French, of ltichtield Springs, sends us a sample of dried sweet corn, and says that with her moue of drying it. she never has any difficulty of keeping it until it is eaten up. 1 he cprn sent was very, dry, and would evidently keep an indefinite time. The following is tho process of drying; The corn is gathered at the most suitable state for boiling, not too old not too green; a thin slice is taken oft all around the outside of the ears with a sharp knife, taking off as little as possible, yet cutting tho top of from every kernel. Then with the back of the knife the ears are scraped, taking out all the inside of the kernels and leaving the skins and hulls on the cobs. The milky mass is then spread on plates, and dried in a quick oven, but not so hot as to scorch it. After it is nearly dried, it is put into thin muslin bags and bung up around tho stove until thoroughly dry. In order to keep it over summer it is put into muslin bags, and these are covered with paper, pasted, not tied, so that no insects can get in. Impeachment ?fTreasurer Itiirdett. We publish on our first page an account of the conclusion of tho trial of State Treasurer John 8. Burdett, by which it will be seen that he was found guilty of two counts in the charges, innocent of one and the others Were abandoned. The Ukoister, from which we copy this report, makes some very proper remarks in regard to the loose practicos that-have crept in among the public officers since llepublieauism has had the control ol the country and^which tho Democrats are determined to correct 80 lar as w..., ?ii twi'lt to a ricrul discharge of their duties. Air. Burdott violated no law, and. the State lost no ruoueyx but ho was found guilty of using tho State s money lor his personal peeniary benefit, though it was not done indirectly. Tho Court of Impeachment whs so well convinced that ho intended no criinootolfon.se, that it inllictod upon hiiu the lightest punishment possible, by simply removing him lroiu office, without disqualifying him from hereafter holding offices of honor and profit, as they had tho*power to do. Air. Burdett can now appeal from tho Senate to the people, if he chooses. Wo regret that Mr. Burdett has had tho misfortune to be the first man impeached in our State, for a rather intimate acquaintance of a number of years had learned u? to like his good qualities. But the rigid virtuo of the Democratic Court accomplished it and however harshly the blow tails upon him, it shows to the world that tho Democratic party will not permit any imitation of Republican frauds, even to too extent of irregularities; and the example will have a tendency to make all officials exceedingly careful, which is greatly to be desired in these days of official corruption. The offense of Mr. Burdett is not greater than receiving houses and horses, and almost everything olse, which Gen. Gram has done a hundred i times and the Kapublicaas who are now gloating over Mr. Burdett's impeachment J never said a word about them. We suppose they aie so much delighted because they think they can now say the Democrats are no bettor than they are, but they are mistaken. This action of the Democratic Senato ?there are only four Republicans in that Ix'dy and it required a two-thirds vote to impeach?tells the people plainly that it will not permit its officers to rest under I even a suspicion of improper conduct. I That in ail matters they must be liko | Cesar's w'le, above suspicion. It was ( this strictness that kept tho Democrats from perpertrating such frauds as the ; 1 crooked whisky" rings. Sanborn (.Tontracts, Credit Alobi.ler, ?.Vc., that bavo j disgraced the present national gotem1 ment. Put the butter into the skillet with the line cut cabbage, add the other ingredients and stir all the time until the cabbage heats well through. 3. i. m. In baking buckwheat and other griddle-cake*. a piece of suet as a "greaser" is by many thought to bo almost indispensable. Those who aro of this opinion will, on trial, soon learn that a turnip divided in two, answers the same or a better purpose, as the odor?tho most unpleasant part of cake-baking?comes from tho greaser in contact with tho hot iron,, whereas with the turnip very little of this is perceptible. Cuoked Oattlk? The folllowing recipe should be printed at least twice every year as it is a sure remedy: Take of fine-cut chewing tobacco enough to make a bail as largo as a hon's egg, dampen it with molasses so it can be pressed into a 5Lt*ll?*3 Aim iuuucuvcs miivii utv< wuv wseutial elements of the mighty future; to hear statesmen thunder in the .Senate and in the House; to see the President receive foreign ministers, Spotted Tail, George Washington Childs and Dick Harrington; and to behold Boss Shepherd's marvellous wealth grow isometric with tho debt of the District, were, to him, as the poet says, a desire and an attainment. He lound living in Washington by no means so expensive as he generally supposed. True, tho President requires $50,000 per annum, and perqui sites of about $50,000 more for his yearly visit to his furnished mansion* a member of Congress ekes existence on $5,000; a govornn.out clerk lives effeminately on $1,500 and Boss Sheptiard, whom honest , toil has taught frugality, spends, perI haps, not more than $80,000 per annum. Our hero boing neither a member, clerk, nor Boss, found that he could eat, sleep, and wear clothes, comfortably, and even respectably, for about $7U0 a year. This left him little margin lor theatre tickets, but in lieu of tragedy, he sought a seat in tho Senato " * i:-? 