Thin is not only tbo great question ol to-day but likewise tbe ureal question ol the future la this couutry; and not alone in tbia country but in all civilized coun tries. Something In tbe nature of a revo lution la in pragma tbat promisee to con atitute not only a new era in the history of labor but of tbe entire aoci.il anil political condition of tbe coifntry, The preaent labor movement la without a parallel in the hiatory of the world. [ The ro have Wen great tradea-unlon uiove menta In England, and likewise In this couutry, hut none cf them approached in eomproheiiaiveueseandsyBteni the Knights of Labor movement, ?Many persons suppose that thla move ment will have its day ami ruu ita courae lllie u popular crate, anil then go tu piecea by ita own weight, assisted by ita follies aud t senses. Weobserv.tbataonieofour coteiuporarkc of the pr'ea incline to take thla view. It is compared to Know Notbinglain, Anti .Mu.oury and other like popular crszfs which had their rise and fall in the oourie of a few ywira. Ho will it be, wo are told, with the Knights of Labor. We do not look at thia movement in this way, We btlievo that the labor question in coraetfilog like ila preaent a'lape has come to may. And we do not I aee that it can li:i compared to uny of the so called popular crisis to which It baa been likened, rulltic.il organization* liivo their transient day because in the nature of things their issues are transient. The Auti-Slaveiy Society of the Uuileil Sluice bad to disband ufter slavery bad been abolished. Know Nothingism and Anti-Masonury had to die because their obj-iola did not enlist the sympathies of the mejjriiy cf the people. But it is different with a question as broad and universal as that of tho inter ests of labor. To perforin soino sort ol manual toil is the lotof the great mass of the people. To hu fairly compensated for that toil and not to be overworked while performing it, and to be comfortably housed, fed, clad and eurrounded in and out of the hours ol said toil, Is nil issue that comes home to the self interest of too many people to be compared witli any issue of an impersonal or sentimental character. The labor question is 111 the nature of an issue of lile and death importance. It I indirectly includes the supreme icsuo of life and death. It goes to the root of the personal and sccial well being of tbe mil lions. It la the ijuesllon of political econ omy, and, more than this, It is the ques tlon of modern civilization. The differ ence between a well paid an. J an under paid population crops out in their own physical, mental and moral lives, and also In those of their children. It enters into all the statistics of disease, crimo and pauperism. Hence wo say that tbe labor question is little short of the whole ques tion of civilization. The cry of "a fair day's wages for a fair day's work," was tbo cry the Chartists raised In England, and it is a cry that has been heard over sinco in that country and our own, It epitomized then as now the Issue between labor and capital. To en force this cry trades-unions wore enlarged aid perfected. To give it greater voice and effect the Knights organization was Instituted in this couutry. And it has been successful beyond all parallel in its mission, We hare no reason to suppose tbat this mission will end nntll the underpaid labor of this country has been approximately levelod up to tint piano of well paid labor. Tbe great mass of those who do the rough and hard work of society are underpaid. This has been the great trouble on tbe railroads of the country. This was what brought on the great railroad strike of 1877. As to bow far tlili jrent organization may carry its power, and what excesses It may commit, it is useless to speculate. It will probably ropeat history In this ro ?pect. But that It is destlnod to perform a great work for labor In this country there Is no doubt. II It makes excessive demands on employers and raises tlio scale of wages unduly high, a vast immigration of laborers will sot In from Europe, This will be a danger that the organization will have need to guard against. Another danger will be In ralslngthecost of manufactured goods in this country to a point that will not only prevent their export hut that even the present tariff will not protect. Until tills great movement plants Itself successfully In Europe, as no doubt It will ultimately do, and advances wages there above the starvation point, it will have to deal with the situation In tills country very cautiously and wisely in deed. If lahor wore readjusted throughout Kurope and paid what It ought to be paid, the hours of labor could everywhero be ?hortened, and thus more people be em. ployed at living wages, and the present exooss of production and consequent bankruptcy and stagnation In trade great ly curtailed, Iks Btorj ol an K||. Country girls often complain that their comparative Isolation deprives them in great measure ot the fair chance whloh every yottng woman ought to have to marry, Bat the grievance does not end here, Country (Iris say that though they may have a chance to marry they are often fortunate, under the circumstances, to get one chance, which Is not comfort i ing to pride and doe* not give them a fair opportunity to try their hearts and make aure that they are right. There is some reality In this grievance, particularly if the yottng woman live* in a long-settled tnntl community from which the young pen "go WMt" ai soon as they at* of narriageable age, leasing the hopelea naidevsto the cold consolation ol the old ipinaters. Ad Illinois girl haa, bit upon an expe Jiont which may inspire with hope Borne bosoms from which hope has well-nigh lied. In a shipment ol eggs irota the pa ternal farm she placed one on which aba had written; "Whoever eats this egg will please write to Miss Mollie Graham, l'aoa, 111." A young mail ol Bt. Louis took the hint, received In reply a letter which pleased, photographs were exchanged, aiid now there is a sound ol approaching mar riage bells. This touching pastoral will suggest to the ingenious mind other clever expe dients that may attract by their novelty. A dainty note might ha concealed in the mysterious sausage. A photograph rniifht be tied to the leg ol a chicken. Apples, potatoes, even the cider jug, might bo made to bear the tender message ol a heart that is waiting to ha loved. The facts are thus related by u gentleman who 1s acquainted with them minutely: "Threo years ago ex-Mayor Thompson, while on a pleasuro trip East, met Sonator Jones for the first tiniest the Ocean House, Newport.
