-A Michigan woman has recovered by
law all the money that her husband had
sapent in a liquor saloon for six years. The
prohibitory law of that State does not
regard liquor as "property," and the
woman recovered the money on the
ground that it bad been paid to the li
quor' vender without consideration. Al'
ter this -verdict gets to be well under
stood throughont the State very few
men will be found courageo:us enough to
undertake the retail liquor traffic within
its limits.
FUnES-The fires, involving a loss of
over $20O,000 each, that occurred in Feb
ruary, 1870, throughout the United;
States, caused a destruction of property
amounting in the aggregate to $2,813,
580, an increase of $170,856 ovecr Feb
ruary, 1869. The largest occurred in Phila
delphia, February 17tb, Bruner's cotton
nalls ; loss $400,000.
Not only are memorials coming in for
the abolition of the income tax, but
State Legislatures aire asking the same.
A few day-s ago the joint resolution of
the Legislat ure of California to that effect
was laid before the proper committee.
A Wisconsin farmer sues for a divorce
on the ground that his wife can't chop
the amount of wood that she boasted
about previous to marriage..
