BY TELEGRAPH, Expressly for the Joof nal. San Francisco, Feb. 9, 8 o’clock, P. M. The San Francisco wrecked yesterday at the heads; lies in a bad condition, and no hope is entertained of saving any part of vessel or cargo. The Senatorial question has been mad the special order of the day for the Gth of March. A notice has been given of a bill to submit the permanent location o! the State Capital to •the people. Mr. A. A. Sargent has engaged in the litudv of the legal profession in this city. We •wish him success in his new pursuit, to which he is peculiarly fitted. A Deei* Hole. — A correspondent of the Union Democrat gives a description of the -deepest hole” in the diggings, at Weaver ville, Trinity county. The shaft was sunk by a man named Sties, for the purpose of finding the bed rock, and was commenced early in 1851. The work has been prosecuted by means of subscriptions, concerts, Ac. until recently, when a company of five was formed for that purpose. “The shaft is about five feet in diameter, and th«s far a trifle over seven hundred feet deep. At about the depth of one hundred and fifty feet they came to water, wheih troubled them for some time. Finally, they came below the spring, and at the distance of two hundred aud twenty feet came to foul air, where Mr. Hites came near losing his life. This difficulty, how ever, was obviates I by building a small clay furnace upon the top of the ground, and attach ing a horse or ventilator to it, which was low ered to the bottom, when, by keeping a fire burning above in the furnace, the air below became perfectly pure and healthy. This plan has been continued to this time. -The windlass was worked over one year by hand, but now the dirt and rock is raised by horse power. No blasting has been done since the commencement of the work—all having been operated on by the best and sharpest of picks—and in many instances single boulders have been penetrated through 'JO feet in thick ness. The most singular of ail is. that the col or of the gold is to be found through the entire mass of rock and the various strata which have liecn perforated, from the top to the bottom thus far.” The work is progressing slowly, night and dav. The probability Is it must be sunk four or five hundred feet further. fegr- Our merchants trading below would do well to notice the advertisement of Meeker & Co., Sacramento, who offer the most favorable inducements. nrr* Passengers on the steamboats were car ried to Han Francisco from Sacramento, on Monday last fur 50 cents each. The first number will appear on the 23d inst. It is hoped by the projectors that it will he snppoited entirely by California talent. It will contain about sixty pages, and will be published and conducted as nearly as possible after the style of the Knickerbocker. Its plan is sufficiently comprehensive, and its contemplated size sufficiently large, to allow free scope for any department of literature, and it will afford ample space for the free discussion of the most important political and scientific subjects of the day. It will conse quently in that respect possess an advantage over the dai ly papers, whose columns cannot ojten afford room for the proper consideration of many important questions which almost daily come before the public. It will also open a fine field for those who’are desirous of distinguish ing ‘hemselves in Poetry. Belles Letters, and the more flowery uaths of literature, whose contributions will al waes be we'coine. Each number will contain a brief ab stract of the most important decisions of the Courts, a carefully compiled table of the vari uts meterelogicsi changes which may have been observed during the month in the climate, tides and atmosphere of San Francisco, and a summary of the most important events that have taken place during the month, so that while it may be desired ns a source of amusement, it is hoped it will "also possess some value as as a book of reference and be worthy of preservation. Its editorial management will he in the hands of per sons of acknowledged ability and tried experience in the onduct of periodical publications, and no effort will he c pared on the part of the publishers to make it worlhy of Hie noble state in which it lias its origin, and whose litera ture it is expected in a measure to embody, and of the patronage of its subscribers.
