Klrsnirfswis Brooklyn?Nialemenl by the Medical Attendant. From Yesterday'sN. Y. Times. The brief announcement of the death of Henry Murray, of Baltic street, near Albany avenue, Brooklyn, of hydrophbia, i was made at Police Headquarters at a late hour on Sunday night. The peculiar circumstances attending the development and fatal termination of the case, are attracting considerable attention in Brooklyn and elsewhere. Murray was a laborer of sober habits and healthy constitution. On the night of October 19, 1875, while employed as a watchman on certain buildings in the suburbs of that city, he attempted to drive a strange cat from one of them. The animal sprang into his face and bit him on the nose, but the wound inflicted being nothing more than a mere scratch, he paid no attentionto it. The wound soon healed. On Thursday evening he felt a pain in his nose, but no thought of the encounter with the cat occurred to him, be supposing he had taken a cold. All that night he complained i of a headache, and of leeling languid, and I on Friday was quite ill, although he conJ tinned at his werk. On Saturday morning his respiration became labored, and ! he swallowed with difficulty, saying that i flis throat seemed to be closing against 1 him. His friends became alarmed at his symptoms, and Dr. John D. Sullivan, of ! No. 493 Tompkins avenue, was called in. 9r. Sullivan tells the following story of ' the case: "On Saturday afternoon I was called | in for the first time, and found bim in bed, but looking quite well. But, while , talking to him, he suddenly jerked up, all his muscles going into a spasm. After tailing me of his difficulty in drinking, I called lor a glass of water and handed it to him. As he took it his band began to tremble, and only with great eflort he succeeded at last in getting it to his mouth and taking a mouthful, lie had no actual 'dread of water'jwhich hydrophobia literary means, but his throat contraded violently, together with all the muscles of his body. The muscles were affected, but tte spasms were nervous. , After this was over ho seemod as well as ever in his life, except that ho (elt a soreness in his forehead, he said. At that I time 1 knew nothing about tlio cat-bite, j and not liking to frighten him with any . questions, 1 took his father and mother into another room and asked them if he had been bitten by any animal. They said no, except some ten years previously, when ho had been slightly bitten by a . dog. While talking with bis father, his mother went back, however, and questioned him on the subject, and he mentioned the cat-bite spoken of as tho only one. When 1 saw the symptoms were fully developed, I asked him about it, and he said that for the last two or three days he had had darting pains in his nose. There was, however, no swelling about the spot, nor any discoloration. 1 saw him again, yesterday morning, and his symptoms having become more intense in every way, in spite of tho remedies 1 had applied, 1 sought a consultation with another physician, and called in Dr. l'iicher. I had administered sedatives with some quinine. The quinine 1 gave him thinking he might not have recovered from an attack of malarial fever he had had some time before. When Dr. 1'ilcher arrived in the afternoon, the * ??-? ??:il althnttirh th?? &jrniptUIIJ0 WCIO BklH nviov, sedatives were increased, and we thought i the steam-bath was the only thing that could help him. However, there was no facilities lor it there, and when 1 went to the Police station for an ambulance, intending to take him to the hospital, where a hath could be had, I could not get one. It was, however, then to late. He was jumping and struggling violently, his agony being awful to witness. We finally concluded to let him alone, and he went rapidly into collapse, remaining in a very I low condition until 2 o'clock this morni ing, when he died from sheer exhaustion. There was, during his low state, more ; or less spasmodic action of the muscles 1 and a continual accumulation of foam? } 'sputum,' we would call it?in his mouth, which seemed to choke him when he triI ed to swallow arid to throw him into the spasms. He was not afraid of any iluid, hut could not swahow it, the attempt to do so almost asphyxiating him. At such times he grew livid." Young Murray remarked to Dr, Sullivan that if he could get the trouble out of his throat he would be all right. He retained his right muid until Sunday night, when he becainodelirious, and imagined that somebody was outside who wanted to shoot him. He also seemed to fear that the doctors were going to cui his nose off. He gave rational answers to questions, even when violently delirious. I)r Sullivan is fully of? the belief that the case was one ot genuine f hydpoj phohia. He is also ot opinion that if the ( case had been put under medical t'cati ment two weeks ago, the erfeots of the virus could have been eradicated from 1 the system, and the life of Mr. .Murray s&ved.
