LONG STAPLE COTTON How Marlboro Farmers are Tackling Their Problem. Farmers who have staple cotton to dispose of this season cannot be too particular with the seed and with the handling of the cotton itself for the market. Keeping the seed separate for next year's crop is a vital necessity for the continued propagation of the staple cotton. Patience and care in the handling of staple cotton will be suitably rewarded. When in the city recently Mr. John L. McLaurin of Bennettsville, describ' ed the manner in which the farmers of Marlboro are looking after their interests. They have organized a county i association for the purpose of handllna staple cotton. The farmers who | intended to engage in the planting realized that there would be great . benefits if the proposition were handled right and great disappointments if handled improperly. Therefore they organized a club of 100 farmers, each of whom put 150 into the organization. This organization capital, they feel, will be but a small percentage on the increased profit which they expect to realize. With this capitalization in hand, they were enabled to employ an expert grader. He was brought down I from a Boston factor's office where he had had a great deal of experience in grading and selecting staple cotton, and the farmers planted the seed which he recommended. He has spent the intervening months getting ready for the ginning and marketing. He has made connections with mills in k Manchester, England, and with other manufacturers and these will keep him informed daily of the price of the staple on these markets. He will thus be enabled to sell the cotton direct for the farmers and will get them the very best prevailing prices. When the '? * nlnlrMt Ha will Set 8am WilUIl go uio? ..... pies and grade them and catalogue them and report to the prospective purchasers exactly how many bales of each kind and grade and tensile strength he has on hand. It seems to us that there is in this ample food for suggestion to the farmers in Anderson county who are producing staple cotton this year. It a too late to organize such a corporation here, but there are expert graders in the state who might be brought here periodically to give assistance in grading the cotton. Mr. Coker of Hartsville. is one. and Mr. J. Sumter Moore of Columbia, is another. Mr. Coker is a man of a multitude of large Interests and he might not be induced to come here for a commission. but he might do it for nothing, in the interest of his fellow farmers. We believe that the local buyers understand the matter very well, but as some farmers last year were disappointed because all of their staple cotton did not bring a uniform price, we think it would be a good idea for them by this means of Inquiry to learn that there Is difference in staple cotton just as there is between staple and snort nbre.?Anderson Daily Mail. ^ CHILDREN'S DAY AT HOPEWELL Interesting Programme Carried Out at i the School House.
