From the Los Angelos Star. TIIKI LLI.VG INCJDE.VT. California is forming her history of brilliant deeds. She, too, Ims among her hardy pioneers, men of as noble daring as ever (rod the soil of other climes. The energy that is upheaving streams and scaling mountains in pur suit of the glittering ore, when called forth, will stand out in bald relief in the field of chivalry. The following instance of heroic valor characterizes her noble sons, and is unsurpassed by any of the nu merous cases of desperate "and suc cessful encounter, recorded in the an nals of the past. At the time that thousands were at tracted, last spring, to the region of Trinidad Hay, by the reports of rich placers there, a young man by the name of Blackburn, established a fer ry on the Klamath, forty mil s fr ail the Bay. Here lie lived on friendly terras with a large raneherie of Indians near him. But under (ho guise of friendship, these savages were concoc ting a scheme for his destruction ; and at day-break of a morning in June last, they proceeded to its execution. Young Blackburn and his wife were aroused from sleep by the simultane ous shout of nearly an hundred Indi ans, the shrieks of throe ferrymen, in a canvass tent adjoining, who were in stantly cut to pieces, and a battering at the door of the little lint occupied by Liras-If and wife. The yells of the savages were terrific, mad with the slaughter they had just perpetrated. Two rifles and two holster pistols were , in the corner of the room, loaded.— Young Blackburn, seizing one, flew to (lie door, which had been barred, and discharged it. His wife immediately delivered to him the other arms, which he as soon discharged through the door, and she re-loaded them as fast as they could be fired. Although this was her first effort in charging a gun, she made no mistakes. An incessant firing soon drove the savages from the door. He then tore away a clapboard from al! sides of the house to answer as a port hole. For two hours the conflict was kept up with little inter mission, during which time, as the powder was becoming scarce, he open ed the door and flew to the canvass Louse distant some live steps, look thence some powder and a large sized Colt’s revolver, and re-entered the house unharmed, uniujt a shower of arrows—his wife covering the move ment; pistol in hand. The chief, as a last resort, ordered fire, and advanced himself to carry out the design : but he fell dead at the crack of the unerring rifle. wVnothpr attempt to burn the house being attended with like success, the Indians fled, with a loss of fifteen killed and several woun ded. After (he Indians had retreated, young Blackburn and his wife went down to the ferry boat, crossed to the other side of the river, and were soon relieved by tin* timely approach of three well armed Americans, to whom they related their story. Upon being asked by them if his father was safe, Blackburn in astonishment asked “why the question J” The Americans in formed him that his father, who had come up from >San Diego to see him, had the previous evening crossed (lie river at the rancho three miles below, and was on the road to his son’s house. Tins was the first intimation he had received of his father’s intended visit. They re-crossed the river, and taking the road which led from the house down stream, on tbu hill within a hun dred yards of the house, they found (he lifeless body of Blackburn's father his throat cut, and weltering in Ids blood. From that spot the house could not be seen, for the thick under growth intervening. He had been in humanly murdered b} the savages the evening before. In the war which followed, Blackburn had frequent op portunities to avenge his father’s death. He may challenge the world to produce an instance of more cool and determined courage, than that dis played in the foregoing narrative. How truthful are the following sentiments of the eminent French au thor, M. Clmstel: — Self-<made Men. — 1 do not won der that great men have been born mechanics. For those who have been brought up exclusively in drawing rooms, intelligence is a game, a rccre» ation ; for those who have held the sword or the helm, who have diiven the plough or worked with the chisel, intelligence becomes a passion, a force a beauty, a worship, a love divine.