The campaign for and against the prohibitory amendment to the Constitution of West Virginia, has forsomo time been raging with more or lew violence. It is | dismaying to think what the atmospheric condition may bo live or six months hence, when election day will be fast approaching. The general proposition involves questions of morals and of public policyquestions which men of this .State ought to l>o able to discuss dispassionately, without personal rancor. Unless there shall beuchango for the better, this is not the way iu which the campaign is to bo carried on. Not all of tho prohibitionists, but some of the most active of them, have no patience with u man who does not favor prohibition. They take it for granted that thero is something wrong with the moral sido of him. lie may be as far as themselves from joining hands with the liquor interest?may himself bo a total abstainer from all intoxicants?but this will not save him in their opinion. Not l>eing with them he is against them; and *l?nf !u nil flinu no?wl to knnw. Tho sarno intolerance is Been among prohibitionists themselves. Those who favor a Third Party arc wont to look upon those, who do not as no better than tho wicked. Themselves persuaded that tho irtiird Party affords the best means of bringing about prohibi' tion, and through that the abolition of < tho liquor traffic, they caunot understand how there may bo sincerity cou- I pled with common sense on the part of the other class of prohibitionists. There is of course no lack of intoierancc in tho ranks of tho opponents of prohibition. Very many, themselves * ' *ot engaged in any branch of the liquor traffic, not drunkards', j>ossibly abstainers, aro absolutely unablo to realize that a man can favor prohibition without Ihjing ofT ie his upper story. The quu<tion having l>een submitted to tho peopiQ, us it should have been, tho people will determine it by their votes. The question will bo discussed, of course, but it should be discussed with due regard to the rights and honest intentions of everybody imterested. After tho vote shall have been counted and tho result declared, wt shall go on as before living tpgetUer as neighbors and, let us hope, as friends. ICIcli EiiuiirIi to Ih> IJbeml. Aire. Hendricks, widow of tho lnte Vice President, is chagrined to lenm thai she has found fault with Congress for giving pensions to Mrs. Logan aad Mrs. Blair and none to herself. Mm Hendricks declares that she has neither oxpressed nor felt so ungenerous a sentiment. She does think that a Government so rich could well aflord to pay her the undrawn salary of her late husband which now lies in the Treasury. Mrs. Hendricks is entirely right, and there is no indelicacy whatever in her suggestion. It is no more than Congress is in tho habit of doing every time a Congressman or n Senator dies. A body which can without scruple devote large sums of money to burying its members ?pay bills for whisky, champagne, cocktails, Havana cigars, for the mourners who go to pay the last evidence of resjwet to tho dear departed?can well atlbrd to do tho fair thing by tho widow of a man of whom the people thought enough to make him Vice President. If the proposition be put on the ground of liberality, then it is to bit said that the Government of the United States is nWn ?n IHwiriil UMil if miirht. tn front Mrs. Hendricks as well as it has treated other widows in similar cages. He is a narrow-gauge statesman who sees in this measure any undermining of our free in titutions. ABOUT NOTED PEOI'LE. Senator Hoar has received the degree of LL. I), from Harvard, Amherst, Yalo, Williams, and William and Alary. Mrs. Lelnud Stanford has recently presented a line uicmoriul chapel to Trinity 1'rotestant Episcopal Church, Sun Francisco. Senator Rannells has introduced a bill in the Ohio legislature providing that condemned men shall be executed by electricity. Dr. K. 31. Colt recently lost $30,000 in Wall street. Now he is in an insane asylum, and imagines thut he is Jay Gould's partner and worth $50,000. Louisa 31. Alcott directs in her will that all her manuscripts be burned, but this will not be likely to interfere with the publication of tho usual quantity of ]>08thumous stories. Dr. Morell Mackensio is friendly to reporters, in which respect, us well as in others, ho differs from his colleague, Dr. Bergmann, who when recently approached by a would-be interviewer, naitl abruptly: "Get out! or I'll have you arrested I" A. Branson Alcott was in his early years a sort of transcendental anarchist, opposed to government Taxes he especially disbelieved in and for a time persistently refused to pay any. He was once imprisoned for non-payment of taxes, and owed his release to Mr. Samuel Hoar, father of the present Senator, who paid them for him. Mr. Bjornntjerno Bjorntten lias been organizing in Norway a popular crusade against the Mormon emissaries who are seeking their prey there. He is an uncompromising foe of Russian tyranny, and thiuks that America, England au<( Scandinavia oufllit to form a grand federation to protect tho civilized world from the encroaching waves of ltussian barbarism. Secretary Whitnev has two sonH at boarding school, and one of them wrote home tue other day: "We have a debating society, and one of our favorite subjects is, The United States Navy, and How Might It Be Improved.'" I*erhaj* it never occurred to tho young man that the easiest and most expeditious iray to improve the navy would be to supply It with a new Secretary. He savs: There are two classes which shoufd not use the ballot, ? clergymen and women; one is the representative of the Heavenly King and the other subject to men." Democratic Deform. CUrdand Ixailrr. t I Under Public Printer Benedict's o regime an essay on diseases of grape- 3 vines was l>ound in a volume of Itebellion records, ami Senator Sherman's speech in the cover of one delivered by A Senator McPherson. The Congressional record seems to be the only publication p escaping the general disorder and that, probably, because quite old enough to r take care of itself. Benedict has evidently been letting the "devil" run the otlice while he discharged the printers for j>oli- * tical reasons only. A HuiW'tlnii to School Teacher*. Proton County Journal. I We publish this week Mr. Klkins's speech in full. To nine-tenths of our j |K*ot)le it will prove a revelation. It ought to bo studied in our schools as a part of the geography of the State. Preserve it. Let teachers give it to their geography classes. It is au eloquent and ^ Sjiliolarly" production. Mr. Hiking well performs the exceedingly difficult! task of making dry statistics and facts as in- 1 tcresting as a romance. ?t A Prophecy J'nrtly*Verlflt*<l. Virginia Frrr. I'm*. Miss Jennie Smith, so well known along the line of the Baltimore it Ohio and a zealous worker in tho enterprises which so engage theW. C.T.