1 Hnlinu gHiirry nnu nsicnru w iuu ^i vuv uv??v at<?r of historic fiction detail the horrors that lived in his somhre imagination, and which his tropical fancy located in the provinces of Mississippi and Louisiana. These entertainnicots ho found quite as thrilling as anything in the Greek drama, and if the delineations wqre wanting ia a certain air of reality, such as is found for instance in the "Antigone" of Sophocles, or the writings of Jfaron Munchausen, and which is due to the absence of the unities of time, place, and probability, the speaker endeavored to make amends by frequency of iteration. "Tis sad hut true that intimate acquaintance is not-the atmosphere of hero worship; it surely lessens our admiration for some of our "truly great" men, hut then there is compensaiiou in the fact that wo become acquainted with those who, though little known, have all the attributes of greatness. For instance, our friend saw a Senator from Alabama whoso greatness had not been heralded. He was very little known, indeed scarcely known to exist, (except by those for whom he mixed drinks in a New York bar room), until ho took his seat in tiio highest legislative body in this hemisphere. And yet who will deny to this man, whose modest worth has not been blazoned, such attributes of greatness as representing, in the United States Senate, the great party of progress and moral ideas? Hi9 vote cancels Thurnian'sl His companions arc pimps und blacklegs; but it will be difficult, in looking oiur the lilcs of the daily papers, to find ofio that does not contain the announcement that this worthy gentleman has called upon the IVcsidcnt. Our neophito was well aware that the hackneyed quotation: "no man is a hero to his rulrl, ' lias been answered by the oh solvation that no vulet is capable of measuring a here, but, it puzzled him long to understand why tho great party that had been represented by Seward, Sumner, Chase and Wilson, now so frequently chase its heroes Iroui among the valetn. 1 may in tho future give other episodes from the experience of this young man, who, though bo looks at tho world spectacularly, sees deeper than the trappings of the pageant. It will not be unprofitable, in this one hundredth year, to study the influence of certain political phases on the rising generation. m a ^ "Ko?liice or Itnat." Detroit Free Pres. Ho had been telling her for weeks past that times were light, money scarce, bankruptcy stalking abroad through the land, and so forth, und she had consented to the discharge of the nurse girl, and up stairs girl, and had wheedled tho cook into doing general house work. That wasn t enough. He came home one night and said he was going to discharge the hostler; that money had gone up to 30 per cent; that ho couldn't afford to carry his life insurance any longer; that she mustn't ask for any more new clothes for a year. Sho went over the house and pinched expenses down again, and things ran along until the other day, when ho remarked: ' V.Ve've got to reduce still further or j bust!" , She whs pondering over his remarks late that evening wben he came Home. ! H'bat a Tonng Han from the Coan try Hoe* la Waabiayton. Washi?6TO*, February 7. From our regular correspondent. Life is thick with illusion*; experience is strewn with delusions, and all are crowded in Washington. A (few years ago a youth from the country made his irst visit to the National Capita). Ho was trash from out somewhat rhapsodic school histories ol the United States, and toll of the buncombe spirit of the Fourth of July* H? gazed upon the daubs of revolutionary and historic scenes in the rotunda of tb? Capitol, with something of the adoration of a savage for the sun. These pictures, ' The Landing ot the .Pilgrims," "The surrender of Lord Cornwallis," etc., have been reproduced on our national currency, and it is hoped the reader may be able, it be lilces, to rerresn nis memory from his pocket. But, to return to our hero, he waa young and enthusiastic then; had it not been lor the presence of a friend, youngor in years, but older in cynicism, and some young ladies who were dividing their silent admiration between him and the Eicture of "The marriage of Pocahontas," is patriotic emotion would have overflowed at bis eyes. His visit lasted for three days, during which he was almost alone in reverential reverie amid the grand architectural monuments of this city, which excel anything in Europe in proportionate expense. Congress was not in session; the President was not in the White House; Boss Shepherd was working at the plumbers trade; the country seemed to bo recovering from the war; the month was May; there was much to inspire patriotic hope. Just about this time the party of "progress and moral ideas" was sending such mis* sionaries as Spencer, West, Patterson arid Moses, with their little satchels, to the cotton States 1 Experience will, of itself, relieve a man of much Fourth of July etiervescence; experience at the National Capital will relieve him very soon.
