Male and Female High School at
Johnston's.
The announcement of this new and
^ very promising Institution, in another
column, claims the attention of the pub
lic generally. The efforts of the citizens
of. Johnston's in this direction, stamp
them as a people of enlightenment, en
ergy and laudable ambition. As for the
teachers, Rev. Luther Broaddus and Miss
Mims-a daughter of our esteemed friend
James H Mims, Esq.-certainly we need
say nothing of them in a region where
they are so well known, so highly hon
ored, so warmly beloved.

The Coming Baptist Association.
We are very glad indeed to see the
great and activo interest manifested
thro?ghbnt our community as regards j
tho Edgefield Association of the Baptist
Church, which is to meet here on the

-with cheerful hearts and nimble fingers
-preparations are being made for the
exercise of that brotherly love and hos

??r* A well-written obituary notice of
Mr. T. J. Ouzts, who died on Otb inst.,
at Abbeville, S. C., has been received,
and will be published in our next issue.
Death of an Edgefield Man in Georgia.
It gives us pain to chronicle the death
of an old and honored friend and former
fellow-citizen-Allen B. Addison, Esq.,
of Americas, Georgia-an eitler 1 ?roth er
of our esteemed townsmen, John L. and
Henry W Addison. Mr. Alien Addison
removed from Edgefield io Southwestern
Georgia before tho war, and at the con
clusion of the war entered into thc mer
cantile business in Amcricus. Ile died
somewhat suddenly on Friday afternoon
last-aged about 45 years.
As Cheap as in Augusta.
In another column, Mr. O. F. Cheatham
oilers Bagging and Arrow Ties at Au
gusta prices. He means literally, to the
very word, what he says.
Our Last Railroad Meeting.
The proceedings of ourRailroad Meet
ing of Tuesday last, will be found in an
other column.
The sailent feature of this meeting was
th? information given by Capt William
Dearing, a young gentleman of Augus
ta who has already made a lasting re
putation as an accomplished civil engi
neer, and as an adept in modern railroad
matters. Capt. Dearing is a son of Dr.
Wm. Dearing, of Augusta, so well known
to many of our people. Having gone
over to Clarendon County, in our behalf
expressly to examine the Manning
wooden railway, Capt. Dearing reported
unfavorably concerning it, and emphat
ically advised us to have done with the
idea of a wooden road, setting forth very
clearly, at the same time, how we might
build a narrow gauge iron road between
our town and the Pine House at a costof
between forty and forty-five thousand
dollars. Or rather a narrow gauge road,
of wooden rails with a top-layer or strip
ping of iron.
Mr. Ashmore's valuable Report was
read and adopted. Mr. Ashmore sim
ply gaveesti mates of the cost of the
three different roads-broad gauge iron,
narrow gauge iron, and narrow gauge
wooden. He recommended neither. We
know, however, that his views concern
ing wooden roads coincide with those of
Capt. Dearing.
Tho Committee of Fifteen are request

Repetition of the Dramatic Entertain

The Entertainment of the Methodist
ladies came oft' on Tuesday evening,
despite tho rain. The whole day had
been extremely inclement, the rain pour

Consequently the audience was not large.
As regards tho performance, it was a
perfect success-lively, intelligent, bril

now announce that it will be repeated,

For the Advertiser.'
Exhibition of the Ninety-Six Academy.
Thinking it might be of interest to
you readers to know the signs of the times
in other sections of the country, I re
spectfully ask a space in your columns
to note a few of the important events that
transpired a few days since in one of your
sister villages-Ninety-Six. It is true
Abbeville is distinguished for its mania
for railroads, newspapers, and other im- 1
provenie?ts, yet she'is by no means-in
different to the great cause of education,
and the proper means of its promotion,
but is ever ready to ofter words of en
couragement and to lend a helping hand
in the educational training of the country.
It was our pleasure on the 7th inst., to
witness the manifestation of this spirit
in theExhibition of the Ninety Six Acad
emy, which is under the supervision of
Prof. J. R. Blake, who, by-the-way, is a
graduate of ^Erskine College. Such de
monstrations of intellectual improve
ment are seldom seen, and we could
scarcely realize the fact, that so flourish
ing an institution had sprung into exist
ence in the short timo of six months, un
til we witnessed the throng of visitors
and heard the exercises of the occasion.
At an early hour the hall was filled
with eager spectators, and surrounded
outside with as many more. The exer
cises were opened with prayer by Rev.
J. C. Alexander, of N. C., ' after which,
followed the able address of Prof. Hood,
on the "Growth, Motions and Circula
tions of Nature." He carried us through
the sciences of Chemistry, Geology, Phy
siology, Zoology, ftc., and the whole pro
duction was evidently the effort of a mas
terly ndnd. I would like to give a sy
nopsis of tho whole, though time will only
allow me to say that those present were
not disappointed, and those absent miss
ed a treat. After this followed the decla
mations of the boys, both original and
extracts, rehearsals of the little girls, and
the essays of the young ladies, all Of
which reflected much credit upon both
teacher and pupil.
After an interval ' of .me boor, given
for recreation and refreshments, the au
dience re-assembled, and were highly
entertained until 5 o'clock. The exer
cises were interspersed with excellent
music by Prof. Schmitt and daughter,
assisted by Messrs. Fowler, Branch and
Trowbridge, of Abbeville, and Messrs.
Bradley, Wideman and Pressley, from
Long Cane, who added much to the en
joyment of thc occasion.
At night a Concert was -also given by ;
thc school, consisting of charades, tab
leaux, dbe. We never witnessed better
performances from scholars, and they
would have rellectcd credit upon regular :
theatrical actors.
As expressive of the great success of
thc whole exercise we would extracta
complimentary notice from the Abbe
ville Press dc Banner, which is as follows.
NIKI;TY-SIY, S. C., Aug. 7, 287?.
