J An unsuccessful attempt at lynching was made here Wednesday morning by an armed mob of 100 men from Calhoun Falls. Tin' Intended victim was Will Willefortl, a 15-year-old negro, charged with cutting a white boy named Avers at Calhoun Falls last Saturday: Jailer Cox, warned of the attempt, spirit i ed tin' prisoner away in timo to save his [life. There being no prisoners in the jail, the mob dispursed, after searching the J premises. There was no disorder. ' ! Sheriff Lyon kept the prisoner und? r i ! strong guard all night and carried him to j Columbia for safekeeping. Ayers is said to bo in a serious condition - in a hospital at Greenwood.
