The agent sav* two steamer* will soon start from New York, and trade with California will be reopened very shortly. On Tnesdav evening la«t the steamer Banner left Sacramento for Martinez, hav ing on board 40 horses, which bad joat ar rived Across the plain*. Monster Units for the New Monitor* and Iron Plated War Ships. The Pittsburg Chronicle, or Juue 16th, MJ»: The Fort Pin Work, in this city Imre received an order from the Govern, tnent for the constructi >n of a new clan of heavy glint, intended for the iron plated vessel* now in course of completion at New York and elsew here. Hitherto, eleven-iuch Kims have hern the largest used in the navy, hut the present order calls for a ntim tier of flftven-tuch Dahlgteen’s, designed tc suit the tiinel* of such vessels as the Mon itor, of which there are several now build ing. The length of each of these new gun* it thirteen feet live inches; depth of bore n hundred and thirty inches;dinuieler ol bort II1 1 veil inches; greatest diameter 48 inches; diameter at the muzzle in the t ough, thirty eight inches. The muzzle, however, is to in* tut tied elf to twenty six ami a hall inches and from tlu nce taper up to nothing at the base line (u line struck through at the base of the cylindrical bore). The thickness of the metal outside of the bore at the base line will he sixteen and a hall inches; from this line to the outside of the circle it will he twenty.four inches. A amall tapering gas chamber will Ik* formed la-bind the bore at the base line, a hole one tilth ol an inch will lie drilled one inch hack from the cen ter. then carried straight to the top fot miner the rent. These guns, when finished, will not only be the largest, lint the best and most beau tiful navy guns in the world. They are not to lie cast solid, as has been tisuul with navy gnus heretofore, bill will be casi hol low and cooled upon Captain Rodman's principle. It would la? impossible to obtain a good, sound, solid casting of such a size; hence the necessity ot casting hollow. Kach of the Monitor class of vessels, armed with them, will lie able to burl shot weighing four hundred and twenty live pounds, which is nearly three time* the weight of the toiind siiiit fired from the large.-t Armstrong gnu yet made for lhe IJriiish navy. We might add that two new fourteen inch guns have lately been ca«t at the Wotks, each of which, when finished, will weigh over 28 tons. How the Itrbela roiiaole tltrmaelea for the I.on* of New Orlenna. The Northern people exult over what they ere proud to call there-opening uf the Mississippi. That they virtually power the river, and can lire It for purpos e of war in unquealionalile, but that the river is open to their commerce, or of oilier service to them than a* a road for iron clad vessels, is untrue. Until the Southern Confederacy ie deetroyed. the Mississippi cannot again ••ecoine a channel for commerce. While a •ingle point upon itw vast extent, on either bank, ie acceeeible to hoelile partieH, it can convey armed verrele only, and although they have New Orleans and the principal stragrtic poeilion nbore if, they have not driven tin Confederate!* from many hun dred milee of ite shores, whence they can atop trade and passage ai* completely at by the gun* of Fort I’illow or Columbus. Tli! fall of New Orleana and the conse quent conquest of the Mississippi, was a heavy blow to the Confederacy, and dimin ishes its resources for supplies. Hut it is far from lieiug irrelrieveable. The recov ery of that river will lie as easy as its loss. Victories in tlie North will compel the Uni ted States to recall its troops, eveniflbe yellow fever does not do its work, in tbe next <50 days, so effectually as to leave none to recall. New armies will lie formed in the States which border that river, which will retake New Orleans. No treaty ot peace is possible which would leave tbe riv er iu the hand* of the North. An effort will be made to render the great city at its mouth a free town, like Hamburg and Bre men: hut it will be an indecisive war and a drawn battle only which will render the project possible. The people of the'Missis sippi. country and town, are entirely Siu them, bitterly hos'ilc to the United Slates, and. without an exception, resolved forev er to la- enlistment parts of the Confedera cy. If the Confederacy lives, it will be im possible to give that river and Its valley anv political connection other than nature ordains for it. Reyond the separation from Texas and Arkansas, and the loss of tbe cattle supply we might obtain from that source, its present possessions by the ene my is of no real importance In the actual war or in the future rendition of the coun try.—[Richmond Examiner, June 14-th. > r A Bkotai. saloon keeper in San Francisco was arrested the other day for netting dog» upon an unoffending Chinaman.
