Last night New York showed more
symptoms of alarm over the rumors of
financial difficulties lu Londdn than
London Itself had done. This morning
the New York market gave about fifteen
minutes of active buying to overcome
the rather sharp declines in the
International stocks which had resulted
from the unsettled condition of affairs
in London growing outot the announcement
of actual failures resulting from
the gamble in west Australians and
their subsequent slump. The lower
prices here seemed an attraction In
themselves and the aggressively sustained
advance in St Paul on renewed
report^ of the entry of ,T. J, Hill into an
active share In the management of the
.company., ifnd of alliances with other
northwestern railroads was a stimulating,
l&fluencc throughout the whole list.
The buying of St. Paul itself was on a
very largo scale and the price rose to
147, leaving the previous record price
far.behind. The.market sold off a little
before the bank statement, but renewed
strength appeared oh the showing made
by tho banks, ;the expansion In loans
being mdro than provided for by the
increase In reserves of nearly $6,000,000,
which1 was considerably more than was
expected. The principal strength of the
market was In high grade railroad
stocks. The high "priced members, of
the' anthracite group werer conspicuous. I

market to-day? under the stimulus of
higher northwest receipts and stubborn
cables, May closing: lft@2c over yesterday.
Other markets rallied In sympathy,
corn closing oats ^(5Vic and
provisions 2#(&12Hc higher.
For two and one-half hours, the usual
duration of the Saturday session of
the board of trade, wheat displayed an
effervescent spirit, which was hailed
with dellghi by those who prosper proportionately
as the market la active.
During the first hour there was more
speculative business than during the
whole session of any other day this
week. The first symptoms of buoyancy
and strength brought back from the
alluring stock market many deserters
from the grain pit, and even added new
adherents. May wlioat opened unchanged
at 73V4c, but quickly responded
to buying orders from all sides of
the pit. Exporters wanted It, domestic
interests bid for It and shorts, who
were in the majority, clamored for it.
May advanced, growing more ncLlve as
It soared, until 75%c was bid. Over 74ci
offering were a hit freer, hut
they quickly cens'ed when the \
breadth of the demand was made
apparent, and not until the prion was
well over 75c did the selling pressure
assume sufficient weight to affect prices.

but here the clamor oC aborts was renewed,
and a recovery ensued, May

TjVic. The foundation of the market's
strength lay In the recent stubborn
firmness of foreign markets and. to a
greater degree, In the falling off In
northwestern receipts. The week's receipts
at Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago
aggregated 1.7S7 cars, 1,025 cars
less than the previous week, and 1,507
cars under the receipts at these points
the corresponding week a year ago.
To-day's receipts were 310 cars, against
040 cars last week, and 411 cars a year
ago. OC these Chicago reported 123
curs, eleven of which were contract
grade. These figures served as a basis
for the assertion that NorthwcsU-rn
receipts had at last entered upon a prolonged
reduction which would finally
substantiate the government report
that less than 85,000,000 bushels had been
raised in the three great spring wheat
states of the northwest. Primary receipts
were 445.000 bushels, compared
with 42G.OOO busholH p year ago. Exporters
reported twenty-llvo loads taken.
Seaboard clearances In wheat and llour
1 were oqual to 130,000 bushels.
Com was fairly-, active and firm, but
owed most of its strength to the substantial
rise In wheat. Moderate receipts,
349 cars here, small country offerings
