Harmon Baric in Richmond Ditpalch. West Virginia's literary story iinot a long one. Perhaps it will not be considered a brilliant one, bat there is hope of 1 many bright chapters yet to be written. ! To breathe a "literary atmosphere" in j that State one must create it and take it J abont with him; bat this does not mean that its citizens do not have literary t taste, education aud culturo. Their ac- 1 tivities are directed rather toward the t building of railroads, coke-ovens, line I houses, lumber mills and bung fsctories I than toward the making of books. But in view of the fact that, in the estimation of roen the world over, even a bung 1 outweighs a book, this is not to be won* dered at. However, West Virginia has s produced some highly creditable literary l workers, and I want to mention some of them. NAMES PBOM TUK BOLL. First of all was Colonel Alexander Withers, a highly educated Virginia gentleman, whose mother was, I believe, a first couain of Sir Walter Scott. He graduated at the famous old college of William aud Mary and afterward mudied law. Later he moved west of the mountains and in 1831 published at Clarksburg, "Chronicles of Border Warfare," a well written work containing a vast store of information concerning the' ?ettl?ment of Western Virginia?a store which has furnished liberal supplies for very writer on that subject since his day. D dishonored name is worthily borne ^ by his granddaughter, Mies Emma With* a e?s. of Glenville, W. Va.. a writer of thoughtful and graceful verse. Her poems have been widely published, but she has not yet yielded to the tempta- 8 lion te put her name on the title-page o of a book. q A JOURNAL TO HKfl CREDIT. * Patrick Gass's famous "Journal of the 0 Lewis aud Clarke Expedition to the Pa- * cific" is not strictly a literary prodnc- , tion, but it was of great importance, and J Western Virginia asks that it be put * lown to her credit Gass lived forsome 0 limo in what iB now Brooke county, {J West Virginia, where some of his de- 11 scendants still reside. The publication 8 of his "Journal" ante-dated Withers's "Border Warfare" one year, I believe. Then there was delightful old "Porte Crayon" (General David A. Strother), n whose "Virginia Illustrated." a series of c illustrated articles in Harper's Monthly, v and afterward published in book form, ? attracted wide attention and made for {; him a national reputation. After taking u his collcgo degree he went to Home and J ppent two or threo years studying art, so 0 that ho was able to combine pen and fi pencil in nearly all of his literary work. ? From 1879 to 1885 Strother was Consul u General to Mexico, an3 collected while o there material for a work on the charac- J tor OI IUO jUOXlUBIJB, I)lib UIO UCtllll 1U ], 1888 prevented his liaishing it. MORE RECENT WRITERS. These tbree?Withers, Gass and / Strother?were the most notable of the c early writers living in Western Virginia, i The more recent years have brought forth quite a number of literary people wbo have won for themselves the right j to that name. . Hon. Daniel Bedinger- Lucas, preai- t dent of tho Supreme Court of Appeals of <] the State, is a poet /a well as a judge. lie has published "The Maid of North- i umberland," "The Land Where We Lay . Dreaming," "Ballads and Madrigals, . "St. Agnes of Guienne," and other ' verses. His ballads and lyric8 especially | are graceful and musical. He does not , philosophize or sermonize, but lets the beauty of his rhymes preach its own sermon. Fortunately his judicial duties have not caused him to abandon his pen, and wo occasionally still havo a pretty ballad or a delightful madrigal j from him. POLITICS, LAW AND LITERATURE. | Congressman Georgn Wesley Atkin- > son, of the First West Virginia district, 1 combines politics, literature and the law. Strange bed-fellows, indeed, but he has , succeeded in making them lie down ' gracefully together. lie is the author of \ "Tho West Virginia Pulpit," "Among the Moonshiners," "A History of Ka nawha," "Don't," and ''Prominent Men 1 of West Virginia." The last named is ' just out of the press, and is odited by ! Mr. Atkinson and A. F. Gibbons, of ! Charleston, together. The latter is a aucceeeful writer of both prose end verse. 