[ The house was quickly filled with a dense I and blinding smoke, the cidor of which : left no room for doubt In the minds of all ?a robbery was being committed in the office of the house on the first lloor. Mr. Duval and family were on the upo?r flof?r. while David Poster was asleep on a cot In the dining room on the lower floor. The smoke was no blinding and suffocating that Footer was compelled to ascend to the upper floor. Duval tried to make his way to the office but while going down the stairway he was nearly overcome by the smoke and was compelled to re-treat to the upper floor. As soon as pomlble lie raised one of the window.* ai the front of the house, and In the dim light of the early morning nw several men?three or four ?leaving the -house and going toward Pulton. He secured his revolver and sent several shots after the robbers, but ' so far as he- know# hi? buih-t* did no execiftlon. As there wa* very little light it Is probable none of the robbers was Injured. After the retreat of the thieves. Duval, Poster and other occupants of the house began an Investigation, On entering the office from the dining room, it was discovered that before the explosion th* n>bber? had taken clever precautions to Insure them against belngdisturt?ed while at their work. Screw staples bad been tnmMi Into the door frame and then the door wu fastened by ropes attached to ! the knob and staples. This course wa? pursued at every door giving egress from the partaof the bouse occupied by Duval und his family. The rope that was us-**, in fastening the door between the dining ! room and office was broken almost as though a Sampson had been at work. : This was caused by the concussion following the explosion. In addition the explosion caused another damage. The door ot the safe was blown through the ' outside door of the office and sent thirty feet away into the road Hide. The sev, eral windows in the room were broken as well as others in other rooms of the house. 1 It was ascertained that the robbers secured $150, the amount of money Toll, keeper Duval had on hand Sunday night. Such a large amount of dynamite was used by the robbers that the money drawer tn the safe was wrecked and paper money destroyed, pieces of several notes being found near the safe. There was also several pieces of silver money on the floor which had been bent and blackened by the explosion. It is thought that the silver carried oft by the thieves is In a similar condition, but it may be that what they took away was in better shape, and that they threw away that which would have Incriminated them and | assisted in their detection and capture. It was learned that entrance had been effected through a 6ide window of the office. A diamond was used to remove - ? *'- """" ?'?o? ? fitvw irhlph f hA mi cmire fane vi uioiii*, .? inside fastening was easily worked. Sheriff Klchards who was early on the scene to Investigate the robbery, found plecea of the n?pe used to fasten th* doors and a piece of heavy black fuse that set off the dynamite, of which a heavy dose was administered to the safe, a small iron one not able to stand such a furious attack. Holes In the top and door of the safe admitted the dynamite, and then the fuse was lighted, after which the robbers are *uppo$ed to hav? retreated outside the office and atraited developments Kvldently they lost no time after the explosion. for within two or three minutes they were seen by Duval going along the pike toward Fulton. TTien ft was that he shot at them Chief Bennett was notified of the robbery and the day men ivere notified to . . look closely to uli suspicious characters. Three men whe had been seen coming in from out the pike were arrested by the chief's men. but (hey were found to be guiltless and allowed to g?>. Later In the ' morning. Officer MeCaiwland arrested five tough looking strangers, bu: as no t money was found on them and they appeared to have a straight story ao to their whereabout*, they, too. were re' leased. Sheriff Richards was nt work on the case during the day. but up to last 1 evening there had been no further devel' ooments. , Tlie Hrrlhovcii's Con Ctrl.
