?he gnitUigtnttv* From Washington. An InutaiUDf Lill?r-F?oll Mil In oldenta of tbe Lut W?k. Washimgtqn, April 23,1865. TBI PKOPLl'S LOVE FOE MB. LIHOOLE. Mr. Lincoln w?a personally known to a larpe number of persons here, and all who had met bim loved him. It is surprising that his murder should affect stout-hearted men as It does. Men unused to tears begin to talk of the dead and break down; voice fails them and hot tears gush forth. Men arc eick at heart and go abont the atreeta with long faces and sunken ejee. No se cessionist dares to smile on the street. The fact is that Washington has been on the verpe of a riot ever since Fridaj night. A wcrd from any one occupying a high po sition would have consigned half the build ings belonging to aeceaaionieta to flimti. If the people generally knew at this mo ment all the facts in the hands of the au thorities, there are sereral buildinga that would be dtatroyed. Thank heaven, order has beep preserved. A prominent and ex perienced detective, who has spent some time at Ford's theatre examining the box and all the incidents connected with the assassination, says that it is impossible thai all the employes of the theater should be innocent. Some of them muBt have been .aware of Booth's intentions. I sup l>oe?fnat the government is of tbisoplniooL for it has arrested Fotd (the treasurer of the theater) and some other persons con nected with it. HOW TBI WASHINGTON 8KCB8B FBB&. I I ave no doubt that nearly all the Washington secessionists look upon the act committed by Booth with horror, but there are some who approve it and secretly re joice over it. There are some who would conceal Booth, if they could with safety to their own necks. There is a young lady here belonging to a biqh southern family, who made ibe subjoined remark: "I would like to see the streets of Washington ankle deep with Yankee blood, and to accom plish it 1 would give the lives of my father and two brothers?all I can give!" What is each a woman made of? Hell itself can contain nothing worse. Yet this fiend is supposed to be a woman, and a lady!? There are more like her here?she-devils 1 call them?southern ladies they call themselves. It is time that such people felt the terrors of the law. Mr. Lincoln had one fault?be was too lenient with traitorB.? They could coax almost anything out of him. Men like Booth were as safe here as in Richmond; yet it was everywhere known I that they were rebels, scheming and plot-' tine against the government Mr. Johnson will put an end to this, fie will punish traitors and pardon penitents. THB ANIMUS OF THB ASSASSINS. The animus of Booth is evident. It is a mistake to suppose that he hated Mr. Lin coln or Mr. 8eward?that is, any more; than be hated other prominent republicans. The hatred of Butler in secession circles is intense. Why did they not kill him ? The object was toetrike a blow at the govern ment of the United States. There was hope of precipitating anarchy on the oountry ac d if ibie failed, at least to terrify and shock the people of the free states. The blow was struck at the North, and not at an individnal. This is the opinion of some of the beBt men connected wiih the govern ment. Booth and his fellow wretches meant to kill Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Seward, and perhaps Mr. Stanton. If Gen. Grant had been in the box of the theater, be too would doubtless have fallen a victim. The idea of these scoundrels doubtless is to stagger the government, if not destroy it, and to punish the North in the hour of its triumph. They, however, omitted several very important things. They did not kill Mr. Jobosoo, and to have made the bideousjob complete, Mr. Foster of Connecticut should have been included in tbe list of the killed, as he would have become President if Mr. Johnson had also been assassinated. WHAT HAS BKKN GAINED. What has Booth gained by hia murder? For bis cause quick destruction, for him self the detestation of mankind, and pun ishment if he i9 taken. Tbe new admin istration will pursure a stern policy toward tho leading rebels. I havn't a doubt of this. It is consonant with Mr. Johnson's character. He is a vigorous, brave, bold man. He will push the Louisiana policy, very likely, giving to the loyal people of the Southern StateB tbe right or privilege of governing those States. But he will oppose the granting of the elective fran chise to prominent rebels, and I doubt not will support the proposition to extend the suffrsge to the colored people of the South. When I speak of favoring or opposing certain things in the States, of oourae I mean that be will use bis influence in that direction. I have conversed with several gentlemen who have had interviewa with the new President within a day or two, and their concurrent testimony is that Mr. John son conducts himself admirably. He is not elated or confuBed by his sudden elevation to power, nor is he to be humbugged out of bis own views of tbe rebellion. He was urged Monday to treat the rebela merciful ly, and he replied quiokly: '?Mercy to in dividuals ia not always mercy to the State. llfBBUU to ?? ??? ?. - i -? ouvw ? ? u. punished!" Andy Johnson will punish it without a doubt. It is probable ^that hia policy will be more severe than Mr. Lin coln's was. and if it Is, tfje events of the last we^ will justify great severity on hia part There is one thing to be deprecated, p-id that Is division in the republican ranks. For the very reason that it waa wise to stand by Mr. Lincoln when he wasnotfun damentally wrong, (and he rarely waa. If ever), it ia now judicious and indeed a duty to stand firmly by Mr. Johnson. Let re publicans and anti-slavery men rally round bim, not slavishly, not fearing to critixise his acta in a wholesome manner, but after all as friends not aa enemiea. I have no fears that the Blaira or the Sewards will carry bim out of his way.? He is by nature a radical and it may do him no barm to have a counsellor who ia conservative. Van. ISTew Goods.
