At that moment the flames had enveloped his chest and were raging in between the arms. Fortunately the child had not taken off bis heavy overcoat and this fact, no doubt, saved bim a very serious burning. As it was, his injuries are slight and he is now all right. HOODTUWN HAPPENINGS. Considerable Terracing; Done?Progress of Farm Work?Raid of Smoke House Thief. Correspondence of the Yorkville Enquirer. Hoodtown, April 5.?The somewhat backward spring has afforded an excellent opportunity for the farmers to get a great deal done in the way of terracing lands, cleaning up hedgerows, and other work too much neglected when seasons are favorable for plowing. However, farm work is considerably in advance of this season last year. With fair weather some cotton will be planted next week. Some com has been plauted already. Wheat is lookiug quite promising. There seems to be a probability of a fair peach crop if not damaged worse later on, though this morning's freeze ( and frost has likely summarily dealt with a portion of it. Mr. E. A. Feemster has been quite sick with fever for the last three weeks. He now bids fair to be up again soon. Mrs. Pink Dowdle, wife of Mr. Sam B. Dowdle, of Lockbart, and formerly of this neighborhood, died last Tues- | day night after quite a long illness. She will be buried today at Bullock's Creek cemetery. A husband and a 1 number of childreu?one an infant of ] a few months?survive her. The sore- ( ly bereaved family have the sympathy i of a number of friends and relatives. Mrs. Dowdle was a daughter of the late Andrew E. Black, aud was aged about 40 years. Some party or parties entered the smoke house of Mr. Joseph Feemster, of the Bullock's Creek neighborhood, a few nights ago and carried off six hams and one middling, comprising nearly all of his meat. He has not yet gotten any clue to the thief. Voce. FOR CARRYING THE MAILS. Railroads Get 840 a Ton Against 80 Cents for Other Freight. While speaking on the Loud bill the other day, Hon. J. William Stokes called attention to some interesting facts which ought to be otherwise. Among other things he said : The railroads of the country are drawing from the treasury of the Uuited States for carryiug mails something like $38,000,000 a year in the aggregate. This means that the government is paying at the rate of $40 per ton per 100 miles for tranportation of . its mails. Do they earn it? Certainly not, when we compare this rate to the rates which the same railroads charge for other classes of transpurta tiOD. I The most carefully compiled statis- ' tics demonstrate that these same rail- . roads are carrying passengers at the | rate of $20 per ton for the same unit of distance. These same railroads charge the express companies only $4 per ton. This, in turn, means 6.58 cents per pound for mail, while the charge for express is only 6 mills per pound. This is a bad enough showing by comparison, surely. But this is not all, Mr. Speaker. Besides all this, not content with drawing twice as much for trauportation of muil as they do for passenger tranportation and ten times as much as they charge for express tranportatiou, they draw $6,250 a year reutal for postal cars, which cost to build not exceeding $4,000 apiece at the outside, and some not more than $2,500. It seems incredible, Mr. Speaker, but that is the frozen truth. AT THE CHURCHES. TRINITY" METHODIST EPISCOPAL. rev. j. m. steadman, pastor. Sunday Services.?Morning service 1 at 11 o'clock.
