AN ACT to prescribe the l rles of Postage
the Conflderate States of Aimerica, and ft
other p urposes.
The Congress of the Confederate States t
America do enact. That from and after sit
period as the Potstmaster General may 1
proclamation announce, there .shall be charg
the following rates of postage, to wit: 1'
every single sealed it:-ter. and fur every le
ter in inasinscript or paper of any kind, upt
which information shall he asked for or cot
mnunicated in writing or by marks or sign
conveyed in the mail for any di. tance betwet
within the Confederate States of Amerie
not exceeding five hundred miles, five cent:
mad for any distance exceeding five hundri
miles, double that rate ; and every letter <
parcel not exceeding half an ounce in weig
shall be deemed a single letter, and every ai
itional weight of halt an ounce, or addition
weight of its- than half an ouneC, shall I
charged wita additional single postage; at
ill packages conatinting ot-er than printed
written matter-and money packages are i
eluded in this class-shall be rated by weigl

with the law of the Confederate Sates rela
ting to tie carrying of letters or other mail
tnutter,and obliterating postiagestamps, which
oath may be administered by any justice of
the peace, and shall be in writing, and signed
by such agent or messenger, and filed in the
Postoflice Department.
