The Crops.
The weather has not been as favorable as
we could desire, during tho past week: but on
summing up the results of the crop of this year
wo have no reason to modify our previous re

A friend in this town has a small tract of
'^pct cotton"; and he has counted as many as
seventy bolls and blooms on one stalk, while
forty or fifty is the average number. Can the
country beat the town'!.
TIic Registrars for this District
Wo think that everybody will agree with us,
that the appointments for this District are emi
nently judicious ; and we trust that every one
<?f those named, who can take the oath, will
sorve. Ry so doing, there will be no opportu
nity fur further appointments, which may be
made from nmohg those who arc very objec
tionable to the well-disposed in the community.
Wc feel that wc are uttering the general opin
ion of the District, when we say that -every
man is expected to do his duty."

music, with 450 musiciaus.
In clearing out a reservoir at St. Louis used
for supplying the city with water, the bodies
of thirty-three children wero found.
It is reported that cholera has appeared at
Greenwood, Miss:, on tho Yazoo River. Over
thirty negroes have died, but no eases yet a
moug the whites.
Ex-Senntor B. II. Hall delivered a speech
at Atlanta, recently. He takes decided grounds
against reconstruction under the military bill,
and advises the people to reject the terms.
Ex-Gov. Johnson has written a letter advi
sing the people of Georgia not to accept the
terms of the military reconstruction acts, and
sa3's: "1 hope every man in Georgia who can
register will do so, with a view of defeating
the scheme of our degradation."
Twenty thousand Swiss women earn a com
fortable living by watchmaking. They make
the movements, and mostly put them together.
A few women are finishers. The I-Jtiyllsh Wo
?ian'? Jtcvictc says : "Geneva has refused to
employ women, and totally lost the watch trade.
None of the so-called Geneva watches are made
there, but in Neufehatol, where women Irave
always been employed."
Among the papers captured at Qucretaro, it
has been ascertained, was a letter from Mira
nion to Maximilian, protesting against the ap
pointment of Marque/, to a military rank high
er than his own. Marques: was, however, ap
pointed to such a rank, and this rivalry between
himself and Miramon, taken in connection with
other matters, leads to the belief that Marquez
really was not loyal to Maxiniili ;n.
A shocking tragedy occurred near Union
City, Odin county, Ky., on Monday. A negro
man broke jail in that town on the proceeding
Friday, repairing to the house of an aged ami
highly respected widow lady, named Charani,
outraged her, and then fled. Two sons of the
injured woman followed the wretch to Hick
man, Ky., arrested him. and, taking him hack
to near the scene of the outrage, sind him dead,
and then severed his head from his body.
A marriage recently took place, in Fayctte
villo, N. C. of a white man. named Thornton
to a negro woman. Previous to tho perfor
mance of the ceremony, application was made
to General Sickles for an order legalizing the
same. The General accorded the requisite
permission and authority for the m rriage tn
take place, hut.il was accompanied with an ex
press disapprobation of such an unusual pro
ceeding.
Information,d'roin Florida states, says the
Washington correspondent id' the New York
Tiinc*i that the date Republican Union Con
vention held at Tallahassee was a decided suc
cess, and that the platform adopted embraced
a most unequivocal endorsement of the recon
struction policy of Congress. When the Con
vention was lir.-t organized considerable section
al joakmsy was evinced between the delegates
from Eastern and Middle Florida, but before
the adjournment all differences were healed
and the greatest unanimity of feeling prevailed.
A watchmaker of Washington. 1). C. has
just completed a line chronometer watch, in

Ur,iutilul niece of workmanship. It is a liunt

thick and heavy. On the inside of the lid is
tho following inscription: "To his Majesty
the Tycoon of Japan, from the President of
tho United States, 18C7." The works are of J
tho finest kind, and tho watch is jewelled
throughout. The style of chain has not yet
been selected.
Sukhatt's Fate;?A Piece or Spite.?
Forney's Chronicle has let off the following
spiteful paragraph: '-One of our evening co
temporaries is nervous about the fntcofSur
ratt. There noed be no alarm on his account.
Nobody expects him to be found guilty in this
city, under the present arrangements for selec
ting a jury. We have no doubt Washington
is eminently loyal. Hut the 'Lost Cause' has
enough friends horo to secure at least one
member of any jury that may be ompanncllcd
to try Surratt. That one member is as good
as a dozen, so far as defeating a verdict of
?guilty' is concerned. Neither Surratt nor
anybody else is ever likely to be punished in
this city for aiding the rebellion, whether as an
assassin of the nation's President or as a Con
federate spy and blockade-runner. Surratt is
more likely to get a clerkship in one of the
Departments in a few weeks than he is to be
hanged for his crime.
