TLevlook more like hat-racks than they | -j like horses. Tney will never be worth more than two days service in Western Virginia, and it is our opinion that the j moii?y paid for them is thrown away. j In this connection we may mention a : "are instance of patriotism and true hones- I i tr. Sir: I have the honor to inform you that the rebel armed steamer Planter was brought out to us ibis morning from Charleston, by eight contrabands, and de livereed to tbe squadron. Five colored women and three children art* also on board, and four large puns which she was engaged in transporting. I send her to Port Rural at once, in ordet to take aiv do tage of the psesent good weather. I send Cbarlesion papers of the 12th, and the eery intelligent contraband who was in charge will give von the information which be has brought off. 1 have the honor to request that yo? will send back, as soon as convenient, the offi cer and crew sent on board. Commodore Dupott, in forwarding this Dispatch sots, io relation to the rebel steamer Planter : Sbe was tbe armed Dis patch and transportation steamer atttstched ! to the engineer tieparixnent at Charleston, < under Brigadier-Gen. Ripley, wbose bark, a short time since, was brought out to the blockading fleet by several contrabmnds. The bringing out of this steamer, under all the circumstances, would have done credit; to aay one. At four o'clock in the morn- , ing, in the absence of the Captain, who was on* shore, sbe left her wharf, close to the government office and head-quarters, with the Palmetto and Confederate flags flying, passing the successive furts, and saluting as urual by blowing her steam whistle.? After getting beyond the range of the last gun, abe quickly hauled down the rebel ! flags and hoisted a white one. The On- ' ward was the inside ship of the blockading fleet in the main channel, and was prepar ing to Are when her commander made out the white flag. The armament of the steamer is a 32 pounder or pivot, and a line 24-pounder buwitxer. Sbe has besides on her deck, , four other guns, one a 7 inch rifled, which were to be taken to ibe new tort on the middle ground. One of the four belonged to Fort Sumter, and had bt-eu struck :u the rebel attack on the fort on the muzzle. Robert, the intelligent slave and pilot of the boat, who performed this bold feat so skillfully, informed me of this fact, pre suming it would be a matter of interest to us to have possesion of this gan. This man. Robert Small, is Fuperior to any who have come into our iineR. Intelligent as marir of tbeia have been, his information has t?eec most interesting, and portions of it of the utmost importance. The steamer is quite a valuable acquisi tion to the squadron by her good macbin erv and very light draught. The officers in charge brought her tbrougb St. flelena soccd, and by the inland passage down Beaufort river, arriving here at 10 o'clock la*t nichL On board the steamer when she Wft Charleston were S men. 5 women and 3 children. 1 shall continue to employ Robert as pilot on board the Planter for in land water?, with which be appears Ttry familiar. T do not know whether in the views of the Government the vessel will be considered a prize, but if so 1 respectful ?v submit to the Department the claims of the man Robert Small and his associates.
