The nearest Federal force to its i= at Fauls
Church five or six miles beyond us; at this point
there are said to be two Connecticut and two Ohio
Regiments, with eight pieces of artillery, s*e. A
considerable force is undonbtedtly there, but as
far :s particulars are concerned we :re preIty
much in the dark.
I suppose yon have road of the ha'len expt:ri
nuents of the enemy. Yes. they acttaaliy tan (oL
servations of us from a balloon lloating in the
air, and send down telegraphic message. Co the
War Department during their flight ! It is evi
dently part of their religion to be windy ! On
the day after oar arrival here, we saw one of these
balloons distinetly for an hour or mere-suppoeed
it to be at or near Fall's Church. We turned out
en masse and carried all the banners to the toi
of a hill which overlooks the Camp, being deter
mined to let them spy out as much as pnseiI'le.
The famous Professor Lowe is the leading man of
this balloon surveillance; ii we could only lay
hands up 'n hi:n, he would soon exchange his em
pire of the air for a 'lark room.
Betwe:n Manasis Junction ti Fairfax are
said to bo twenty-six thousand t.vops. Thesplen
did Rifle Regiment of C.l. Srrt:cL.. is a n:ilo and
a half to our right: he however belongs to an
other Brigade. C.l. SLOAN is now at Leeshurg
in Lonlon County. Let me not forget to tell you
of the grand alarm we had two nights Winee. This
was occa.sioned by the discharge of a muuket at
midnight in Col. CAst's Camp, followed immedi
ately by the long roll. In five minutes after the
discharge, C,.!. B.tcox was in his saddle, old C.
M. OnAat of Co., A., was heating the longest of
all long rolls, and the "gallant Seventh" had
formed into line of battle, their bayonet5 glisten
iag in the moonlight. Not a man was missiug, and
all wan done promptly, vigoroudly an:l in order.
But Col. Ctan's sentinel had voly been tote rigi
lant, eo the gallant.Seventh put off the spilling 1
of Yanke- Wood yet a little and Slept quietly
until reveille. We have some manner of alarm
every uight :a whole night'- rest is a fable.

Another scene equally interesting and more
characteristie, was the servants crowding round
to bid Col. Hanrros good-bye; and no one ould
doubt that tAcir wishes and prayers for his sue
eess and safe return were as ardent and sincere
t.s those uttered by his family and kindred. Most
aertainly one of Bennett's reporters "ought to
have been there;" and if I thought it would do
any good I should take great pleasure in giving
them it detailed account of the whole scene; but
I tinders'and that writing paper is heeoming an