1 Mr. Hu Maxwell, of Tucker county, has published a volume of verse which 1 he calls "Idyls of tho Golden Shore," most of the poems being written while the author pas residing temporarily in California. They are quite creditable productions. A IIISTORr. Mr. Virgil A. Lewis, of Mason county, about a year ago, published a "History ol West Virginia." an extensive work in two parts and covering 744 pages. It was the result of an immense amount of labor and research on the part of the author, being the first attempt to cover the entire field of West Virginia history. It has had a largo sale and is one of the State's most important literary productions. Dr. John P. Bale, of Charleston, 1b the author of an exceedingly interesting history of "Trans-Allegheny Pioneers," beginning aa early as 1748. It is a book of about 300 pages crowded with facts, incidents, and anecdotes ol the early days in tho Great Kanawha Valley. WRITERS AM) TIAC1IKU. Homo ol the members of the (acuity of the West Virginia University have been writing as well ss teaching. I). B. l'aiinton, LL. D? formerly Vice President of that mediation, published lut year, through Putnam's Bone, a very able and scholarly treatise on "Christian Theism," which haa been received generally as one of the moat satisfactory and valuable works on that subject. Professor I. 0. White, Ph. D , the eminent geologist, haa contributed largely to the I scientific literature of the country dur leg the last ten or fifteen years, and Or. J. W. Hartigan has issued an excellent text-book ou physiology and hygiene. Returning to poetry we have Urs. Danske Dandridge, of 8hspherdatown, whose exquisite little volume of dainty and charming verao to which she gave . tbe happy title of "Joy and Other . Poems," made for hor a circle of frienda and admirers which la aura to be enlarged and strengthened by herseoond . volume, "Rose Brake," which la just out. Tbe critics have been very kind to her, the genuineness other poetic fire I being recognised. Mr. William Lelghton, who moved from Wheeling to Chicago a short time ago. ia the author of two stirring dramas ?'The Hons of Godwin" and "At the Court of King Edwin," and a blankverse poem called "Change; A Whisper of the Sphinx." At the time ol thei publication they were much talko boot mil praised, many people regard ing the drams* quite u sooil u Tenn y eon's '-Harold," which treats ol the aami historical theme. BOXilfCIBS. In fiction there ie the well-known name o( Mrs. Alexander McVeigh Miller, who resides near Alderaon, Monroe county, and who is paid, I believe, a salary by Robert Bonner's Sons, Mew York. Also, Miss McLeod. formerly of Parkerabnrgand now of Wheeling, whoee "Captain McDonald's Daughters" was accepted and published by the Harpers. When the book appeared It created something of a eeuaatloa at Parkorsbnrg became of tbe fact that several prominent residents appeared in the bonk nnder thin disgniees. There shonld be mentioned, also, Mrs. Mary Bowen, writer of verse for the Youlli't Companion and other periodicals; the venerable ex-8enalor Waitmau T. Willey, who wrote a life of Philip Doddridge; Hon. John A. Hutchineon, the author of two or three able law treatises; Mm. Jacob Brlttingbam, a writer of verse; MiaeAuna Leach, a clever story writer, and Mr. A. L Wade, whose littlo work on "A Graduating System for Country Schools" has been accepted as the best thing on that subject. romoNAL. Among the authors of distinction who rere formerly reaidentsof West Virginia ire James Lane Allen, ol Kentucky; Mrs. Rebecca Harding Davla, Miss Katharine Pearson Woods and Robert Utirna Wilson. I have attempted simply to call attenion in this brief article to some of West v'irciuiu'a literary workers, and to ask bat tbe smoke from our furnaces and actories may not entirely hide them rom public view. Tbe Old Dominion. fetB York Preu. The authorities in the colony of Vir;iuia at the time of the contest In Engand between the Stnarte and Oromw'ell ippear to have been devoted to the Jtuarts, and when the Oromwellian gov rnment threatened to send a fleet over lere to reduce the colony to oubmission, ib officials dispatched a messenger to 'oung Charles, who wss afterward King if England under the title of Charles I., but who was then hiding in France, o come over and be King of Virginia, t is said that Charles was on the point if starting'when the collapse of the Commonwealth and the Oromwellian egirne took place, which sent him to he Eoglish throne.
