The Chicago Tribune, which advocates
a license of $1,000, says there are in ?rjhibition
Iowa 2,300 liquor saloons?"proliibition

UniUr present conditions all the
evils of the drink traffic remain and are
intensified by the increase in number and
worse character of the saloons; only the
revenue has disappeared. II tho people
desire to combat successfully tho evils of
intemperance they will have to overhaul
their laws. There is no escape from tho
conclusion that their law is a coatly failure,
prejudicial to the morals of the State.

FrMldant Garrett'* ld?aa about What a
<}*ntl?nmit Should W?ar.
Iftxo York Tribune.
Mr. Garrett is worth anywhere from six
to ten millions of dollars, and ho is, therefore,
among the richest of Baltimore citizens.
His face is boyish. Iiis eyes are
blue and have an irrepressible inclination
to dance and twinkle, as though brimuiinif
with suppressed umuseinent. He hss hia
father's broad, full nose, and his father's
mouth, with its thick, though not sensual,
lips. He is much given to hearty laughing.
To speak generally, Mr. Garrett is of the
semi-pronounced blonde type. He wfcara
side-whiskers and a mustache. He stands
a trifle over the medium height and weighs
fully ISO pounds. He is plump, but not
corpulent. His manner is vivacious, his
gait springy, giving him in walking a clipper,
bounciug movement.
Dress with Mr. Garrett is a consideration
of the highest importance. In this
direction he steers with skillful diicriinination
between tho gaudy and the sombre.
His taste is fastidious and his every garment
must bo in the lateBt fashion and cut
with the greatest precision to the lines of
his figure. His clothing is concocted with
upreuie regard for the smallest details.
His wardrobe is extensive. As a matter
of fact, he baa nearly a hundred different
suits of clothes. They are all new and
can be jumped into in n jifly, no matter
how great the exigencies of the occasion.
They range from tho claw-hammor coat to
the fustian shooting-jacket, and the pantaloons
are a veritable symphony in wearing
apparel.
Mr. Barrett's tailor has his shop in New
York. This personage keeps tho railroad
president constantly m receipt of samples
of the latest styles of goods. So soon as he
finds anything that pleases his fancy he
writes his tailor a tow days before a contemplated
trip to New York to make him
a suit of that sample. Wlion ho reaches
New York the suit ii made and waiting
for him at the hotel. Ho fastidious and
dainty la he In such matters that ho frequently
strings his telegram out in length
to a thousand words in giving his tailor
the necessary precise directions. These
telegrams deal not only with tho broad
generalities of the tit of the coat, vest and
trousers, but explain in detail tho kind of
buttons to be usod, the number and exact
location of the pockets, and the like.
Mr. Garrett's collection of hats, canes
and umbrellas is practically numberless.
Visitors, upon ontoring his house, have
frequently been appalled by tho immense
number of hats distributed through the
halls, and have fallen into tho natural {
error of supposing that he is entering a <
vast delegation of his friend! at dinner. 1

An experienced fruit-dealer says he does
not want to put apples in the cellar or .
fruitrooiM, unfil there is a little hoarfrost r
insidrj the barrel. If good, sound apples,
and only such, are put in the barrel, and
the .apples are well shaken down, and the
head pressed in bo that there is no danger J
of the apples shaking in the barrel, a
slight front will not hurt them. By this
we mean, thai the barrel can bo exposed
to quite a sharp frost for a short time, "
without penetrating deep enough into the
barrel to chill the fruit to an injurious extent.
The great secret of keeping apples
through the winter is, to storo them in a
well ventilated room or cellar, that is kept
as near the freezing point as possible,
without actually freezing tbo apples. Ap- .
plea And potatoes should never be kf?pt in |
the same cellar, or if this is unavoidable, tho
potatoes should bo kept in tho warmest part
of the cellar, and the barrelsof apples, well
headed up, near the windows, whore, on j
days when the air outside is only a few
degrees above freezing, they can be treated
to a cold breeze from the open windows,
while at the same time the atmosphere in
the part of tho cellar where the potatoes
are kept, does not fall below forty de- .
irrees. With a thermometer in-the cellar,
it is quite possible to cool off the apples {
without, injuring tho potatoes. J):j not unbend
the barrels until the apples are !
wanted. It is rarely a good plan to sort ,
over the apples to pick out the rotten j
ones. Better let them remain undisturb- :
| ed. Apples in ripening, give oil'carbonic
acid, which can not be allowed to acc.umu|
late in the house cellar, but must be re- :
moved by ventilation. This deleterious ,
| gas, carbonic acid, aids in preserving the i
fruit, and it is oue of the advantages of an
I outside cellar, that this can be allowed to
remain.
