letters of Charles iiurdette Hart, concerning
prohibition in Maine. Heretofore
they have been kind enough to admit
to your columns communications
pro and con upon this question now before
the people of West Virginia. Won't
you, therefore, allow me just one word
more ?
(1.) Nobody has claimed that t he Elaine
; law is thoroughly, or oven fairly enfused
in Portland una a few other places.
Neither is our own partially prohibitory
law enfused in the-diy of Wheeling.

places where he could buy liquors as he
fpund in Portland on a week day.

(;j.) The consumption of liquors per
capita in Maine is less than in any otner
I State, except perhaps, South Carolina:
(4.) There is not a distillery or brewery
operated in Maine.
Outside of the few cities referred to,
? drunkenness is almost unknown, and
J the people waste nothing for liquors.
? (b) Yor twenty years past the Jiepublicans
of Maine have never failed in their
State conventions to endorse the prohibir
tory law. Even the Democrats have fret
quently endorsed it. After many years
; experience with prohibition under
statutary law, the people in 1884 put it
" into their State Constitution by au over*

t (0) The leading Republicans of the
, State have repeatedly given it their unqualified
public endorsement. James

. his speeches in Maine gave it his un
qualified endorsement by saying umong

York Tribune. These facts ought to be

r pose of Mr. Hart's letters,

[; these letters emphasize the necessity foi
i. a Prohibition party. A very responsi{
ble gentleman iu Maine makes the fol*
lowing public declaration,and challenges
; an investigation as to the fact. If found
untrue lie will pay a forfeit of two hum
r dred dollars: "Nine-tenths Of tho host
I of rum-sellers of Portland, Bantror and
other Maine cities, vote the Republican
r ticket and contribute immense amount*

f openly and boldly carry on their work
