FIRST A. R. PRESBYTERY. Spring Meeting Now In Session In Chester. Chester. May 7.?There is a very full attendance, about sixty members, on the spring meeting of the First Associate Reformed Presbytery, which convened here last night. After interesting devotional exercises, including an able sermon by Rev. J. Meek White, retiring moderator. presbytery was called to order by that official and duly constituted with prayer, after which Rev. R. A. Lummis, moderator-elect, assumed dlrec^ tion of proceedings. Last night was devoted to the consideration of so much of the minutes of the previous meeting as seemed to come under the head of unfinished business, and the session lasted until about half-past ten o'clock, with the result that a good deal of work, most ly of a routine character, was disposed of. The committee charged with the development of the Gilfillan home proposition, reported but little progress. The committee had decided that It would not be wise to enter upon the proposed undertaking with less than <5,000, and as the result of in< qulries and overtures for additional help. It had been very much discouraged, having raised less than $200. On motion the report of the committee was recommitted. Today is to be devoted largely to hearing the trial sermons of the following theological students, lately re* ceived under the care of presbytery: William A. McCauley, W. H. Stevenson, W. C. Kerr, J. B. Pearson, R. L. Patrick. Messrs. R. W. Carson and W. A. Kennedy are to preach for licensure. The work of the session will likely be concluded tonight. The Chester Seceders are doing their best to make it pleasant for the visitors and that they are succeeding goes without saying. McCONNELLSVILLE NOTES. OniTMpondenc* of the Yorkville kuqulrer McCoNNKixavrLLE, May 6.?The spring meeting at Olivet closed last Sunday night. Rev. J. A. McMurray of Sharon, did the preaching. His sermons were able and much enjoyed. Mr. S. A. Lindsay of Columbia, is here on a visit to his mother. Miss Lottie Dunlap of Delphos, spent Saturday and Sunday with Miss Mary Harshaw. m Miss Julia Foster has been spending a few days with Misses Sallie and Mattie McConnell. Mrs. Browning and Miss Mabel Lilly of Filbert, visited here last week. Mrs R A. Foard returned home Saturday afternooi\ from an extended visit to relatives In Columbia, Wedgefield and Chester. Miss Lottie McCants of Charlotte is spending the week with her father. ^ Miss Mozelle Inman of Yorkville, is visiting relatives here. Master James Ashe is confined to his bed from the effects of a fall from a barn loft. Dr. Eleanor Saunders, spent a few days last week with her parents here, before taking up her work at the state V hospital for the insane at Columbia. ? A Columbia special of May 3 to News and Courier: An impromptu investigation into the manner in which whisky was purchased for the state dispensary was held in Attorney General Lyon's office this afternoon. During the afternoon Mr. C. W. Dudley, who has represented several whisky firms in this territory, was In Mr. Lyon's office and in conversation made * some statements which proved of interest to the attorney general. Mr. Lyon began some questioning. Dudley having promised to make an affidavit covering certain points, but when the questions became rather pointed. Dud~ ley broke off the talk. Mr. Lyon sumjfc moned such members of the dispensary commission as had not left the city and sent Detective Broom, of the city police force, after Dudley, who was brought before the commission and the attorney general. A stenographer took notes of the proceedings. It was developed that at one time several months ago Dudley had on deposit in the Palmetto bank in this city as much as 57,000 to his credit, which, he said, represented his commissions on business. This amount was checked out by checks made payable to "cash" in different amounts, the * * * * 1 ? ?ab?aoo1a?i nf tKo cneCKS Deins now m (juotjmuh ui v..v. attorney generaL- Mr. Dudley admitted that although he was in larger cities for a greater length of time than he spent In Columbia he did not have bank accounts in other cities except f at his home town. In regard to the purchase of whisky from Clark & Lehman, the Peoria firms, which he represented, he said that some of the liquor bought by the last board of directors was purchased here and some in .Peoria by Mr. John Black, the prices varying from $1.60, $1.60 to $1.75. He said that he had attended meetings of the board and discussed the purchases with the directors and solicited their business, and that no bids were filed or samples submitted, as required by law. The examination of Mr. Dudley developed many points of interest, which the attorney general may find useful In the future. The examination was open to the public, though impromptu and unexpected, * and newspaper men were admitted. AT THE CHURCHES. BAPTIST. Prayer meeting Wednesday evening at 8.00. Previous to the year 1905, the expression was common that "all life Insurance companies are about the same." It was used alike by laymen and agents of practically every company except the Mutual Benefit. The laymen believed It to be true because the agents had told them so. The agents knew It was not, but In order to keep the people fooled they must, when they came In competition with the Mutual Benefit, make the assertion in order to keep the prospect from looking before he leaped. Since the Armstrong Committee lifted the lid in New York in 1905 the laymen have learned that "all life companies are not about the same" and that the Mutual Benefit is the only one that could and did stand every test that could be applied, and prove by its record that It was In a class by itself and did and had always given each and every member a square deal under all circumstances. No better proof of these assertions, It seems, could be offered than the fact that In 1906 Its agents wrote more business than during any year of the 62 It had been In business, while almost all of the "just about the same" companies wrote from 10 to 75 per cent. less.
