failg guigtUgmm Monday Morning, July 20.J863 Cuy Poi^? yr- ? ?We learn from a member of Carlin'a batlery, who has just^ returned from Rlchtnond that Lieutenant Lawaon, of Rowaud'a Cavalry, wbo desert ed his company some six. weeks ago and went within the rebel line*, lately poisoned himself, at Castle Thunder, Richmond.-^ Seven thousand dollars in money was foufld upon his person, four thousand in gold an^ tho balance in greenbacks. There is something very remarkable and mysterious about the career of Lawson.? Ilia Graf appearance here was as an Order ly Sergeant in the Brat Virginia three months volunteers, io which position he earned for himself the reputation of a brave and efficient officer. When the regiment was disbanded, after tho expiration of its term of service, Lawson, in company with Capt. Wei. Rowftnd, raised a cavalry oom pany of which be w?? elected first Lieuten ant With this company he performed a great deal of arduous and dangerous sor vice, and he took pride in asserting that he nover took any prisoners. Ho it said to have kilted several rebels who were sup posed, by him, to have tried to get away, alter being captured. It is stated that af ter the oompany went to Winchester, Law son got lo drinking pretty freely and be camo very much attached to arobel Woman, wbo It it supposed iodnctd him to desert; Upon entering the rebel l.lnea and pro claiming himself a deserter lie was arrested by the rebels upon the charge of murder aud taken to Castle Thnnder, bis represen tation for severity in dealing with onr mis guided Southern brethren having preceeded him into tlieland of Uiiie. Lawsonclaimed to be a native of New York state, and said bo bad served five years in the regular army before the breaking out of the war. About three weeks ago Chris. Schwodes, saloon keeper on Union street, lost ten dollars from bis money drawer. A little girl who was in the saloon at the lime saw a girl enter the place and get the money but the thief was gone before no'.ice could be given of her presence. On Saturday morning the little girl saw the thief in the street and officer Scroggins was put upon her track. Upon following her up the officer was very much surprised to encounter' the faeo of the Goldsborough girl, who has now grown into a good sined young woman. At first she denied tho theft but upon being press ed closely by the officer she admitted it.? She then confessed that since leaving here alio bad been living at Fredericksburg, on lilt) Pittsburg and Fort Wayue Railroad, aud the money she had stolen she bad used to pay hor fare to that point. Shu SaW she had no knowlepge whatever of her pa rents, who left bere some years ago. At tho lime of the girl's arrest she had with her a little brother not more than seven years of age. This brother has been liv ing with a family In Belmont county who have undertaken to raise him, but on Car oline's arrival, the other day, sho went over and stole him intentlng to take him along with her and made an expert thief ol him. The ehild was sent home and tho girl was committed to jail. _ Co*KOi?P Tbutoh.?For several days an honest Uerinan has had charge of a lot of fifty horses, which were purchased tor the Government and are corralled in a field some seven or eight miles from the city. In view of the practico of horse steal ing which now prevails, the German was instructed by bis employer to count the horses every nigbt and morning. The work or counting was accordingly successfully and satisfactorily performed, and all weui on well until a few evenings since, when tho German, being somewhat tired, mount ed one of the horses and rode about the field to count the rest. Much to his sur prise he coulea lii'd bnt forty nine. Being greatly alarmed, ho rodd to the city the sumo night and woke up his employer, in forming him that one of the hows had been stolen. The employer mounted a horse and in company with the faithful German repaired to ihe field, and the count was again gone over. This lime there ap peared to be fifty horses all ol which were doing well. Tbe German had forgotten to count the horse upon which he was riding I (^Wbhi-iho Battbbt Bova.?About a doxen of the members of Carlin'a hallery, wbo were captured at Wiocbeste rand ta ken to Richmond, returned on Saturday from Annapolis, Md. 'Another Runaway.?On Saturday afternoon a large, powerful horse; started from somewhere in East Wheeling and ran away with an empty dray. Unlike most horses who have taken runs lately, the an imal in question, Apparently with a wige precaution, kept out of the street and took to the alleys, several of which he traveled through at a very rapid rate, until he was brought suddenly to a halt by a fall. At the samo time the dray was upset, and the horse breaking away from tbo incumb rance, continued to ruu until he was caught by some men who Scared him with chairs and brooms.
