The collapse of a big Kansas City investment company suggests once more that it io a good .thing to put your money .in something you know about and not too far from home. The Kansas city concern made barrels of money for its patrons?on paper. Hon. Wm. L. No American likes to strike a fellow under his own size who looks as though he hadn't bad a square meal for fifty years. Accept, sir, &c. James O. Blaine. Dirt is tlie raw material of dust. Now we are told by one who claims to know that Mary Anderson Navarro la not a mother, but eho is unhappy and Bick and hor liege lord is morose. This may or may not be true, but thia ia a fact, that men and women who have caught tho popular fancy as actors rarely are happy without the applause which brings a aweet intoxication. Da. Hkxky B. Bauku, of Michigan, formerly President of the American Health Association, says the causo of grip ia too much ozone and north wind, which irritates the throat and air passages and gives the intluenia germs a good place to take hold. What we want now is a foreign market for ourexcesBof ozone and north wind. Many people enjoy a rattling cocking main, and it the police are going to find fault with tho performance, those who like that sort of thing would suggest about tho hour the Martin's Ferry police choso for their call. Tin accomplished editor of our esteemed contemporary, Jl /'roprewo, does not like Mr. Blaine's way of putting forth tho platform on which thia country stands in relation to the rest of the world. It Is as clever a bit ot writing as one is likely to find. The paragraph hangs on the aignltlcant-"ll" and puts Italy to her proofs. If, says Mr. Blaine In substance, yen can show that some of your people were killed pt New Orleans; if you can show that they were living there under onr treaty with you "and not in notation of our immigration lain;" it yon can (how that they were not living in violation of our laws, Statoand Federal; if yon can ebow that the State officers were culpable, and bave elnce been negligent abont bringing tbe guilty to justice, then yon will bave a case which the President will l?y before Congress with > view to indemnity. CLABKKCB J100RB APPOINTED ] To ft IVIm Position in the Revenue Service J nt Loalavllle. Mr. Clarence Moore, (well known and . popoltr young West Virginian, baa been ' appointed by Commissioner Muon to the poaltion of Internal Revenue Agent lor the diatrict comprising Kentucky and , lenneaaee, with headqnartera at Louisville. He ancceeda Ool. W. J. Wilmore, an old time revenue man who baa resigned to take charge of a distillery. The appointment, or rather assignment of Clarence Moore to thia position baa been a great surprise to the many applicants 1 for the ouice from Kentucky, and bas ' left them In a somewhat dazed condition. 1 The Louisville Timet prints a picture 1 of Mr. Moore's handsome faco, and I a peaks of him aa follows: Revenue Agent Moore is a yonng man I for the position, being yet under thirty years of age. He has eeen eight years' I service under the Government in the j Revenuo Department, having given particular attention to the law bearing on 1 the service in which he has been employed. Before coming to Kentucky, ' Mr. Moore bad charge of the North Car- 1 olina division. Hie present assignment is, therefore, no promotion, and the salary attached to bia new place, $10 a day and expenses, is the same as he received in North Carolina. The divieion of which he recently had charge ranks next in importance to Kentucky and Tenneesoe. Mr. Mooro is an exceedingly young man to be given so Important a position and evidently stands bigb in the eetimation of the Cominissionof of Internal Revenue. Mr. Moore arrived in tho city shortly after Col. Wilmore's resignation was Bret tendered, and at the very time Col. Wilmore and Ool. Collier were in Washington endeavoring to secure the appointment of Creed Cardwell. Hia instructions weie to work eubject to the orders of Ool. Wilmore. That be was to be that official's successor nobody seemed to imagine. He went quietly to work and soon showed that ne was a well noeted Revenue Agent, but still thelocal Republicans supposed tie was Here merely for special duty. The news of Mr. Moore's appointment staggered the Kentucky politicians. Several insisted bis appointment was only temporary aud that he would only serve until an older official who had seen more service had been decided on by the Commissioner. This seems hardly in the line of probability, however.
