Many There Are
That Live in A
THERE is nothing more terrible
in the Bible, or out of it, than
our Lord's repeated warnings
that many persons will meet
with an awful disappointment
after this life is over. They will find
that they have been living in a false
security, because they did not seek to
know and do what God required of
them, but only to follow out their own
ideas as to what ls right and proper.
There are lots of well-meaning, and in
many ways well-doing, persons in the
world today who have never acknowl
edged even to themselves the sinful
ness of their own hearts and their
need of Christ as a Saviour from sin,
and who reject either with indiffer
ence or with disdain the atonement
for sin which was provided at the cost
of so awful a sacrifice on God's part.
What right have such persons to ex
pect favor or forgiveness from God
after they have deliberately refused to
avail themselves of his offer of mercy
an and through Christ?
"Ye must be born again," Jesus
said. "That which ls born of the flesh
ls flesh, and that which is born of the
Spirit is spirit"

plainly and in very many different
form of expression that ms^ can
not be Baved by his own goodness, but
only through the atonement for sin
made by God himself in the person of
his son, and that therefore all true
righteousness begins with faith in
CiVrist; that is with the acceptance by
us of .<?Ous offer of mercy through
Loving anu Serving.
True faith in Christ will Impel us to
love him, and true love for Christ will
impel us to serve him. Faith that
does not lead to loving service is
therefore not true faith. As James
says, that sort of faith "is dead in
itself." But good works that are not
born of faith and love and obedience
are not good at all in God's sight
"This is the work of God," Jesus said,
"that ye believe on him whom he hath
Bent" In other words, submission to
the will of God by acceptance of God's
terms and receiving pardon as a free
gift in Christ's name ls the beginning
of a right relation between the sinner
and God. And no man can please God
until he has placed himself In a right
attitude toward God.
Many will say to me In that day,
""Lord, Lord, ded we not prophesy by
thy name, and by thy name cast out
devils, and by thy name do many
mighty works? And then will I pro
fess unto them, I never knew you: -
depart from me, ye that work inquity."
Over and again, Jesus repeated the
.warning that many who thought while
.on earth that they were living right
and even doing special work for bim
will be grievously disappointed in the

we 6?.ch made our peace with God in
Christ, and accepted Christ as our
Saviour from sin itself as well as
from the condemnation due to us for
sin? Or, are we preparing for our
selves the disappointment of finding
when lt is too late that we have been
trusting in a false idea. 1

His Sinless Nature and
THERE is a prevalent miscon
ception concerning the dally
life and experiences of the
Lord Jesus when he was with
us. We think of him as the
'Man of Borrows," and rightly. "He
sarrled his sorrows;" the burden of
Dur guilt was upon him. He was so In
?ympathy with men that their burdens
and sorrows became his. The incom
pleteness of character, the hypocrisy
and deceit which met him everywhere,
the thousand forms of iniquity which
filled the world, our guilt laid upon
bis soul, did Indeed fill him with sor
row; there was no sorrow like his.
It was a deep undercurrent that be
came greater as he approached the
end. Even when all would seem to be
far removed from this, when the mul
titudes were about him seeking his
blessing, we hear him say: "My soul
is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto
But with all this his heart was full
of Joy. There was sorrow, but there
was no sadness; there was a burden,
but there was no disappointment;
there was the keen sense of the guilt
of sin and of the agony of the atone
ment, but there was no hesitation.
We see the tumult, but he speaks of
"my peace," his own peculiar
peace; we see the suffering, but
his highest wish for his disciples
was that "my Joy might remain in
you, and that your Joy might bs
Life's Suffering and Happiness.
Suffering and happiness are not
incompatible j sorrow and Joy are not
so antagonistic that they may
not dwell In the sanie heart. There
ls a grace which rises above the sui'
faring, and makes it minister to Joy.
It is one of the wonderful things o?
grace that it so lifts us up out of our
surroundings and out of ourselves,
that there ia perfect peace even when
the suffering is greatest. We have
seen the victim of disease racked
with pain whose face beamed with
joy, and whose words were songs of
praise. The martyrs sang as they
burned. So with Jesus; at the very
time when his cup was Ulled to the
overflowing, he talked with biaj
disciples out of a heart perfectly at

sinless nature. We cannot measure
that, but we may sometimes have a
foretaste of it; there may be such s

Jesus. To him there was the Joy o?
infinite love. He gave himself for
others, and In their salvation his Joy
was above all suffering. The prayer
of the penitent thief was to him the
Joy of love prevailing, even over the
thorns and the nall?. There to him
was the consciousness of his Father's
love and support. He dwelt on that
love. Even with the cross before
him, in the commmunion of the holy
fellowship his very garments shone
with the glory of God. He was
mocked and scorned, but all the
time he, saw his work prevail
All Typical of His Love.
The lame man walking, the dumb
man Binging the praise of God, the
dead man coming back to life, were
typical of a greater work of love in
the salvation of men. He thought ol
the man whose sins were forgiv
en as one savjd, and not simply
healed. The world redeemed was
not present to him. How great the
Joy of that hour as he prayed, "Holy
Father, keep those whom thou hast
given me!" We can know but little
of that higher world In which Jesus
lived, for it 1B the world of perfect
holiness and Infinite love, but we
see something of lt; we have some
thing in common with him, so that
we can enter into his Joy sufficlently
to know that lt crowned all labor
and- sweetened all sorrow. The
"Man of sorrows let him ever be
us, but also we should open our
heans to receive the Inflowing of his
ever-present, unbounded Joy.-United
Joy of the Lord.
Sorrow for sin ls the road to the
Joy of salvation. As with the people
of Israel of old, the terrors of the law
are only the reverse side of the glory
of the gospel; the warnings are only
shadows of the promises. So Ezra
spoke words of consolation to the
weeping people assembled to heat
from his Hps God's message to them.
"This day ls holy unto Jehovah your
God; mourn not nor weep, for the
Joy of Jehovah ls your strength."
The Joy that gives strength ,1s a
divine joy, lt ls called "the joy of J?
hovah." For pain and rapture meet
in the Ufo of God. Ho, too, feels an*
guish for the broken law as he sees tl
In the broken lives of his children,
and he, beering the burden of the
world's agony in atoning love,
touches the blessedness of divinest
joy through sacrificial service, wheo
he sees of the travail of his soul and
ls satisfied. When wv learn to share
his heartbreak over a lost world and
lost souls we shall have also entered
into the joy of oar Lord.

who have been working to get up a
petition which would enable them
to call a dispensary election for that
county according to the Advertiser,

We see that Dr. M. D. Jeffres
pastor of the Edgefield Baptist
church has come in for some heavy
abuse because he did his duty in op
posing the effort to re-establish the
dispensary. This is not at all to be
wondered at, and was no surprise
to Dr. Jeffries. It is a compliment
to him or any other man to have
the liquor element arrayed against
