( Xew Through Schedule Over the G., C. A X. Railway. Last Sunday night the Wild Irishman started out of Atlanta over the Q.,C. & N. Railway ? and reached Abbeville on schedule time?ten 1 o'clock. % Quite a number of odds and ends of citizens assembled at the depot to see it make its first trip, and give Abbeville the grand bouuce, so to speak, but contrary to expectation it stop- . ped to let off and take on passengers. A little before ten o'clock tbe reflected rays * of tbe headlight of the engine were seen at ? tbe coal sbute, and in a little while the engine began to creep down the hill toward the depot, where the crowd was standing. At 9.5S 1 telegraph operator J. A. Scott signalled, when J Conductor Murphy pulled the bell cord, and Engineer Garrison brought engine 501 and the train to a standstill at the station. Half an hour before ten o'clock James ^ King, Moee Merrlwether and John Neal, ap- 1 plied for tickets to Greenwood. Night tele- I graph operator and ticket agent J. A. Scott, v not knowing whether to sell tbe tickets, ap- " plied his flingers to the little ticker on the ta- * Klntn ?Ka nfflrta onH In a 1 if fin tvhlla t.ho llt.Hp * ticker aoswered, and the tickets were sold. 1 A little later John W. Sign, Jr., applied for a ticket to CUntOD, which was furnished. These four made up the local travel from Abbeville on the ftrst train by the new schedule. Everybody on the Incoming train Jumped off as soon as the train stopped. The train consisted of a mall and express ooach, two passenger coaches and two sleepers. The "through passengers" on the sleep- I ere did not get up to see us ami we did not go I through the train to see tbem. I Exactly at ten o'clock the engine bell sound- I ed and the train began to move. In the shortest sort of time it went skimming along the track at a rapid rate, and was soon out of sight, though we could still bear the clatter of the wheels as the train went toward Long Cane. This tram makes but odc regular stop in j Sooth Carolina, and that Is at Chester. Abbe I v 111e, Greenwood and Clinton are "flag sta- I tlons," at which this train will always stop, 11 I passengers desire to stop, and whether they I have passengers aboard or not, they will always 8top if the operator will signal. The new schedule is a desirable one. As yet it is made of ordinary cars, but Id August their new and splendid vestibule trains will be put on the road. AN EDITOR'S GOOD FORTUNE. 1 Hon. T. B. Crew* of the Lnnretinvllle Herald is Made Postmaster. The Press and Banner is very glad to note 4 that Editor Tbos. B. Crews has received the appointed of postmaster at Laurens Court House. He has many frlendR In Abbeville, who o knew blm and respected him long ago. The editor of the Press and Banner bfts known him all bis lile, and during all tbat T time oar personal feelings have been friendly I to him, despite the fact tbat his newspaper has so often chosen to say unkind things ot tbls newspaper and Its editor. fr Editor Crews, like a majority of men who have had control of newspapers during the L last thirty years, has bad a stormy time, and we trust that he may now enjoy four yeare of quietude. While we do not see his paper now, and while we do not want to see It until it learns to treat its old friend with civility, yet there la no one within the range of his acquaintance wbo is more pleased at his appointment than we are. He has In tbe past bad empty political honors from the Tillman party, and now it Is his turn to receive substantial favors, as bede- / serves to do. & BEAUTY AND CHIVALRY. ^ Gathered from the Fonr Quartern of the Earth. Oak Grove, May 2, 1893. J The people of Oak Hill were entertaned Mnn/tatr nloht with a mnrm 1 Icrht nlon in irivan fortbe school, which is very successfully and profitably presided over by the beautiful and accomplished Miss Ida Johnson of Due West. Tte occasion will be one of lasting remembrance to all who partook of the hospitality ol those good people. Atevening when theday was vanlshinglnto / night, gallant young men and beautiful la- * dies were gathering from every direction, and C( soon the school house was filled, also the seats i? that were neatly arranged outside were filled up; then beauty and chivalry were mingled la together until nine o'clock, when all were Invited to assemble around a lengthy table that waB groaning under its burden of delicious f cakes, fruits, candles and delicacies that were * most palatable. Upon the table was placed several vases that held beautiful llowers which made it look most picturesque. The house was beautifully decorated with flowers, evergreens and lilies that were most artistically arranged by the hands of Miss Ida Johnson, Miss Mamie Smith, Miss Minnie Anderson and MissTressa Smith, The word P| "Love" occupied a most conspicuous place on . the wall, and the letters were made of flowers V1 very neatly inscribed. n< Supper bafagsettled with a refreshing show- < er of raln^/verybody talked and laughed all they coul' ' The males being in excess to the ar females, i me of them sat In the corner and swapped ,okes?some good ones were told. 13 We did not tary long with them, but talked * to our best girl just the same. We were not left either. I am sorry to say our friend got . VlMHntwopu urora nnf in full blflRt. Hnd they did not go alone. Abbeville. Bradley. tl< Verdery. Wblte flail, Brierwood, Pine Grove and Bucklevel were represented. ?
