Preaching Commonplace Truth.
A prominent minister has lately
Wr published liis conviction that an eleI
mentof weakness in his ministry has
I been the shrinking from "saying, anil
1 saying again, things that are* common
| and even commonplace." We believe
I the point is well taken. Without
I doubt, many preachers are worried and
1 hampered in precisely this way. A
E man sets out to make a sermon, tor
mented with the idea that lie must oe
origiual, and that whatever he says, he
must say something that nobody lias
said before; or, at the very least, must
find a way of saying something that
has never before been found. Asa result
he works uneasily and often ineffectively.
There is danger, too, of his
growiug morbidly self-conscious, and
caring more for the impression made
by himself than for that made by the
truth on his hearers.
This snare is to be avoided, not by
lapsing lazily into the careless rcpitition
of platitudes, but by remembering
that people's lives are made up of common
things, and that the truth suited
to their needs is that which touches
common things in a real and earnest
way. The fault has often been found
with Longfellow's poetry that it is
mostly about everyday affairs. Mr.
Howell says truly that such a criticism
is the highest praise, for it means that
^ Longfellow has given us "the poetry
of general human life." And the finest
tribute to Wordsworth that we remember
is the saying of Mr. Lowell
fhof I* Jcs Krkcjf it; of 111** ftif
Ai AO yvoi |/VVV1J to v ? we
breathe."
jfeT Bringing the truth to bear upon familiar
experiences is what has made
the popularity and success of many
preachers who are not afraid to do it.
Mr. Moody once illustrated the benelit
' of trying different ways of reading the
Bible by his wife's experiments in
cooking tomatoes till at last he found a
style that he liked. It was a homely
comparison for a great audience in the
West End of London, but after all,
not homlier than thatof the kingdom
of heaven to the yeast that a woman
puts into her dough. Mr. Spurgeon is
another illustrious example of the
freshness and power of commonplace
truth spoken out of a warm heart and
loving sympathy with human needs.
Sin is a commonplace fact. The
misery it brings is an everyday matter.
The doom it threatens is an aflair ol
uuiversal concern. The temptations
that beset nipn and women and cliil
drew are familiar, namaruni, very ordinary
prose, not poetry or romance.
Aud when we look in the gospel that
tells of salvation from sin and help in
temptation, we find that its scenes and
sai'ings are all linked with everyday
life, the workshop and the farm and
. the fishing-boat, the household and
the market-place. Its good news is of
a Saviour who lived aud died not only
for men, but with them, and to whom
the common people listened gladly because
he spoke of common things, and
made the highest truth touch vitally
the most matter-of-fact duties and trials
and cares. The Christian preacher
is privileged to declare just such a
commonplace gospel, and the fact of
its being so is tlie very thing to keep
his heart afire and his hope alive, and
to preserve him from growing tired or
tiresome in preaching it.

Jobu Wesley's Silver Plate.
.
In the year 1776, John Wesley received
the following letter, in consequence
of a recent resolution of the
(government, that circulars snoum ue
sent to all persons who were suspected
of having plate, on which they had
not paid the duty:
"Reverend Sin: As the commissioners
cannot doubt that you have
plate for which you haye hitherto neglected
to make* an entry, they have
: directed me to send you a copy of the
lords' order, and to inform you that
they expect you forthwith to make
the entry of all your plate, such entry
to bear date from the commencement
of the plate duty, or from such time
as you have owned, used, had or kept
any quantity-of silver plate, chargeable
by the act of parliament; as in default'thereof,
the board will be obliged
to signify your refusal to their lordships.
"js. B.?An immediate answer is
desired."
) J. Wesley replied as follows:
"Sir:?I have two silver teaspoons
at London, and two at Bristol; this is
all the plate I have at present; and I
snail not uuy any inure wmie su iuanj
around rue want bread."
"I am, sir, your most humble servant,
John Wesley."

One of the most formidable obstacles
to the cause of peace, in this country,
is the Revolutionary war. Had the
American Revolution failed, it would
have been a bloody rebellion.
As it succeeded, we call it a glorious
Revolution. But the end should not
sanctify the means. We should look
at it by the light of eternity. Did it
not send many a poor soul to his last
account "with all his imperfections on
his head ?" Would any one give his
own soul for all the advantages of the
Revolution ? If such a person can bo
found, then he can easily answer the
question of Christ, "What shall a man
give in exchange for his soul?"
We live by faith, and faith lives by
exercise. As is said of some men,
they are never well but at work; so
here hinder faith from working, and
