Ttie Women of Venice In 1864* Venice of old we are til familiar with. Tbe Veoice of the present day is sometbirg new to us. A capital description of tbe women, however, as you see them in Veoice now, is thai girea by a late wri ter: In tbe magnificent court of the palace of the Dogea there are two antique fountains cf massive bronze, adorned wilh renowned sculptures and rtpowit work. Round theee fountains pressed crowds of women; some drew water, while others stood wait ing behind them, and formed exquisite groups. These women come hither daily at tbe same hour. The water is drawn io a copper or wooden bucket fastened to a rope. Tbo bronze rim has been worn at Several places by .the rope. I never before aaw so many women so quiet. They are so silent, active and timid in their movo ments and work, that it might bo fancied tbe Doge still resided iu the palace. When . they have finished, tbey put the yoke on their shoulders and start off at a smart trot. Their occopation of supplying every bouto with water is a laborious one These bard-working and sturdy wo. men are not Venetians, but come from the mountains of Tivoli, whose enow-clad peaks are seen rising high io the air. Tbey come in troops to Venice, where tfcey are called bijolauti, from tbe yoke they bear on their shoulders. Tbey all live in tbe poorest districts of tbe city, la winter they wear a abort woollen jtcket, and a green or dark blue skirt with a red border ing. On their heads tbey have a round hat of felt or.coarse straw, which is coquettish ly arranged over tbo left ear, and allows the peculiar ornamentation of the back hair to be seen. These ornaments consist of large steel cr silver pins, so arranged as to resemble a coronet. The size and ma terial of these pios vary according to tbe savings of the women, for they constitute their entire fortune. On the strength of ? beso pios tbey marry, but not in Venice; for no Tivolese woman, however rich or beautiful, could find a husband there. Tbe old law, which fotbida marriage with a foreign woman, still lives in the minds of the people. Ou St. Mark's Square the original blend ing cf town and couotry, which Is seen in otter Italian cities, is not perceptible. One does not even notice tho mixture of the social classes, which in large Europe an cities is seen in tbe variety of costume, manners and language. No workmen, no shirt-sleeves, no rags are to be seen. A few beggars croucb iu a remote earner or behind a column; snme barefooted and bareheaded children run after the stranger along the pavement of the Procnratio; but even the deepest poverty looks here like decadence, and feels ashamed. The man iB careless, and. recognizing the useless ncss of any exertion, indulges in a haughty Jar niente. This carelessness, this want of moral courage, is everywhere expressed io the streets, on the squares, in the palaces tho bouses, tbe offices, and even in the chambers of the poor. People get up late and go to bed late; when the toil of dress ing or undressing has been accomplished w>pl. desire to derive the greatest possi ble advantage from it. On. .id. cf St. Mark's Square belongs exclusively to the Austrian officers. Tbey are avoided, and persona pretend cot to nonce their preseDce. On tbe other side there is a crowd of ladies, in long black silk dresses and floating veils. Many of them wear tbe round Hungarian hat, with a pigeon's wing as ornament. Neither tho dress nor the hat, the regularity of feator. nor lustre of the eye, allow their rank to be recogo:zed. You must look at their neck and count how many rows the gold chain, which every lady wears, forms. But who could count the fine and delicate rows of a Venetian chain? Easier and equally cer tain m?rka arc the length of th. ohaio, and the knot formed with it at the waist?for tbe wealthiest lady makes the largest knot All theso women are beautiful, howover : and two typeB of feminine beauty, formine a striking contrast, can be noticed. Manv Venetian women are daughters of the night, and their ambcr-huod complexion imparts-to tbim a pallid shimmer, like n dagger Ifade in tho moonlight. The others are daughters of tho dawn, resemblins rcses thfet have bourgeoned in tbo full nlow of the sun, images of tho fullest and richesl life. These two types of beauty must bt seen in order to understand all the picturei and adventures of Vecl:e. Bellini, Ocor gtene, Tintoretto, and Carpaccio preferred Ibe first type; Titian and Veronese the second. When rich models are had, colot muBt hear away tho victory, and drawina could never allow such perfection as in Florence and Rome. Tho Venetians art said to have been tbe lovelieBt, most ten der, and most passionate of all women. In the names of Deedemona, Anna Erizzo Bianco Collalto, Bianca Capello, La Gritti' and many others, whom poetry has made it?own. these passions are written In let tets of blood and flame. Tho splendid festivals of Venice are nc longer kept up. Some disappeared soon taneously with tbe revolution; others have been prohibited by Austria, because Ihev aroused dangerous reminiscsnccs; and ir those still existing no one feels the slieht. est interest. But festivals, theatres, con certs, regattas, fireworks and illuminations bava been banished, because tbo countrv m9"rn'ng the national temper. In Na. pies, Palermo, Rome and Florence a hot dry atmosphere is breathed. In Venice n? storms, and the air is so pure rinni , Il,B along like an un it. mitt ,"T have its maid servant. In this respect tho Ve animated by a true Spanish pride, they caonot wait on anybody, not Man ThB Han woman has ber maid to light a fire ? hough there may be na wood, and hane the pot over the game, though there ma? be no meat in it.
