If with the mercury c it 68 degs. he is not warm enough, c nore clothing or wraps should be put )n, but the warmth of the room 1 ihould not be iucreased. There are ^ jxceptiona to all rules, and doubtless 8 ;here are cases of invalids and aged 8 persons who require a higher degree of 1 aeat than above indicated. But for e ;he majority rooms heated above this imit are enervating to the occupants, D ind make them liable to invasion of 0 various maladies that lie in wait dur- v ng cool weather to pounce on the un- 1 n ary. 8 A lady who has spent several win- r ;ers in Germany tells us that there she v :ould never raise the temperature of t] ler rooms above 58 degs. Fuel is icarce and high-priced, and the porce- c ain stoves used for heating purposes c emper rather than heat the air, while fi hey never burn it as do so many of b >ur cast-iron heaters. But she cloth- r2 id her children, and some of them&i were oabies, so warmly that they were perfectly comfortable, and they did no t > have a single cold all the time they j were there. They were entirely free , from the catarrhs which gives us so much trouble. Doubtless one secret of this freedom lay in the fact that there _ was a diminished difference in. the #1 temperature within doors and without no njmirirn-nil ttf tfli fUrtf I AA in uo vvutyaiwu tt itu iuai uiuucuvv m this country, and their clothing pre- '-fjjjj pared them for either or both. It cannot have escaped the notice of the careful observer that we rarely take cold when the weather is growing colder, but rather when it changes from cold to warm. The increasing cold warns us to protect ourselves from it, while a change in the opposite direc" ;>] tion is likely to find us unguarded. " We take cold oftener from being in too .: -S. warm a room or from being too warm-ly clad in mild weather than from the v^Jj reverse of these conditions. A thermometer frequently consulted ' will soon enable one to tell by his own sensations within a degree or two the temperature of the room in which he J; is sitting, and warn him to remove his , "J overcoat, or lighten his clothing in ? some way, or to add to it a lap robe, or to find elsewhere such a temperature as he requires. In the absence of $ ability to procure or command right condition, a full recognition of such as ;V< are adverse, and a strong mental resist- "-.Q ance to them, will, in many cases, di- ;*-j minish, if not entirely prevent, un- 'I'M pleasant results. Such has been our 'ft experience. ? ^ About Nickel. When refined and used in its pure state nickel is one of the most brilliant j.., >. and durable metals ever discovered. i?| It receives a beautiful polish, will nei- ther tarnish nor corrode, and is vir* tually indestructible. Its best quail- $|i ties are almost unknown to the general i<-M public, though the craftsman is familiar with them, having utilized them in pi the manufacture of delicate and expensive instruments. The public . knows nickel only as an ingredient, with copper, in the alloy of our fivecent pieces, and in the form of electro- ;\r{& plating over iron, for cutlery, grates, etc., where immunity from rust and ^fij tarnish is sought. Its luster and *'>?2 strength make it superior to silver it3elf for many household articles, because it is not easily discolored by acids, and doe9 not wear out its "good clothes," as silver-plated ware must do, f$j to maintain a respectable appearance. Solid nickel is in use in Germany as a '-fM lining for bath-tubs, is employed for uar and carriage furnishings, and it takes the place of steel, brass and sil ver in the manufacture of knives, forks, buttons, ornaments, harness and saddlery trimmings. Edison, the jreat electrical inventor, has found it necessary, because superior to iron, in manufacturing the; heat generator of jlectricity, but has been compelled to jend to Europe to obtain it in sufficient $? quantity. Power of Making or Marring. In the first place, whatever Individ- ^ ual views we may hold about troubles \vi| aeing the dispensations of Providence, ^ it becomes a wicked and unwarrantable thing for us to contsitut'e ourselves 3 is self-appointed agents. Some of us ;lo this more or less deliberately, by . putting trials and tests of all sorts on people of whom we pretend to be fond. Nothing is more ruinous. Our > f ? kvay should be rather to make the per- , feet way the easy way, to let nothing $j| anar the constant view of the ideal, to present no other pioture but the perfect >ne, instead of doing as we too often lo, put little stumbling blocks in the | ,vay of the weak member. Think of how many people test heir children, their servants and their 'riends long before their strength ia >i jqual to it, and who, in this way, mar p i growth that might otherwise have ? . $j| itrengthened into perfection. Most of is, however, act unconsciously in the natter, not because we mean to put >bstacles in the way of others, but be- . sause few of us think enough about . neaning not to do it. We never stop o consider how in our daily intercourse in immense power lies in our hands o naking or marring each other's lives How to be Graceful. A school-girl misses a great deal of -.V -aluable education who hurries away o school, morning and afternoon, -fi vithout having used her muscles in lelpiug her mother. She missessomehintr else, which, in a few years, she vj vill know to value better than she loes now?grace of movement and arriage. , What makes a girl graceful? It is ising all her bodily powers. A student vho is nothing but a student soon be- ), ;ins to stoop, and the habit, once be;un, grows inveterate and incurablelalf our school girls cannot walk with ase and grace. We see this very plainly on Comaencement days, when the members f the graduating class are obliged to ralk a few steps before the audience. 'heir dresses are often too costly and plendid; their hair is beautifully aranged; their pieces are creditably written: one thing only they lack ; hey cannot walk! A girl who would have a graceful arriage, a. sound digestion, a clear ? omplexion and fine teeth, must work jr them every day, and no work is .'M.j&d etter for the purpose than the ordina. ? j work of a house done with diligonco id carefulness. ; n -' "$! j
