The Democracy of Maine represented in State Convention ou Wednesday last, put forth a declaration of principles the fnll text of which is as follows : Renolvod, That with sentiments of pro found gratitude to Almighty God we re joice that the clash of arms is no longer heard in our land, and that the extermi nating horror of war has ceased, and that peace, with its grateful and healing in fluence, pervades our border. Resolved , As within the scope of sound constitutional principles and to re-estab lish at the earliest practicable period, it is the duty of the Federal Government, acting with as little executive and legis lative interference as possible, to observe the true constitutional relations between itself and the revolted States, and to cx ecnto all legitimate power and influence to promote and perpetuate that univer sal harmony, fraternity and unity which are essential to the peace, happiness and glory of the republic, now destined to be ? one aud indivisible," forever. Resolved, That the Democracy of Maine do here reassert aud declare their funda mental principles of actiou to be equal aud exact justice to all men of whatever State or persuasion, religious or political; peace, commerce ami honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none; the support of the State gov ernments in all their lights, as the most competent administration of all our do mestic concerns aud the honest bulwark agaiust ant i republican tendencies; the preservation of the General Government in its whole constitutional vigor as the sheet anchor of our peace at home and our safety abroad; a jealous eare of the right of election by the people, a mild and safe correction of abuses which are left by the sword of revolution, where peace able remedies are unprovided absolute acquie.'-cences in the decisions of the ma jority ? the vital principles of republics, from which there ii no appeal but t.? f.ii ee ? t In* v i t al pi in ci pie and immediate parent of despotism; a well fliseiplined militia, out b?_st reliance in peace and in the first moment 01 war; the supremacy of the civil over l be military authority Resolved, That the ballot ia the right of every American citizen, to be restrict ed only* by limitations, as the public safe ty may require, aud that the Constitu tion recognizes the right of the people of each Stateto prescribe the qualifica tions of clectois.
