We are uncompromisingly in foif/r of the Americanxi/itcm of Protection*?IlepulAicun Platform. The Democratic Chairman of an Indiana County Committee lias sent out a circular inquiring after purchasable* voters. And bo Brice's "campaign of ideas" proeeedH. Mn. Ki.kinh will speak in the Opera House this evening. It will thus be possible for all to hear him in comfort. Every Democrat who honestly wants to know what is best for the country ought to hear him. M Norm no is more encouraging iu this ( campaign than the way the people turn j out by thousands to Republican meetings iu spite of rain and cold, damp air. They aro hungry for the truth and en- j thusiastic for the right. ( One of the most significant features of 1 the present campaign is the perfect har mony that exists in tho flepublican J party everywhere. The party is unanimous against Free Trade, aniUdlii them ' are hosts of Protection Democrats. ' Tim colored voters of West Virginia will not he deceived by the Democratic < scheme to inaugurate a^^ndopendent . movement. Democratic paper* vigorous- ] ly denied at the outset that it was any | other tlwn a voluntary action on the part of the colored men. These denials amount to nothing in the face of the I.n'TEllig exckr's recen t exposures. The Belhtire Tribune puts it in a way , that shows very plainly just how nearly ( "verbatim" the AV//wf<r'* garbled "steno- i graphic" Tdport of tiie joint debate at 1 Martinsburg was: The fairness of the Wheeling Jlctjitlcr'a report of the debate between Goll' and ' Wilson appwirs in itn giving four eol- ! unins to Uofi; cutting out ail the live j points to curtail it, and giviug Wilson ! fight columns. The Intelligence!: re- * port gave about equal space to each, a 1 little more to Wilson than to Golf. ? t A rniKNi) in Huntington sunds the | Intelligence!: a copy of a poster signed j by the Young Men's Democratic Club of that city, it is the frankest admission ] as to the destinutiou of the Democracy 1 we have yet seen. Hero is a verbatim copy of the unique advertisement: * "Ifain! FIooJ! .Snow! .Mud! Waist * Deep, will not Prevent the Unterrified ' Democracy from turning out with > Torches To-night. To death and per- t dition thev aro uoinir: To defeat nnd i damnation they must go. (Signed) 1 Young Men's Democratic Club." t ? -u > Nkvkk was truer word spoken than that the issue of Protection concerns i every man and woman who depend upon ( their oivn exertions fora living. Every- j thing rests on a popular understanding t of the tariir question, for no voter will go I against his own interest knowingly. If 1 you are not sure 011 tho subject, ask for ( information. The matter is all it is , claimed to be. Free Trade is the ulti- < mate purposo of the Mills bill; Protection that of tho Senate bill. Both re- J duce the surplus, and, if the Democratic theory bo correct, both reduce taxes. The Mills bill will bring lower wages to workingmen, and the Senate bill will not. How do wo know ? All such measures have done so in the past. Even children .1--'* tlx.:* In tl>ft rtr/1 n i UUU b j???w Miv.il nuguia iu tuv mv u ovv ond time. I ^ , This little "special dispatch" sent out \ l>y the National Democratic Committee, , is amusing to Republicans, but it must 1>c pathetic to the faithful Free Trade followers of G rover : Nkw YoKK,Oct. 15.?Among the latest 1 contribution** received to the people's campaign fund is one from thirty-seven ladies of Mercer, Pennsylvania, "friends ' of Mrs. Cleveland." This example will ] no doubt bo'followed by many other ladies who sympathize with the Demo- 1 cratic cause. The committee has exhausted Mr. | Cleveland's $10,000, Jay Gould's contri- | bution, the Standard Oil money and the other monopolists' contributions, and ' the money extorted from "a hordo of j ollice holders, with a zeal born of ben- < eflts received and fostered by hope of fa- 1 vors yet to come," by references to a future making up of their jewels, and J now stoops to beg from women. < TlioilfuUter Chunge* Front. I The llojistcr has learned something. ' Few people will believe this, but we 1 propose to demonstrate its truth; not , that it makes any intrinsic difference ( what tho Jlcguler says, but because it is ' one of tho Freo Trate poll parrots which echo what demagogues of more ability declare, and it is therefore an indication of what line of thought the leaders are talking. Vesterday for the lirst'time that paper admitted that the taritf does not