BLfllNE'3 GRAVE Marked by an Old Hickory Tree at His Bequest. HE CHOSE THE LIVING MONUMENT And Desired No Impressive or Costly Stone? When He Bought the Cemetery Lot Ho Aslced that the Tree Ilemafn and that It Should Mark the Head ot His Own Grave? It was Blasted by Lightning, but Not Killed. Washington Pott. There is in this city a noted crave uumarked by any monument save that o! nature, an old forest tree, and yet a gravo that is the Mecca of more pilgrims than any other in this part of the country save that of the first President at Mount Vernon. It is the grave ot James G. Blaine in Oak Hill cemetery. To the casual observer thero is nothing about the spot that marks it as tbe Dunai piace 01 one 01 uie moat prominent figures in American history since the civil war. To tho future antiquarian searching out the history of tho nation's illustrious dead there will be nothing but inference on which to base a theory of James G. Blaine's burial place. There is not even a raised mound of earth over this or the othoc two adjoining graves. The graves of Walker Blaine and of his sister, Mrs. Alice Stanwood Coppinger, are marked by plain monuments, tho first a round-top slab of marble without a line of ornamentation except the inscription. This reads: "Walker Blaine, bom Augusta, Me., May 18, 1855. Died, Washington, January 15, 1S90." The gravo of Mrs. Coppinger is marked by a Celtic cross, about four feet high, inscribed as follows: "Alice 6tanwood, daughter of James G. Blaine, and wife of Colonel J. I J. Coppinger, U. 8. A. Born, Aagusta, ' Mo., March 18, 18(?0. Died, Washington, February 2,1890. Erected by her sorrowing husband." JUST TIIB INITIALS. Over the grave of J. G. Blaino there is neither monument or inscription save a small foot.stono with the initials "J. G. B." At the head of the grave stands a blasted tree, which is, in accordance with the dead statesman's wish, his I onlv monument. The tree was a mag nificent hickory one of many of its kind that divido the honors of the hillside with tho magnificent oaks that givo the cemetery its name. The absence of a moeument is not a sign of noglect, but was his own request. Upon the death of his favorite son. Walker Blaine, tho then secretary of state solected a lot in Oak XIill cemetery, one down the hill from tho little red sandstone chapel and overlooking tho waters of Rock Creek. Here Walker Blaine was buried, and when, not long afterward, Mr. Blaine's daughter, Mrs. Coppinger, diod, he bought tho adjoining lot, whore she was interred. On this lot there stood an old hickory tree. Some years before it had been struck by lightning, and had died at tho top, but it was trimmed and revived, and now bids fair to reach as green an old ago as any other tree in tho cemetery. Mr. Blaine requested when ho bought the second lot that this tree should never be destroyed, and that on his death he should bo buried be* noath it. When, aftor weeks of illnoss, the end crime, his wish was carried out, and the tree now stands in liou of a monumout to mark his resting place. PILGRIMS SEEK TUE GRAVE. Yet this almost unmarked grave is more sought out than that of auy other in the cemetery, aud visitors every day hurry past tho many handsome monuments, even that marking the grave of the sweet singer, John Howard Pavno, 1 to stand a moment oeneam me om i hickory tree thai marks the last resting place of the "Plumed Knight." ''Everybody wants ta see Blaino's grave," said Superintendent J. T. Motter. "I point it out and tell them about it till I get tired and worn out. It ia more visited than any grave in the I cemotery. I don't thiuk the body will over be moved. 1 am sure it was not his wish that it should, for when he solected ibafc lot {to pointed out the old treo and asked me to see that it was never destroyed, as lie wanted it for his j only monument." .
