. .7 " " ' "yr " \> :*\v? -.->: , * ! The Fewer of Kindness and Decision in Training Children. "Papa the boys are to have a bonfire in the street to-night. May we go?"j "Ask your mother.'' "Yes, we have, sir, but she only shook her head." "Well, my dear boys, surely you do not wish to go against your mother's judgment?" We have but one head in our family the united head of father and mother. If our opinions differ, we consult and agree on our plan. Five years after this bonfire, as wej sat at tea, I said. "Boy9, you remem-1 ber Thorn Fin ley V" "Yes, father, lie always spent hisi eveniugs in the street, or, as mother used to say, "took lessons in the streetschool." "Well, Thorn has fihislied his lessons." "What, not dead !" "No, worse. To-day he came rushing iuto the house and upstairs, and came down with a gun in his hand." "Here, Thorn, stop," said his mother, "don't carry that out. It is loaded." "I know it," said Thorn. "I'll fix him," and rused into the street and shot Mr. Smith dead." "Poor Thorn ! he hod never learned to obey his mother, or to govern himself." "Ah, dear mother!" said the boys, "we can never be sufficiently thankful A~ no niif nf fho <;i rppf W JOU 1UI nccpiu^ uo vuv wi V..V and for interesting us in books which J you and father yourselves selected Tor us." _JThorn was sixteen years old. A few weeks later he was examined and received his diploma, which read "sixteen years at iiari> labor in jackson state prison." The lessons of the street-sehool are terribly efficient. These details may seem trivial, but the world is made of particles, and the sea composed of drops, yet the land and the sea are not trifles. These details are lessons which teach obedience and self-government, and these are far from being trifles. To the nation's obedience to God's . moral Jaw, like obedience to his physical law, would draw all to revolve in harmony around one common center of power and love, while disobedience repels and tends to chaos and destruction. In the family loving obedience is cohesion, while disobedence is final ruin. And throughout all human life, obedience and self-government involve all the duties we owe to God and man, and are everything desirable, while disobedience and ungoverned passion are everything fearful and hateful. Mary Peek. THE POWER OE UNIFORM KINDNESS AND DECISION IN TRAINING CHILDREN She says : "About twenty-five years ago I taught a kind of mission school near Utica, New York. All my pupils were small and ungoverned, mostly Dutch, many of then unable to speak a word of English. Among them all, Mary Peek was the worst. All her teachers had had great trouble with her. xne nrsi. uay sue cauie, Jier moiuer came with her and said to me. 'Mary is a bad girl. I want you to 'lick' her; that is what she wants ; she wont mind without it.' "I looked at the little girl. She was about ten years old. She was running and jumping upon the desks, aud seemed perfectly wild. I said to myself, she is a Topsy, and I believe she has had nothing but beating all her life. One day after she had given me a great deal of trouble, I went to her and laid my hand kindly on her head, intending to say something to make her a better girl. 1 have never struck her, and did not mean even to punish her that way, as I was sure she had already^Jiad too much 'lickin,' as her n}i?ther called it. '""""Quick as a cat she seized my hand and bit it, her teeth meeting in the thin part of my hand, between the thumb and finger. She shook it as a dog would. It hurt and startled me so that I could not suppress a scream. Then she sprang upon her desk, and and skipped from desk to desk, she almost flew three or four times around the room, upsetting ink and knocking pft' books and slates. I was so surprised by the - suddenness of the whole thing that I could only look to see what next. When she saw that she was not pursued, as she expccted, then she came lip to me and said : " 'Now lick me.' " "I said, 'I do not wish to whip you, Mary.' But I took her by the hand and led her into a closet and locked her in. All was still for a few minutes, then she began to kick and pound the door, and cry, 'Let me out, let me out!' Finding this accomplished nothing, then this little girl only ten years old began to swer in the most dreadful manner, Baying' "I will kill you, I will kill you," still kicking and poundiug the door and screaming at the top of her voice. 1 took no notice. An hour flnil a. hnlf Inter T <iicimiauprl thr> school, and then remained silent. She gradually made less noise. I waited half an hour after she became quiet then I looked in. I shall never forget how she looked. She sat on the floor, and as I opened the door she raised her great brown eyes?they were beautiful eyes?but otherwise she did not move. Something in her eyes touched my heart. I think she must have seen it, for when I went to her and said,'Come with me, Mary, and let us have a little talk,' she"got up without a word. I had wound my handkerchief around my hand where she bitten it; she seized it and kissed it, and began to cry, and said, 'Did it hurt you very much ?' " 'Not half so much, Mary, as it hurts my heart to have you a naughty girl.' She kissed my hand over and over again, and cried aud said, 'Why didn't you lick me? Mother told you to; I heard her.' " 'I did not wish to whip you, Mary,' I said ; 'I think you have whipping enough. Whipping will not make you a good girl. Nobody can do that for you; you must do that for yourself. We must all do that for our selves.' "I talked with her until nearly dark, trying to make her see how much -TJettCTuV<ytri<M)e for her to be?<vk1 ; how much more everybody would love her. ^ "'Wouldyou love'me? Don't you want to lick me?' "'Yes, I would love you, and I do not wish to whip you, Mary. I only wish you to be a good and happy girl.' "The next day she came to school as quiet and subdued as I could wish. "After school had begun, she came to me and said. " 'Teacher, may I come aud sit by you ?" "I said, "If you recite your lessons well.' She went to her seat, and when her class was called she spelled every word correctly. "My seat was on a platform, and j3v Z - v .. ..- h..:: I every day she came regularly and sat by me, leaning against my lap, and I never looked down at her without meeting her beautiful brown eyes ever fixed on mine full of love. 1 never had any more trouble with her. She wasalwaye the first to meet me in the morning, and the last t<> leave me at night. "I think the poor child had never been Joved by anyone before, and when she found out that there was so sweet a thins in this world tis love, it was easy for her to be governed by it and to govern herself. "Love rules the courts, the camp, the grove, I And men below, ami saints above, For love is Heaven and Heaven is love." One thought more < ? 1,1 7 Jam now eignty-iour yearsuiu. 1 have had long experience in teaching. I have carefully observed different modes of training families, and the effects, and I have trained a large family of my own, and now I wish to say that in my opinion parents can reach the best results in training their children by practicing these three things:? J. Religiously keep the Sabbath. 2. Read the Bible daily in your family 3. And above all, love, and teacb your children to love and obey God, your heavenly Father. <May God help you and give you the best results. ^ Let a woman have every virtue under the sun, if she is slatternly, or even negligent in her dress, her merit? will be more than half obscured. If, being young, she is untidy, or,. being old, fantastic or slovenly, the mental qualifications stand a chance of being passed over with indifference. Extracts from Christian Neighbor President Cleveland has sent out his letter of acceptance of the nomination for the second term in that office. After waiting this long he might have waited a day or two longer and thereby saved infringement on the Sabbath day. A fire in San Francisco Septem be 9, originating in a sash and door fac tory, destroyed property estimated at one and a quarter million dollars. All through South Carolina heavy rains have fallen daily for near twc weeks. Rivers are up, low land* Hooded, corn and cotton greatly injured. The Savannah River, too, is greatly swollen, and the crops along its banks ruined. Yellow fever is tightening its grip on Jacksonville and has spread into Alabama.
