Iowa Election.— The result of the recent elec tion in Iowa, as far as ascertained, is thus com mented upon by the Cincinnati Enquirer: “We have received a paper published at Coun cil Blufts, Potawatnmie county, which has the returns of that precinct, in which the Democrat ic majority is set down at one hundred and fifty. The county has undoubtedly given three or four hundred for Hall, instead of liUty-four, as repor ted. The Black Republican boast of fifteen hundred for Curtis is all gammoti, as will be verified by the official result. On the State ticket the Black Republican majority will not exceed three thousand five hundred in our judgement, if it comes up to that number; we say Black Republican, but the truth is, all of the State officers elect arc Fillmore men. and were nominated by a Fillmore Convention, .find af terwhrds taken up and voted for by the Aboli tionists. The Fillmore men have a o perate electoral ticket: and the division of the factions will undoubtedly give Buchanan the State in November.” Destructive Futts and Loss of Life.— On Monday night a Are brok out in the .Belvidere House at Belvidere Flat, (opposite Knight s I er ry.) and totally destroyed the building. Two men, by the name of Woodworth and Eldridge, who were sleeping in the house at the time, were burned to death. Eldridge succeeded in making his escape from the flames, but survived only about two hours. The family residing in tbe'house narrowly oscapi d with their lives by jumping from the windows. A large wagon be longing to Mr. McGowan, which, at the time was standing in front of the house heavily freighted with goods, caught fire, and was to tally destroyed, with its contents. The house was a large frame building, occupied for some time past by Mr. Chimin and family as a hotel. The fire is supposed to have originated from a candle by which Mr. Woodworth was reading, coming in contact with the cloth ceiling. — Stock ton Argus. Distressing Occurrence.— A sou of Mr. Good fellow, of Downieville, aged three years, while playing in the Daguerreau room Mrs. Shultz, at that place, wanting a drink of water, and seeing a bottle of Sol. Cyauuret of Potassium on the table, supposing it was water, poured some of the poison into a cup and swallowed it. His father came in immediately after and discover ed the fatal mistake. lie immediately carried -the little fellow into Dr. McKibbc’s office, where every effort was made to save him, but alas ! all remedies were useless. He died in sixteen min utes after he had swallowed the poison. The poor child had beet: absent from his mother’s side but a minute or two when he took the fatal potion. The poison is clear and limpid, and may easily be mistaken for water. —Sierra Dem. Americans in China.— It is stated that a com pany of Americans are about building a couple of steamers to run on the rivers of China. The rivers of that country are peculiarly adapted to steamboat navigation ; and then look at the canals, one of which is nearly as wide as tlie Hudson, and as long as the Ohio river. The Empire is full of people, full of towns, and full of fabrics. These must make steamboating un usually profitable. Another Repudiation.— The Memphis Appeal publishes the letter of Hon A. G. Watkins, K. N. member of Congress from Tenncsee, in wli'cli be renounces Naow-Nothingisui, and espouses the cause of Buchanan and Breckinridge—ex pressing his regret that he had not joined the Democratic party two years ago, instead of the Know-Nothings. Very Dark Indeed. —Fred Douglass, the ne gro, takes down the names of Smith and McFar land from his paper, and in a long articlecoracs out for Fremont and Dayton. Congressional Nominations.— The fusion Convention of Whigs and Democrats at Rock land, Maine, have nominated Henry Ingalls, Dem., for Congress. Masonic notice.— the members of Nevada LODGE, No. 13.
