MORE FRUITLESS CONFERENCE Held Between Keprcscntatlvcs of t] Company and Strikers, Togctlii With llcprcscutativo Business Mc of Wheeling ? The Company I) cllnes to Discharge any of ita Pr sent Employes?Strikers Would A< cept Eighteen Cents. The street ear Btrlke situation hi changed materially within the la three days, and it is now snid tin there Is little Hkelihood of a settlemei belli# effected between the Wheellr Railway company and the old employt now on strike. Since Saturday there have been se^ eral conferences between reprcsentath buslnn?c mon nf TUVinnllrx* n nrl rnnn sentatlves of the company and striker Messrs. Peterson, Stone and other loci directors represented the company, an Mr. Reeves, of the national board ( the Street Car Workers' union, and Set retary Thomas Salisbury, of the Trade Assembly, and some of the striker; union officials, appeared for the striker Mr. William Ellingham and other ger tlemen represented the business Intei ests of the city. Il Is learned that the conferences wet entirely fruitless, and a business ma who knew of the particulars stated t an Intelligencer reporter yesterday af! ernoon that the business people wh were responsible for this latest effoi to end the strike are now without hopi It is known that the strlleers' repr* sentatlves guaranteed to the buslnes people i nut me union would nccept j cents an hour and nine hours' worl with tho provision that the present nor union employes would be discharged. The company declined to accede t the latter proposition, refusing to dis churge any of its present employes t make places for the strikers. This dc cislon was arrived at after the loci directors, who own about 15 per cen of the stock, had communicated th facts to the outside directors, Messri Conderman and Moore. It is said thu the company holds that a settlemer such as is proposed by the etrlker ouuju nut ue a pci inuwem. unu, unu mil very likely there would be more troubl In the neur future, and they prefer t tight It out on the present lines, belle\ ing that a settlement, when reachei will be one of permanence. It Is learned that the business peop] Interested In the movement offered t raise a purse of $40 to $50 for each of th forty or fifty men now In the emplo of the company. In the event that the were discharged bv the company. It Is stuted that efforts are now beln made by certain business men to g< together In the near future and discus the situation. It is proposed by som to resume the use of the cars now tha the outlook for a settlement is practic ally nil. It Is contended that no oth? solution of the difficulty can be offeree and that sooner or later the street car must be patronized unless the buslnes of many retail merchants is to be lrre trievably damaged. METHODIST PROTESTANTS May Organize u Church Here Accord iug to Rev. Mr. Barnes. An Intelligencer reporter had an In terestlng conversation with Rev. I. A present there are seventy charges nm eighty ministers In the West Virgin! conference, with 17,000 membere. Th conference elects its own president fror year to year, and Mr. Barnes Is no\ serving. This year's conference will b held at Grafton In August. There is a probability that a Metho dlst Protestant church will be starte in Wheeling, said Rev. Mr. Barnes, fo the city has several members. Befor the war there was a congregation here he said, but U disbanded after th change of the boundary lines betweei Pittsburgh and the West Virginia con ferences, and under the boundary adopt crd a church In Wheeling would be un der Pittsburgh's Jurisdiction. Botl conferences will unite In starting j church here. The former congregatloi .? w?? .witu ^imi/uue .ill'mil but It %vas disposed of years ago.
