A GOOD GHOST STORY Which coraoa to Hand from out in Marshall Oouuty. STRANGE HAPPENINGS AT ft HOUSE Where Ci'unnlH havo Tried Night Nlglit, but in Vain, to Hurt u CI no to tlio Catise?l$.xploaioiiH, Win dows Broken ami Doom Rattled. Tho Perpetrators Ballet Proof. Keports como from tlio vicinity of Loudensville, Marshall county, of bouio .-.trance happenings that would make a capital ghost story, but at this ago of tlio world ghost stories aro not in it, bo it is enough to rolato tho incldonta as they were given to a reporter ami let the reailor form his own conclusions. About two weeks ago strango ami weird noises and reports began to an noy tho family of a wealthy farmer liv in# on tho hills back xji tho abovo named town. While tho family was seeking repose a loud report would bo heard, as of a gun being fired off just . utsido tho house. Search \vould bo made all around tho premises, but nothing could l?o found to indicate tho presence oi anything or anybody that could causo such a noise. About the timo tho family would get settled down ready to turn in again, crash would go the glass in a window, aud all would bo confusion again; then an outsido door would bo shaken as though somebody was trying to pull it from its hinges. Not'only has tho family kept a close lookout, but four or live men havo been ! i pt on guard, both in moonlight and darkness, and whilo the strango noises and weird transactions no on as usual, nothing lias yet been discovered that would throw tho slightest light on tho mystery. Glass will bo smashed and loud reports occur "right under tho nose oi the guard," as tho reliable in formant put, it, but tho closest scrutiny reveals nothing. Tho family is distracted and tho guards worn'out and no solution of tlio mystery in sight. Tho farmer thought to"catch somebody by shooting through tho doors when they wore shaken; ho lie.loaded his trusty rillo and when the outside door was seized by tho shakes ho would bang away, sending a bullet crashing through tho thin panel oi tlio door, expecting when it was unbolted and opened to find the prostrate form of his tormentor lying lifeless at his feet, but no traco oi anything has been banged in this way, although the doors havo been in that manner riddled with bullets. Tho matter is puzzling in the ex treme, and there must bo some explana tion of it, but it docs not appear 011 the Hirfacc. The farmer at whose house these things are taking placo is known throughout tho county, and ho is wealthy and influential. The source of tlio information is the most reliable and trustworthy. It is somewhat like tho case of tlio 31cComas "haunted house," over in Belmont county twelvo or fifteen years ago, which" attracted national attention be fore it was discovered that a hysterical girl's very simple tricks were at tho bottom of all tho seemingly mysterious manifestations. AT THE THEATRES. A Itaro List of Attractions Offered l>y the Local Mnnagorji this Week. "Daniol Boone" had tho usual largo and yelling audience at tlio Grand Sat urday night. At tlio Opora House "Birds oi a Feather" was not well patron ized. The fact is theatre goers have had enough of tlio farce-comody business with specialty attachments, and only the best can do a good business any more. This evening a play by the same author, "A Barrol oi Money, will ho seen at tho Grand. At tho Opera IIouso tho Howard Burlesque company, with Eva Itav Hamilton and lots of good tpcciulty artists will be the attraction. Friday afternoon aud evening Gilmore's band will give two concorts. Thoso who want to see something good should visit tho Acad emy this afternoon or evening. "A Uurrol of Money." "A Barrel of Monov." Who doesn't want it?" And who won't avail them selves of a chance to see it though they | cannot possess it? This bright and i unique comedy will bo tho attraction at the Grand Monday and Tuesday. Tho stage ollccts during tho great iron mill I scene, a feature of tho play, aro said to excite the utmost admiration, so per fectly, so realistically doc3 tho large en nine* work, tho machinery move and the hands whir. Tho manner in which a young girl, tied to ono of tho revolving bolts, is saved from almost certain death, i.i a new and striking departure in stage mechanism. Tho Giliuoro Concerts. The musical event of tho season will without question bo the two concerts at tho Opera Ilouso next Friday by the (iilmore band. Two different program mes will be rendered, and features will bo tho famous Intorraczzio from "Cavilleria liusticana," which is said to | hr.vo made tho success of tho opera, the I solos, instrumental and vocal, "Shor-, man's March to tho Sea" transformed | into a funeral march, and "Columbia" with solo variations for a wido rango of i instruments. "Joshua Siiujilcluu" Coming. On Thursday evoning tho new rural comedy called "Joshua Simpkins" will lie at the Grand for ono night. Tho veteran actor, Mr. J. W. Garner, is tho fitar. In addition to a number of new features, they carry thoirown band and orchestra and mako a parade as farmers, which is said to bo very ludicrous and funny. Seat3 will bo placed ou salo at Uenthor's on Wednesday. Anmtonr ThoaU-lcaltt. Some well known amateurs havo boon rehearsing for some time a couplo of dramatic pieces, which will bo perforin j'd some timo in January. A doublo bill, "Down by tho Sea" and "Box and Cox," will bo performed. The following peoplo will take part: Tiie Misses Janle Ciood, Minnio Loring and Mattie Cald well, and Messrs. Charles W. List, E. B. I ran/.heim, R. C. llaase, Charles B. Ott, B. Simpson and W. W. Whitinyer. JcfToraou in "Tho ltlval?." Tho xnero announcement that Joe Jotl'orson will appear at tho Wheeling Opera llouao next Saturday oveuing in "Tiio Rivals" ought to bo and doubting* will bo sufficient to pack tho house, and thoso who want to seo him and Mro. A MEAT "WAGON STRUCK By nn Engine nml binnshed? The Driver nml JIor.se Escape. Late Saturday afternoon Wm.Burk ley, Jr., liad an extremely narrow escape from being killed in Kirkwood by a C., L. & W. engine. lie was driv ing a meat wagon into Kirkwood, and just before ho readied the C., L. & W. tracks the company's flagman warned him of an approaching engine and cau tioned him to wait until it passed. Burkley saw the engine, and thinking ho had time to cross ahead of it, started on. The engine was backing up slowly with two brakemen standing on the front step. Burkley succeeded in get ting the wagon load of meat on the track in titnefor it to bo struck squarely in tho center. The engine pushed it quito a distance along tho track, break ing all tho wheels and tho bed and scattering meat in all directions. Tho two brakemen got of! just as the wheels struck, and Burkley immediate ly afterward. No one was"hurt and tho horses sustained no injuries bovond a rough shaking up as they fcero "jerked along with tho wagon. Yafd engines, as a rule, pass over the crossing much more rapidly than did this ono, and had it been running more rapidly tho accident would certainly have cost Burk ley his life. Thu rapidly rising river backed the water in tlio crock up so that it covered the south abutment all but tho tips of the htoncu which havo been placed in position, and about half of tho now utono work on the north end. it was apparent lato yesterday afternoon that tho water would yet cover tho wholo business on both ends. Tho uuutli abutment is not as lii^li as tho north by one course of stone. Where yesterday morning tho workmen had ? a mortar bed used in mixing tho cement to pour between the cracks of tho stone, last evening old cement barrels were lloat ing about in a very dirty lake of water. One engine used in operating the big derrick on tho Houth abutment was in the water for about half its depth. It is uncertain how Ions tho liich water will delay tho work. It is said that no damage Is to bo feared to tho work, unless the sand boxes should suffer, and as they are plugged with nrecn wood not likely to Hwell, it is hoped that tlioy will come out of tho bath all right. Thoso of tho stones which had not boon cemented will prob ably have to bo reset, as the water will leavo a sodimont in tho cracks where tho cement is to be.
