnnv hop in hup ramhln "The Sou ol a King lor Me," a poem recited bj Miss Beo Clifford, was given with good effect and von for her the applause of her audience. "Cisur de Uon at the llier of his Father," by Mra. llenians, a recitation by Miss Mai Forbes, was well rondered, and in tho pathetic passages showed stud; and ability on the part ol the young lady. A descriptive sketch, rend by Miss Lillie Potvin, was a poetic interpretation of the Concerto by Beethoven. It was read with clearness ef tone and good modulations. Miss Potvin brought out every idea so intelligently that her audience was enabled 1 to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the description. The vocal music of the evening, alternating with tho literary selections, was most pleasing, and aeveral voices unheard before, gave much satisfaction to their bearers. Mita Mai Forbes In "Th? Mar," by Kul Oollan, acquitted herself very creditably In tho trying ordeal of a first I appearance, while Miiia Mamie llealy , tang "Bote Leave* Falling On* by One," >y Millard, with much ease and sweetie's, pronouncing her words unusually . rell. Her voice is veiled, though otbervise good in qnality. Miss Nora Kerrisk tsng "The Lonely ? Rose," by Spoth, with good modulation ' uid ext>reesion. Her voice is clear and full, though, on this occasion, it was reniered very tremulous by stajre fright l In "The Nymph," by Geibel, budk by ' Miss Teresa Maser, the first high tone floated upon the air so lightly that we hardly knew whence it proceeded, and ita sweetness was a good preparation for the delicacy and finish with which the whole Bong was executed. Miss Maser's voice is most plcasiog in quality, but it is better suited to a parlor than to a large hall, where a greater volume is desirable. 'Marguerite," the waltz-song from "Faust," waa beautifully sung by Miss Mary Donobue, of Grafton. Her smoothness of execution and lightness of style were astonishing to those acquainted with the power of her sustained notes, and the whole evinced the steady progress made by this young lady in the high art she is studying. The superb Beethoven Concerto for two pianos was played by Miss Jennie Quinn and her teacher. The analysis of the com| position, read in advance, gave to the audience an ideal which was easy to fol I low out, owing to the exquisite rendition of the theme. Daring the entire performance, which lasted nearly a half hour, ono might have heard a piu drop, so deep was the silence, hut when the brilliant chorda of the finale rang out, the hall fairly shook with resounding and prolonged applause. In conclusion, tbe quarterly tickets for uniform amiability and observance of rules were awardeif to thofollowing young ladies: Misses (irace Jones, Roso Mczraw, Bee Clifford, Jennie Brent, Jennie Quinn, Lillie Fotviu, Teresa Maaer, Leila 'iingle, Mai Forbes, Jnlia Doran, Flora Bubamp, Nora Oppenheimer, Marie Hamil, Mary McColiongb, Anna McOollougb, Amy fcJarage, Mai Tyler, Annie Moran, Frankie iJandJan, Cora Welsh, JilJa Emery, Cecelia Gannon, Sadie Gundling, Kate Dergan. He also had with him a beautiful specimen of shell conglomerate which contains a largo percentage of ore. It is found about L'UO yards from tho ledge. The mines are owned by the Glenwood, W. Va., Tin and Mining Company, with headquarters at Glenwood, Mason county. Judge 0. P. T. Moore is President, Judge liussell, of Ohio, Vice-President, and Captain Ford is a Director. The veins of ore arc seven fett in thickness, and aro fouud in the top of tho hill ^about one hundred yards from the river. Tho yield of oie is about seven percent, or 140 pounds to tho ton. The Captain is confident that they have made one of the grandest discoveries of our day, and ;says he cares nothing for the repotts found in many of the newspapers charging fraud on tho company.
