The Chicago I'ribun* gives the following de
tails of the burning of the steamer Niagara,
Which occurred oil Lake Michigan, Sept. 27th.
The Niagara left Collingwood on Monday af
ternoon at 2 o clock, i.i place of the Keystone
State, the regular steamer for that day. Sac
started with Irom one hundred and litty to one
hundred and seventy-live passengers, twenty-live
or thirty of whom sue la. ah d at She hoy gaa, the
greatest portion of whom were steerage passen
gers. At about 2 o’e.uek 1’. M. of Wednesday
the Niagara left Sheboygan, a.id about two
hours afterwards was d.scovered to be on lire.
When tnu tire washed discovered, there was but
little sea on, and the wind was about soutneast
and light. At tnis time the Nlagara was from
three to four miles oil North l'oiut Washington,
and some ten miles or more this side of Sheboy
gan. As soon as the lire was discovered, Cap
tain Miller, who was asleep, was called, and the
steam pumps put to work.
A few moments after this, the passengers be
came aware that the boat uu lire, and a
scene ensued which, said a passenger, “beggars
all description—consternation seized upon al
most every one, and men, women and children
rushed to und fro about the boat, shouting and
crying. Not half a dozen passengers gave any
aid to the crew, and but few attempted to make
provision for their own or friends’ escape. It
was hut a short time from the first discovery of
the tire until the whole upper cabiu was in
flames. During this time a large number of
passengers had jumped overboard without any
thing lo support them in the water, and in a few
momenta sunk. Mothers threw their children
into the lake and wildly sprang after them.—
The water was intensely cold, and none but the
hardiest persons could live in it but a few mo
nreuts. A large number of passengers, before
the steamer stopped, in spite of the appeals of
the mate, got into the stern boat and lowered
it, when it instantly swamped, and all in it
were drow ned. Another portion of the passen
gers filled the starboard quarter-boat, and low
ered that also, and all found a watery grave.
Before the upper cabin was i.i flames, a por
tion of the more self-possessed of the passengers
wrenched the state room doors off, and threw
them into the water, together with table.-,
chairs, stools, Ac., a,.d upon these many of those
ill the water saved themselves. After it hod be
come useless to remain on hoard a >y longer,
the second engineer, carpenter, and a portion
of the crew, together with a number of passen
gers," twenty-two p rsons in nil, lowered away
the larboard quarter boat, a.id pulled to the
. shore, where the passengers w ere landed, and
the crow returned with the boat to rend r any
assistance they might be able. (.'apt. Miller,
with a number of others, saved themselves by
cringing to the w heel, a.id Were picked up by
the boats.”
There were over three hundred life-pre.-ervers
on the Niagara, wli.eli. together with life stools
ami floats, would be suilicient. if properly used,
for the temporary safety of nearly five hundred
persons. Captain M Her informed Mr. Wheeler,
however, that lie d d not think a half dozen life
preservers or stools had been put in requisition
by the passengers, so great was tlieir terror and
haste to jump overboard.
F.vTAt. Accident. A most distressing acci
dent occurred at St. Joe Bar la-t \u > k. A Ger
man woman, wife of Mr. Igritz. was stepping
across the shaft of a water wheel while it was
in motion, a ul her dress becoming entangled
she was dragged und r the shaft. There botog
a very small spnc ■ between the shaft and the
ground, sin was crush d to d atli before the
wheel could be stopp d.— Sierra Dan.