necessarily increase tho cost of the protected article to the consumer. Heretofore W. L. Wilton and John K. Kenna nnil John R. Fellows and Allen G. Thunnan and "Windy" Wilson and Henry S. Walker and all the Free Traders big and little have gono overthe 1 country saying to farmer and workingman, "You are taxed to death"The tariff is robbing you"Ever}* protected f, article costs the consumer what it is tt really worth aud tho duty added." And the Rt'jirtcr echoed tho cries, "Robber tariff," "taxed to death," "the tariff is a tax." When soveral months ago tho Istklu ,.t 4_n._ MBM KH pnuivu U HUlira Ui unci UIIU J vith home people about familiar home ? articles?starch, calico, nails, tools, salt, < borax ct cel.?the IfajUler came back: ! "The tariff is a tax. If the. duty were reduced the price of the article would bo c reducedand it printed pretended talks j> with imaginary individuals to prove a his proposition. From that position to I he 0110 it now occupies is a far step of ] >rogress. .See its new line of argument: j In the report of the Island Hepubli- , an meeting the paper says: I V.'e all know that not an Knglish nail I :oul(l come into this country, tariff or J 10 tariir. In fact, it is acknowledged by I {( publicans and corroborated by Mr. Ukinson that there is no need of the 1 arifF on nails, because wo make them michti heapernnd better than England, 1 ilthough we pay higher wages. And then it says, why not take olT the ariir if it does no good! i What a weak, what a pitiable, what a ontemptible cirort to maintain an old position from a standpoint diametrically >pposed to it! For months Democratic >rators aud Democratic newspapers have )cen telling the farmer and the laborer, 'Every nail that goes into your humble loose is taxed. We propose to take olF he tax and give you cheaper nails." [/>! to-day they say the tariff on nails Iocs no good; therefore why not take it >117 Rather, siuco the tariff on nails does 10 harm, why not let it alone and quit joing over the country seeking to do* jeiye tho people? Why pretend the reluction of the nail tariff is to reduce the -ovenues when you know this is false? Why say nails are taxed when they are lot taxed, and you know it? Truly the lighting has been effective hat has pushed them so far. Now as to tools. A few months ago he Jicijifter said they were made dearer liy the tarill. On Wednesday tho In rBLLiGENCEit asked if tho tanll ados to he cost of the homo product, why are laws and planes, both protected, sold in bis country cheaper than they arc in [England ? Then the Jlejisitrr responds tliat the \tnericau manufacturer has two prices, ligherin this country than in foreign jountries for tho same goods. This i? ;ho old story about Oliver plows and \raea shovels, both proven false in this paper yesterday. On Wednesday the Hqjulcr said Oliver plows sold in this rountry for 510. Yesterday it admits that this was false, and that the price in iVIiiudinL' ih and has been for some time $11. So tho Free Trade idea goes from iitch to ditch, and ou November G it trill expire beneath the avalanche of ballots in the last ditch, faintly protesting, "Robber tariff," "taxed to death," 'fosters monopolies." In its report of Mr. Atkinson'sspeech Wednesday evening, tho litgirter quotes Mr. Atkinson thus: lion. W. L. Wilson had said there was i tax of $ ', on a $10 suit of woolen clothes. If that was so, then it followed that a good suit of woolen clothes could lie bought in England for $1. On this it comments: Mr. Atkinson, we suppose uninten tionally, misquotes Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson's statement was thnt on a suit icorth ?!0 there was $(> tax, making it cost to ho American consunior s'uiecn dollar*. Mr. Atkinson's statement is a manifest ibsurdity. "An absurdity" since wlien ? This was he Register's own position no longer ago hail October 3, when it said in its ediorial columns: Under the provisions of tho Mills bill Jirdio's $9 suit would be sold it iscaleuated for about $4 50 or $5 00. Since October :* the Jtegisler has learned io fiist that what it then laid down as he solemn fact it now regards as a 'manifest-absurdity." "How the Dollar-a-Day Lie Started" is tho cantion of a statement that has been prepared at the request of Chairman Huston, of the Republican State Committee, giving the origin, history md refutation of the falsehoods that have been eireulated to arouse tho prejudice of workingmen against General Harrison. The