'bat tbe ,''lnbIeni of our lib- : ?hlePb have taken'oHc" ^ tbe eTeata ' was submitted to the people, who voted it down by a majority of *64,000. Then another special session was called, and. in secret session, the people of East Tennes see were soi l like sheep in the shambles to the Southern Confederacy. While the offi cers <?f that Confederacy knew about ull that \vh3 going on, my people were not suf fered to put an ear to the keyhole, or peep through a crevice, while they were being transferred to tbtf Southern Confederacy. Only a little more than thirty days were allowed in which to ratify or reject the or dinance of secession. Fifty-fire hundred thousand dollars were voted the Governor by which to arm men, who should overawe nnd intimidate the Union men. Even a slave ban usually the privileges of selecting his master, but here are we, the people of a sovereign State, sold without haviug a voice in the choice of a master. By the same bill three thousand officers were cre ated and distributed over the State to overawe nnl intimidate the Union votes. Thus domineered, hectored, and hrow beaten, a very large proportion of the Union men were kept from the poll? ; yet with all tlis over thirty counties in East Tennessee where we had an opportunity to canvas*, gave a majority of from 20,000 to 25.000 against secession. My own county giving a majority of 2,007 against it. We of East Tcnnetsie are still resolved to stavd by | tke State and the I'mori. Jf an earih/juake or a tornado should atceep thg other portion o f the $tn1+from ir^rtf E*i*t Tennet?e* should f ill clam lo be tin Slate, aud w.il ! make the same claim should the same re sult be obtained by any other cause. All that we ask is that there shall be n?i inva sion from the Sonth or from any other por tions of the State.- We . ask that wo have mean5 to defend otlcselves. onder that clause of the Constitt&ion which provides that every citizen shsll have the right lo keep and bear aruts. We have asked the Governor for our fair proportion cf those i arms which were distributed lor the pro tection of the State, and have been an ; swered that we shall have them, provided we will form into companies and brigades, to be transferred to Jeff. Davis and the Southern Confederacy. We tcill form no ' such companies ; ice tcill receive no arms on these conditions. We will appeal to the Gen ' tral Government for aid, and beini protid-d tcith armt, ve tcill protect and defend ou 1 hornet, our fireiidet. and cur Government ifrom all invasion. i" We have been taunted?toll that we were traitors?that the hemp was growing fov U3?that the dny of our execution was 1 fixed. We have stood all this, and more, I face to face, to; to toe, and answered that the Constitution defines treason to be adher \jr.y to the encmiet of the United States, and \ gii-iny them aid and amfort; and we have told them that th> time* will cotne when the Judiciary will "decide according to the law, and tlien we will see for whom the ! day of execution i* fixed, and for whose 1 neck the hemp is growing. The Stars and Stripes should be preserv 1 ed, if for nothing else,as a memento: as an emblem of the best and purest Govern ment upon which the sun ever shone. And I invoke the bitterest curses upon the 1 head of him who would trail it in the dust. I know that rewards have been offered for my head, and that it is even said that war rants have been issued lor Etheridge, lay self, an J other Union men. lint, my friends. I am no fugitive, ranch less am I a fugitive from justice. I r.m not flvins from my home. I am oil my xcay to execute u holy mission. I am willing to place every par licle erf property I possess, nt the disposal of the Government, if she needs it, in tltis strife, and if ibis is not enough. I am wil ling to pour out iny life blood a libation on the altar of my country. If I fall in this strife, all I ask is, that my corpse shall be carried to uiv home in Tennessee, trap ped in the Stars and Stripes, and that 1 sht?H be buried among her mountains.? And it the Uuion should fall with me, all that I ask is, that, wrapped in the rt tg which is her emblem, I shall be buried in the sime common grave. I ask no greater glory. ; [From llic N. Y. Post.") More Mn?kcd ltatierlec. Our armies have twice, within the course of a few weeks, suffered severely trom the ambuscades which the enemy has prepared for them, and into which we have incau tiously entered. But a more tremendous trap than that at Great Bethel or at V ien na has been devised for us, and