QUART/ MIXES AM) MIXING. Mu. Editor. — As the public at tention seems to be somewhat attrac to thP 4 «ubject of quartz mining at the present time, it may be well to make mention of those localities wh««jj the goid-nearir.g quartz is being proved sufficiently rich to warrant the capi talist safe in investing his money in machinery to extract the precious metal from its naiive bed, and thus open a field for profitable employment to many who are seeking such an op portunity. For this reason, I propose to offer a few thoughts concerning Brown’s Valley, (called by some Fer gersonvillc, ) which is situated about fourteen miles above Marysville on the Yuba. This is one of those spots on the face of the great footstool which lias, until recently, remained almost entirely unknown, and it will proba bly be a long time yet before it will be fully appreciated. But at present many are deeply interested in its su perficial developments, and we may well anticipate the time not far distant when astonishing results of the sturdy arm of industry will show forth in labor, ranking with the most profit able which has ever been expended in this golden land. This valley is upon the north side of the river and adjacent to Dry creek. It abounds in quartz in several places. What is known as Quartz Hill, is certainly a curiosity. It is almost literally co vered with quartz, and upon the sur face rock, even, in many places, gold may be seen with the naked eye com pletely intermixed with the rock. The rock is found to be very good, gene rally; and what is better, the best speciracms which h;is yet been taken out, were taken from the deepest shafts—thus rendering it probable that far deeper than any have sunk, the quartz is exceedingly rich. We no ticed rare specimens from the Penn sylvania, llawkeye, and Plymouth companies claims, all of which were ! taken from near liio surface. Itisj almost impossible, as yet, to • the number or direction of the veins which abound in Quartz Hill. It is generally believed, however, that not less than four may he traced in il, two are north and south, and south-west and north-east, and another nearly cast and west. The boulders from ) these seem like real veins in many j instances, and until much labor is per formed it cannot lie determined satis factorily the number nor direction of the veins. The north and south veins may be traced with certainty some three-fourths of a mile and it is con fidently believed that fhequauz found upon an eminence some one and a half miles north north of the southern ex tremity, is of the north and south veins, hut this is not fully determined. There arc also several other veins in the same range of hills, which, so far as has been determined by the very par tail prospecting which has been dune, bid fair to pay well when the right kind of machinery is applied. It is thought by good judges that the springs at the base of the hill will be sutlicient to supply several mills by preparing proper cisterns to retain the water. There is already a mill in process of erection upon Dry Creek, by the Pennsylvania company, which will be ready to operate soon. The llnwkeyc company, 1 understand, have con | traded for a steam mill to be put up ■ as soon as it can Lc obtained, and (he Plymouth company intend to erect machinery immediately near their claims. There is no doubt but that in a few months there will he as much profita ble mining done in Brown’s Valley as any where in California, by the same capital ami number of laborers. Ike can judge this only from what we , saw with our own eyes, and heard I with our own ears —and seeing and , hearing, we judge for ourselves, h rom | what we conk! learn, those companies we have already named, have located ! upon the best portions of the veins, so I far as discovered. The Plymouth I company, (formerly called Nevada I company,) seems to have one advan tage over all of the others. The rich north-east and south-west vein runs diagonally from one corner to the other of their claims, while the two main north and south veins pass through so as to cross transversely, and thus form several junctions, which are said to be richer than any other portions of quartz veins. While looking upon their veins, and examining their spe cimens, we could not check the reflec tion that they had selected of all names the most appropriate, and that, as on the Plymouth rock the wearied Pil grims landed in safety after a perilous and daring voyage, so had these ex plorers and seekers for gold, after tedious and persevering struggles, found the rock on which to locate, and fulfil their highest hopes of worldly gain. May they find it so. Many others have good claims without any I doubt, and we hope and believe that none of them who persevere w ill fail of an abundant reward. Although we could not avoid the conclusion that the Plymouth company had the fairest prospects of any* company which has located at Brown’s Valley, yet we be lieve that scarcely one can fail to do well. The veins are of considerable thickness, ami may he worked to good advantage. The facilities for trans portation arc also good—the road to Marysville for the entire distance be ing of the best Jescpription. At pre sent, there are two public houses r.t Brown’s Valley. The Plymouth com pany are erecting a house, but it is [ said to be for their own use. Having taken a careful survey of the Brown’s Valley attractions, we proceeded to the recently discovered ] quartz veins on the small stream call- | cd the Honeut, which empties into Feather river ft short distance above Marysville. The-e veins arc located I about five miles from Winters’ Hold, situated on the “ Foster’s Bar road,” north-west. They arc largo veins, we should judge from the surface rock, and their general appearance is quite : good. In the rock taken from the Pacific company’s claims gold could be ' seen with the naked eye. This is 1 another region into which, no doubt, thousands wid go ami reap well fori their capital and labor. At present | there arc no inhabitants lor several | miles through that region, save the, wild natives who seem delighted to meet the friendly white man. The j valleys are fertile, and would produce abundant crops if there was sufficient moisture. Brown’s Valley is of a; rich soil, and if there was any means to offset the extreme dryness of the i climate it would be a Idightful loca tion for the agriculturist- (Amid the | water bo brought from a neighboring J stream w'.lll'dUt too much expen.