origin of tlio dollar-a-day lie is explained in the statement that, when it was started, no one could ho found to resume responsibility for it excent "Edwin F. Gould, known as an unreliable, half-crazy agitator." Notwithstanding the offer of a reward Df $-',000 for proof that anything of the kind was ever said by General Harrison, he falsehood has been given publication jy Democratic newspapers throughout ;he country. A worthless aflidavit from John G. Schwartz is tho onlv evidence hat has ever been produced in support ?f the charge, with the exception of a few statements, varying in praseology, which were procured by Levi O. Bailey, i Democratic politician associated with tho gam: led by Sim Coy, now in the penitentiary for having committed election frauds in 18S0. Recently it was Jiscovered that a Knight of Labor asjembly at Canisteo, N. Y., has issued a circular embracing a letter by 12. F. Souid reiterating tho dollar-a-day lie A*ith many additional false statements. Bailey and Gould, who liave made the charges a^aiuet General : Harrison, were not present. "It would *eem entirely unnecessary to publish a ienial of such silly, ridiculous falsehoods," tlie article states, but for the purpose of getting before the public the plain truth u number of aliidavits are published. All of the affidavits deny, ttnequivowily deny" that General Harrison ever used the language attributed to him or Anything kindred to it. Among the names appended to these sworn staterncnts of denial is that of Dr. Patrick H. Jamison, one of the best known physi- 1 L'iansin Indianupolis. It was ho who, during the strike ot 1877, suggested the formation of a citizens' committee. He did so in the interest of striking rail- , road employes as well as of law aud order. He was nresent at all the meetincs and heard all that Gcuerfll Harrison saul. Others who signed similar sworn denials arc General Foster, Air. Joseph It. Perry, a prominent business man, and John T. Pressley, Sberitr of Marion county at the time of the railroad Htriko of 1877. Affidavits from Willis I. La Rue, Henry McPeek ami Alphetis Knight, otherre'presentitivestrikers who were present at the conference, are also get forth contradicting completely the falsehoods of Gould. Thomas W. Christian, a brick mason, endorses the aliidavits of General Foster and Mr. Perry as true. William S. Elliott, who was one of the strikers, in a sworn statement contradicting Gould's assertions, says: "I was in harmony with the strikers ut that time. I wanted the strikers to succeed in their demands, and was present at the conference for that reason. I heard all General Harrison said, and while he spoke earnestly, he spoko very kindly and entirely in" the interest of the men." Additional affidavits arc presented by Charles P. Watson and James A. wildmau, averring that William Klinesraith, Master Workman of District Assembly 100, Knights ot Labor, had never sanctioned the letter sent out by Gould olliciallv, and tiiat the seal of the assembly had been placed upon it without authority. An affidavit by John K. Kobinson completes the refutation. Mr. Kobinson avers: "That he is well acquainted with one KJward Gould, who is now making political speeches in which ho is attacking the personal record of General Harrison; that on or about the 7th August, 1888, said Edward Gould, in a conversation addressed to afliant and others, said: 'That a man with a particle of brains would notac cuse General Harrison of milking such a statement as that a dollar a day was good enough wages for any workingman, and that he (Gould) did not believe that Harrison ever said it, because a man would be a fool who would make such a statement, and General Harrison was no fool.'" The foreging is endorsed as true in affidavits bearing the names of Albert Hoffman, John A. Coulter, Silas II. Brittain, John II. Bellis and David K. Williams. On last Saturday night Lady Kern Assembly, K. of L., passed resolutions condemning Gould's action severely and branding bis statements as "false and malicious, and unworthy of a Knight of Labor." "Conitiiiiii>tioii Can ho Cured." Dr. J. 8. Combs, Owensville, Ohio, says: "I have given Scott's Emulsion of L'oil Liver Uil Willi iiypopnospuites to four patients with better results than seemed possible with any remedv. All were hereditary eases of Lung disease, and advunced to that stage when Coughs, pain iiv.tho chest, frequent breathing, frequent pulse, fever and Emaciation.