is even now being silently equipped and manned. We refer to those schemes of compromise with the secessionists which are to be sprang upon Congress at the special ses sio ? in July. Mr. Crittenden, who has just been ed from Kent tick jw announces his deter mination to make some motion for bring ing the war to an end. He wsll he sus tained by other Southern members, and l.y some, wo fear, iron the Northern States. Already a convention of editors is called tn this State, to agree upon a plan it is said, for bringing popular opin ion up to the designs of the leaders, and not a l>w hints are given out in private conversation, to the clfect that the war has gone far enough. A part ot the scheme embraces the capitalists of the cities, who are to bo persuaded not to lend their mou ev to the government for the prosecution of hostilities, or to lend it only at sueh rates of interest as will discourage the government in its attempts to maintain the federal ascendancy. This scheme is nothing more tlun ft masked battcrj* of Jefferson Davis. He has been thoroughly disappointed in hts projects. Supposing that a large party at the North would side with him in his in famous designs, he really persuaded bi.? self that it would be anta<y thing to march on to Washington, seize the public offices and archives, and inaugurate a new ad ministration. But the noble and unani mous uprising -of the tree Suites put ail end to his vain and ridiculous hopes, lie found that the' wicked war he had begun was to be h war in earnest, lie saw* that the people of theXorth were not only uni ted in their resolves to preserve the Unio.i, but that they brought to the contest a vast superiority of wealth, numbers, determina tion and endurance. Instead of bei-ig in the possession of the capital, be can scarce ly hold the securest military positions by his half-fed. ill-clad and discontented forces. His ports are blockaded, his supplies are cut off, the border Stales do not follow nis lead, and ft qu irter of a million of men threaten all his posts. In short, Davis is in ft hopeless predira nvnt. -V grand success in battle might impart sjtne degree of vitality to his cause for a short time, bat the end is as certain as the setting of the sun to-night Ho and his followers inu3t he scattered like chaff before the wind; if not Ibjs summer, ytten j in ilie autumn. He percerrejHiis oilultw, > and adroitly contrives a way to escape. Tt is todlvidfe the Xorth.by a well-planned stratagem.' Knowing 'the love of p-ace wT.Icli pervades the heart* of northern men, he hopes, by throwing into Congress soma scheme of compromise, to divert attention from the vigorous prosecution of the war, and In the end to raise a party of peace even in the midst of our camps. We do not believe that the project will succeed. Our pedple, who have deliber ately gone into the contest, will not relin quish it until tlie ends for which it was undertaken have been fully att iincd. Wc did not lissome the dread alternative of battle as child's play. It was uot to us a | mere move in a great game of politics and I intrigue. We have not sent two hundred thousand men from their homes to perish [of exposure and disease on a tool's errand: j we have not raised m'.lions of money, and i sacrificed many millions more in trade, i for nothing. We bare been earnest in our I purpose to vindicate great principles, and I those principles will be vindicated, come j what may. Mr. Crittenden and bi3 small ! knot of adherents may suggest what com ? promise they please, but until the sttprem ' acv of the Federal Government is recog 5 nixed from the Potom ic to the Rio Grande, ; until 'he Stars and Stripes Host again front ievervfortres3 within our boundaries, until i the "armies of rebellion have laid dawn _ 1 their last musket and the leaders of reuel 1 liou have paid the la.t peu.illy lor foment ing the most wanton and malignant crime [that our country ever witnessed, the de I maud and wishes of the people af the North J | will not be satisfied. They have had ! enough of treason in this single experience ' of it, and lb ay mean that it shall never j again show auv one of its heads. They ? i mean to make an end of the hydra once | | and for ever. Now i? the time to do it: ' we have lost nearly all that we can lose in the experiment; the heart of the nation is alive ; the spirit, of patriotism is fully . aroused; our soldiers are in the field; and , there inust be no faltering till the glorious 1 banner of the Uuiou waxes triumphantly J in all the land !
