The seducer! Playing upon the most
sacred affections, he bctray3 innocence.?
IIow? By its noblest faculties; by its
trust; by its unsuspecting faith, by its ten
der love; by its honor. The victim, often
and often is not so much the accomplice as
the sufferer,betrayed by an exorcism which
bewitched her noblest affections to become
the suicide of her virtue 1 The betrayer,
for the most intense selfishness, without
one noble motive, without one pretense of
honor?by lies; by a devilish jugglery of
fraud; by blinding the eye, confusing the
conscience, misleading: the judgment, and
instilling the dew of sorcery upon every
flower of sweet affection?deliberately,
heartlessly damns the confiding victim!?
Is there one shade of good intention, one
glimmering trace of light ? Not one.?
There was not the most shadowy, tremu
lous intention of honor. It was a sheer,
premeditated, wholesale ruin, from begin- ;
ningto end. The accursed sorcerer opens I
the door of the world.' to push her forth, i
Site looks out all shuddering; fur there is j
shame and sharp-toothed hatred, and ;
chattering slander, and malignant envy, j
and triumphing jealousy, and old revenge j
?these are seen rising before her, clouds j

' she sees father and mother heartlessly !
I abandoning her, a brother's shame, a
i sister's anguish. It is a vision of deso- ;

j All is cheerless to the eye, and her ear !
| catches the sounds ofmourning, wails and 1
| laments; and far down, at the horizon of;

j lamb. Oh. my soul, I believe it not! What
sight is that? The drooping victim is
| worse than the destroyer! lie is fondled
' courted, passed from honor to honorandshe ;
iscrushedandtnangled under the infuriate j
tramp of public indignation! On her man- j
gled corpse they stand to put the laurels
on her murderer's brow! WhenI see such j
things as these. I thank God there is a j
judgemsnt, and there is a Hell.

Prof J. II. Ingraham, who now prefixes
"Reverend" to bis name, has lately been
contributing some sketches to the Augusta
(Gii.,) Field. In the course of them he
describes a visit to the grave of S. S. Pren
tiss, at Notches, Miss., and thus explains
the secret of the unhappy life of that rc
I markahle man:
Emerging from a romantic dell, we came
upon a high road which led us to a small
brick enclosed cemetery, half hidden by
shrubbery. We had inquired for Prentiss'
grave, and we were told we should find it
within this pleasant enclosure, wherein
three or four ancient looking, moss-grown
toombs were visible, half obscured by
vines. The iron gate was locked 1
climbed it, and making my way through
matted grass and tangled creepers, stood
before the upright slab of white marble
which marked the resting place of tlie
great orator. bared my head in the
presence of the mighty dead; for with all
his infirmities, Prentiss was the peer of
the greatest intellects of his age. Jus
tice has not yet been done to his noble
character. His errors arc always refcrra
ble to his physical infirmity. He was
lame?very lame, and had been so from
his birth. When he grew to boyhood,
sensitive, and talented, and ambitious, lie I
keenly felt his lameness, and wept over a \
deformity, which, in his own mind, degrad- |
ed him in the presence of his schoolmates.
Early he learned to taste the bitterness ,
of mi ambitions and lofty spirit feeling
physical inferiority, while lie was proudly ?
conscious of intellectual superiority.? !
When he became a man, his painful sensi- !
tiveness as to his lameness, led him to ex- i
elude himself from all female society.?
Under the crowd of his morbid feelings, ;
he fancied women scorived him. The barb
thus rankled ever in his heart. He did !
not known till long afterward, when a
lovely woman gave her heart and hand, !
that a true woman is interested more by
the splendor of mind in man, than symme- j
try of person; that beautiful women look
rather to the intellect and are dazzled by
it, no matter how plain the casket.
For thirteen years of his earlier man- i
hood he refused introduction to ladies. ? !
Such was the sensitiveness, of this proud
nature. He well knew his own intellectual
powers, and knowing them, he despised j
more and more his infirm body, and be
lieved that all others did. Yet his face
was wonderfully handsome. His head was :
large, and noble and grand in outline.?
His smile was beautiful. His powers of j
conversation were imperial and unap- 1
proaehable. Vet consciously feeding upon
his own morbid emotions he despised him
self. He felt (like aouio uiigim augel in
chains) bound to u body thai lacked tbc
full and perfect impress of mind. This
one unendurable idea was never absent
from him. Once an injudicious friend, in
discreet with wine, said:
"Prentiss, what made you lame?''
Mr. Prentiss turned upon him :i wither
ing look of scorn, hatred and contempt,
und answered in a hoar-c and terrible
whisper, before which the otliT trembled:
"Go*s curse, sir.'"
Then turning his back upon him, with
a lip tremulous from unfathomable feeling,
he covered his face with his hands, and
hastening to his chamber, cast himself
upon his bed in a paroxysm of bitter weep
ing. Who could not pity such a man ??
Who shall wonder, Oh uncbarinble Phar
isee, that he sought relief at the gamiug
board, staking the thousands recklessly
upon a card, or in the intoxication of the
wine cup? He gambled not for money, he
drank not for the love of strong drink;
but to escape the pressure of damning
thought. The sight of this infirm limb at
times would drive this proud man to fierce
despair. What cared he for the sots who
flocked around him and drank at his ex
pense? They were his tools. He made
use of them to help him drown reflection.
They drank for sensual thirst of drink; he
to quench the fires of thought. He de
spised them. Not one dared take a famil
iarity with him. He who spoke to him
lightly of his lameness was unforgiveti by
him forevermore.
Who will fling the stone? Who will
condemn? Who can judge him, who
was never in his place? What mind tan
conceive of the intellectual and moral
torture of this proud, brilliant genius,
going through life, hating hi? own form,
and shunning for vear3, God's greatest
and best gift to man, from a sense of self
degradation in woman's presence?
No, justice has not yet been done to
this great and wonderful man. lie was
not understood but by a few of his nearest
friends?never by his boon companions.
They fancied he was such a one as them
selves, when he towered above them like
a prince, and despised them like a god.
Ilis own brother, who wiote his life in
two volumes, did not at all comprehend
his true character, and has unawares left a
false and unjust impression of him upon
the minds of his readers.
Even the grave lifts its voice in echo of
the vulgar opinion which classes him
with ordinary inebriates and reckless
gamesters. It was with pain 1 read the
inscription upon the headstone; it is with
pain 1 copy it. I give it below :

ish and weak would hesitate to procure