— It is from the stall, the shop, the work room, that the most powerful minds have issued ; Molicrc from the uphol ster's, Burns from the farmer’s,Shake speare from the hosier’s shop, lious scan from the wheelwright's. Long engaged in a struggle with physical nature, they all took refuge in tlui free domain of thought. Even an inferior mind would become tempered to strength in these mechanical appren ticeships ; and if ever (lie spirit of re form which is seizing on the world should extend to the act of creating citizens, I doubt not that good sense will gain a victory over custom, and that one of the most important parts of every education will be henceforth the due admixture of the devcloperacnt of the mind and of its action on nature. Comet Endangering run Earth. —Southey, in his “Common Flare Book,” relates that in A. !). 1712, Whiston predicted that the, comet would appear on Wednesday, I4ih October, at five minutes after live a the morning, and that the world woul 1 be destroyed by (ire on the Friday following. 1 Lis reputation was high and the comet appeared. A number of persons got into their boils and barges on the Tham<-.!, thinking the water the safest place. South Sea and India lock fell. A captain of n Dutch ship threw' all his powder into the river, thatlhe ship might not be endangered. At noon, niter the com et had appeared, it is said, that more than one hundred clergyt ica were ter riedover to Lambeth, to request that proper prayers might be prepared, there being none in the church service. People believed that the day of judg ment was at hand, and some acted on this belief, more as if some temporary evil was to bo expected. On Thurs day, more than 7UiK) kept mistresses were publicly married. There was a prodigious run on the bank ; 6'ir Gil bort Ileatheote, at that time heal di rector, issued orders to all the Areolfi ces in London, requiring them to keep a good look out, and have a particular eye upon the Bank of England. NO. 50 The Albany Journal Ims the follow ing sensible remarks on a trite subject Advi'.utisinq.—Aothing is more clearly settled, or more universally admitted, than that the best money spent by a business man is that paid 1 for advertising. The fact has been j demonstrated throughout the world.— Men will pay enough for a hand some sign to embellish their stores, foi elegant windows, and lor oysters drinks, cigars, confectionary, am knick-knacks, to pay n half doze! years’ advertising bills, and all with out any benefit to their business o themselves, to be gained by freely ad vertising. Hundreds ought to be pal where tens arc now, if merchant would thrive and make money. It does not answer to dabble lighvl in the matter. A man may ns w - el expect to wash his hands by dipping) linger in the water, as to give his bit sincss a sensible, clean lilt, by a Hub advertising. The true way, and tb profitable one, is to pay for liberal ad vertising, and then use it. Keep th mill-wheel turning all the time, an people will certainly -end you thei grist after a while. Depend upon i half of the business men who “ bur.' up,” might avoid the painful and dh nstrous event, by resorting to the prin tor’s instead of the shaver’s aid, t hold them up. Half the sum paid fo shaving, and other lollies, would niuk the foolish men w ho j ay for those hi: uries, rich and comfortable. Incomdustidi.k Has. —Uu '1 burs day, says the Newark Daily, Mr. C Dowden of this city made an ex peri ment with an incombustible pas fo putting out fire. He filled a bane open at both ends, to about one ha its capacity, with tar, dry shaving) and other combustible materials, an when ignited, and in a full Haze, few sheets of common wrapping pape saturated with the gaseous preparatio was put under the baric 1 , and th flame was extinguished in a few sec ends, leaving nothing but asmoke pre duced by the gas mixed with a sinnl portion of smoke of the lire. 1 those standing in close proximity i| was found innoxious. 'lhis experi raent was several times repeated will like results. The barrel was then re moved, leaving the combustibles in i heap upon the ground, which tfert fired, and when fully ignited and in i blaze, Mr. 1). applied I lie gaseous pa per, and it was instantly exiinguishcc leaving nothing hut the smoke, refer red to above, 'i he philosophy of th< thing, according to Mr. Dowden, ii this: the gas used is incombustible iind flames cannot exist in it, or ever where there is any considerable jHir (ion of it. Hence he supposes that the eoircci mode of using any incombn-lihle ga.' is to put out the flame of a burning building, and w hen the flame is slop ped, a very small quantity of wutet will reduce the temperature of the cin ders below the burning point. Mr. I), considers this process of extinguish ing (lane a discovery by himself acci dental y rnado. He intends t> make other experiments on the subject.
