As the writer romarks, it is si "plain," easy going letter, natural and interesting: Niagara Falls, July 10th. 18G0. Dear Brother:?Having accomplished so much of my journey in safety, from this place of the "thunder of waters," I will proceed to relate, according to promise, the incidents of my trip, and attempt, as well as I can, a description of this won der of nature. And as yon know me to be a plain matter-of-fact-man, you will not expect me to forget my own identity and yield to that grandiloquent style which characterizes most of the produc tions which eminate from this place. I could not ape. their style if I would, and I would not if I could. So you must bear with my plain and unornate language, and perhaps you will learn as much about the Falls as if you read a half do/.en of those wild, half crazy and half poetic produc- j tions which (ill the columns of newspa pers. To begin, then: left Wheeling July 17th. and after a detention at .Mingo and Wellsville of some three hours, arrived without accident at Cleveland quarter be fore nine, almost suffocated with dust and overcome with heat. As the evening is calm and beautiful, and a cool, refreshing breeze blowing from the lake, we conclude to take passage on the steamer "City of Buffalo,'* for the place after which the vessel is named. Accordingly, by nine o'clock we find ourselves and baggage on board. After supper we wend our way to the hurricane deck, and after watching the lights along the shore gradually disappear in the increasing gloom, our attention is directed to the. most brilliant one of all ? the light house above tiie harbor of Cleveland?and we gaze on it until it fades away in impenetrable darkness; and then feeling we are fairly embarked on the lake, wo retire to our room to rest ns com fortably possible, considering the din and confusion below, caused by some fifty head of cattle stowed too close for keeping, and which, consequently, keep goring eu.ch other and bellowing all uight, greatly to our discomfot t. At half past four in the morning we arc up and on deck to get the cool, refreshing breeze, and to gaze on the beautiful lake. Away in the distance, in every direction, we see vessels of every dimension, from the fisherman's smack up to the magnifi cent steamer, looming up on all parts of the horizon and flying to all parts of the cotnpiss. From the green waters of the lake arises a bluish haze, castinga mourn ful shade over the projecting points of land seen far off in the distance on either hand, and reminding one of the far off land en veloped in a deeper gloom, than that which hangs over these fairy isles. The weary and dnsty traveler cannot hut find it a relief, after having been confined in one position all day in a crowded car, to find himself on boarl of a vessel, with ample accommodations of the first quality, and associated with officers whose gentle manly deportment secure his respect, and make him feel perfectly at home, and we would therefore advise nil who visit N iag ara, or whose route leads them through Western New York, when they arrive at Clevlaud, to take the packet?if..,the even ing is calm and clear?instead of the cars. But, please pardon this slight deviation and we will proceed. ? Fortunately the morning was clear, and with the help of smoked and stained glass we had a tolerably fair view of the Solar Eclipse, which, we are told, is not to occur again in the same form for so many thous and years, and while we gaze on the dark ened sun we cannot but ask the question. inhere will we be when it occurs again. Arrived at Buffalo half past seven. And for the same reason we say nothing about Cleveland?not having time to look around ?we will also pass it by with the single observation, that it has the appearance of a flourishing city, well adorned with Churches and manufactories, and from the apparreut business done on the levy, would inter it has all the marks of prosperity and life. Safely landed, with carpet sack in hand, we start for the cars; but do not run over h drayman or knock down an omnibus driver, both of which, it will occur to us, ought to have been done by some body, for their intolerable impertinence. How ever, after a few hours ride, we are safely ly landed at the town of Niagara, and exchangingomnibusses and hacks we make at once for the FalU and bring up at the lower end of the same, on the Aineri can sick-, which commands a tolerably fair j view of the entire Falls on both sides of , Gaul Island. ] The impression on beholding this stu- j pendens work of nature for the first time, j is indiscrihable. It so far surpasses till our previous conceptions of sublime grr.il deur, that when we would give utterance to our deep emotions our thoughts nrc be wildered and our most g'owing concep tions appear tame and insipid. While you gaze ?>n the mighty cataract and listen to the deafening roar of Niagara, .vhich has continued for ages past and will fcist^until time is no more; when yon reflect that all the waters of the Great Xorth-West do here congregate and are now plunging into the boiling abyss beneath your feet, and that this great wonder of nature is so far sttpe j rior to anything the most lofty genius of j man could ever conceive, ninth less ac complish: and that Niagara with its world | wide renown, is not as much in the sight of Him who holds the sea in the hollow of ; his hand and who takes up the Isles as a \ very little thing, as the little rill dropping j over a pebble stone, is to man. the pious i mind feds, if it utters it not. "Great is the 1 Lord of Hosts and great is His mighty ; power." As it is impossible to describe in j language, the emotions caused by this, one of nature's greatest wonders, just fol low us and we will try and describe all we see. First then, we iind ourselves at the ferry house, a substantial stone bnilding, situated about 25 yards from the falls be ing connected with it a railroad on an in clined plane, moved by water power, for the purpose, in consideration of 5 cents, of letting us down to, or bringing us up from, the waters edge. Once down on a rocky uneven shore, we approach as near the cataract as the blinding spray and a proper regard for our good clothes, will allow, and after sufficiently contemplating the masses of water as the}- tumble down from their lofty height into the boiling cauldron at our feet, we oncejmore turn our steps to the railroad for a more elevated position; niul if we preferred the 291 steps going flown, we did now cheerfully pay 5 cents to get drawn up. Justus we arrive at the top we hear the whistle of the little ".Maid of the Mist," whose moorings are just opposite, indicating that she is about to leave with her load of passengers, lor a more immediate proximity with the fails. She passes over to the American side and runs within fifty yards of the falls?no great adventure?but as we gaze on her until she begins to leap and plunge and reel in the boiling waters of Horse Shoe Falls, we think we can hear above the cataract's din, a female shriek, and we stand in breathless silence and only feel relieved when she turns her prow down stream and leaves a scene of so much appa rent danger. Having seen all we can see, from this point of view, we direct our steps up the | river side to the bridge leading on to Goae | Island. Seeinir no toll gate uor toll col lector, we take it for granted, it is a fret bridge; but such thoughts are entirely too liberal for Yankee ingenuity, and docs their peculiar faculty of acquisativeness great injustice. At the far end, some twenty yards from the bridge, is a sign stretched across the road, with the oraini ous inscription in large letters, "25 cents Foil CKOSSIXU AND UB-CR0SS1KG THIS BUI DOB." Ashamed now to retreat, and willing to pay double the amount, rather than be disappointed in the main object of our visit, you step in, register your name, and pay your 25 cents; and so your ex pectationsof getting something for nothing vanish, as the mist of the mountain is dissipated before the rising sun Arrived on the island containing about 70 acres of ground, you cannot but ad mire the wild woodland scene. The trees | are standing just as the hand of nature planted them, and as they havo stood for centuries, listening to the constant din of Niagara?except where the hand of some vandal visitor, ambitious to let subsequent ! visitors know he had seen Niagara, and to j get himself a name he could not get any I other way, has cut and carved most of the j beech trees to their destruction. If any ! improvement could be suggested it would 1 be the clearing out of some of the dead ; fallen timber, which abounds in profusion j ?but even this adds to the naturalness of i the scenery, and corresponds very well I with ulfarouud.