-c, t* • would no doubt be n vc ry great auxil iary in rendering the valey a good location for all chi—es, as the grounds for sluice-washing must bo very ex-| tensive upon Quartz Hill. Mr. Corn, President of Plymouth company, in formed me that ho washed from one : pan of earth, taken from n pit in the claims of that company, one dollar and j twenty-five cents. Others have found i good panning in their claims. From these facts, one must come to Ihe eon elusion that there is not only the fair est show for quartz mining, hut com mon gold washing will sooner or later he found sufficiently productive to in duce the hardy laborer to locale at B. own's Valley. Opsrnv vrtoxi.vr. NO. iO THE KAFFIR WAR I\ SOUTH AFRICA. The prospect of the difficulties be tween the English and the Katfirs and Hottentots being soon settled, is very slight. The accounts by the latest arrival abound in reports of the out rages of the insurgents in stealing cattle, burning buildings and murdering those who fall into their power, iho infection was spreading, and the Cape papers state that prospects look gloomy enough. The power of the Kollirs appears to bo unbroken, and they aro animated by the belief that they shall regain the ascendency in the country. A writer in the South African Ad vertiser stales that two of the rebel chiefs, Stock and Seyolo, had sent a message to Sir Harry Smith, asking for a parley with him, to which Ilia Excellency consented on condition that their guns and weapons wore given up. The writer says that any peace which would result from such patched up negotiations is to be dcplorsd, and that it will not bo acceptable to the mass of tbo people. In regard to the dis persion of the Hottentots and Katlirs at Kat river, by Col. Somerset, the writer says: *• You will read in the papers the termination of the Theopolis affair; a miserable business; in fact, Somerset has done worse than nothing; though ho concentrated a force of near 1000 men. It appears tire rebels have dis patched their women and children, and a few cattle they retained, towards Caffreland, while a body of them re main in the camp, and who. no doubt, will be reinforced by many from Hush Hook, Oliphant's Hoek, and other places ; and that purl of the country will he a nest for all the discontented, and before they can be routed out, many—many lives must be sacrificed. The /lingoes are becoming blood-thirs ty to a degree that is appaling, and it makes one shudder to anticipate what this war will engender in their breasts. We must eventually suffer severely from this race. 1 dread to lie.ar the result of a party of these Fingocs who arc pursuing the fugitive rebels and their wives mid children: as nothing can restrain their blood thirsty disposition, women and children are sure to fall. Oh, bow Ido pray wo could carry on the war without those people. Better, indeed, that the war be ignobly terminated, than con tinue in tutoring the Kingoes to waU low in blood, and obtain their liveli hood by plunder ’* A letter from Bnnghcrsdorp, dated May 19, states that that place was in great danger of being every moment attached by (ho Tamhookies. The neighboring farms had all been desert ed by their owners, who had fled more towards (he colony Jinny farmers had been killed, and a great number of cattle stolen. A letter from the civil commissioner conlinmthe above, and says (hat the boundary was in a most deplorable stale —that the. camps of the farmers had been attacked by hundreds of Kaffirs in open daylight, carrying off the greater part of their sheep ( about 0,000 ) and nearly all their horned cattle; in consequence of which the farmers had all left the frontier. We might add many such para graphs as the above, did our room permit. Affairs are in a deplora able slate, and it is not probable that order will be restored, until a vast amount of treasure arid of life have been sacrificed—[Boston Trav. Don Diego do Salamanca, and his daugh ter, are about to arrive at Tails, to show the effects of this marvellous in vention. rim machine is v ery .sim ple ; it consists of a case two feet long and one foot wide, adapted to n bund round the waist buckled behind. Two iron rods, fastened to the case, support a small piece of wood on which the feet repn-e. The case contains a simple and ingenious mechanism, simi lir to that employed to set an auto maton in motion. The mechanism,is worked by means of a handle. It -els in work two large wings ten feet long, made of very thin caoutchouc covered with feathers; and the wii«f» may be so worked us to produce ver tical. pcrpcndi ular, or horizontal Hy ing. The number of turns given to tic- handle determines the. height to which it is desired to go. The handle is also to be turned every quarter of a league to regulate the distance. The operation o*' turning lasts a minute. Horizontal Hying is the most ditlic.uk : the wings beat the air like the oans of a boat, or rather as the feet of a swan when it swims by means of this curi ous machine, a man can go almost as fast a- a carrier pigeon.
